The problem with these outrageous fashion things is that eventually you get totally sick of having to deal with strangers looking at you. At some point you realize you just want to go about your own business without being noticed all the time.

I have some experience with this; sort of tried it all as a youth (hippie, punk, rivet head). It's useful for identifying yourself to other like-minded people, but I definitely got sick of the attention and realized it was better to do interesting things than have interesting hair.
