This also works if you just focus your eyes on the outer portions of the image.

It appears that the central portion is actually moving more slowly, and since the perspective/movement draws your focus to the center of the image, the entire image appears to be moving slowly.

Blocking the center with your hand removes this slower moving portion, allowing your eyes to naturally focus on the remaining visible portion, which is moving more quickly than the middle, giving the illusion that the whole image is now moving faster.

Very cool trick!

The points along the outside of the image appear to be moving faster than the points in the center regardless of whether or not you obstruct your view of the points in the center.

This is due to the image attempting to emulate a 3-Dimensional perspective, but still being constrained to a 2-Dimensional plane. In order to achieve this effect the points furthest from center must translate at a faster rate across the 2-Dimensional plane than the points closest to center.

Neat trick.

I've always assumed this concept to be the same reason it feels like you're driving faster at night when it's dark, even though you're really not driving faster than you normally would during the day.

You perceive how fast you're going relative to your surroundings. During the day this is a combination of objects farther from you (especially out ahead of you), which appear to move slowly, as well as objects that are closer, and seem to whiz by. However, at night, you usually can't see things very far from you, only the things that are very close, so, as with this picture, it appears you're moving faster than you are.

For a better effect, slide an opaque sheet of paper up from the bottom, gradually covering up the whole image and they'll accelerate and decelerate when you bring the paper back down.

Also, though it might seem like the bigger you make the image the bigger the effect will be, I found that it works best at the size it originally is shown in (~4x3 inches).

It's because your eyes are seeing the origin point of where the moving objects come from and go. So, instinctivly you follow the dots from center to out of the screen. But with the first in the way... the travel distance becomes shorter as it's from the fist to the outside of the screen thus becoming faster.

Your fist and monitor need to be the right size so you block out enough of the center to really see it. If you don't see the effect right away, simply pull your fist back towards your eyes so it occupies more of the picture until you only see the edges.
