I thought the entire point of the war was that the Allies had discovered colour and the Nazi's wanted to keep things black and white. Although post war many of the Allied nations weren't that keen on black for a while.

[–]CopiousLoads 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is a common misconception. The Nazis wanted the world colorized to facilitate visual identification of non-Aryans . The Allies , worried about the destabilizing effect colorization would have on their social structures, hurriedly worked to beat the Germans .The main goal of the war was controlled coloration of the world on a time scale that was manageable .

[–]brianfit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, but you forget of course the economic interests of IG Farben, which was doing the most advanced research into dye manufacture and creation of new colours unseen before seen on Earth. As noted in Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow:

"The big scandal around IG Farben this week is the unlucky subsidiary Spottbilligfilm AG, whose entire management are about to be purged for sending to OKW weapons procurement a design proposal for a new airborne ray which could turn whole populations, inside a ten-kilometer radius, stone blind. An IG review board caught the scheme in time. Poor Spottbilligfilm. It had slipped their collective mind what such a weapon would do to the dye market after the next war."

Are you implying that there wasn't art prior to the 1950s? Or happiness?

Just because the commercials of the time and other things were... well, bleak, doesn't mean they're an accurate portrayal of the time. Commercials and movies of today are much the same, they just portray a different ideal.

The 20s seemed pretty happy. Lots of sex, new found liberalism, music, art.

The 30s had the depression, but from what I've heard people sticked together. Art flourished.

The 40s had the war, but the post-war period was full of swing and an all around good time.

The 50s seemed pretty fucking miserable, though.

[–]NeoSniper 0 points1 point ago

I'm thinking that was a movie reference. I know Equilibrium carries this idea loosely, but I also know there was a another movie where the plot was exactly about this; people bringing color back to a black and white town through happiness and joy.

I asked my teacher in 2nd grade if back when the dinosaurs were alive did the world have color. She said no then yes then said that she honestly doesn't know. I guess she took it to a philosophical level. "If the world was black and white and no one was around to see it, is it still in black and white?"

So really interesting actually, I was reading a thing that people who lived from the 1950's through the 60's actually dreamed in black and white much of the time because of the introduction of the BW TV. This changed back to color with the color TV.

I read this somewhere... now I have to go refind that article because it tripped my mind a little bit.

Instead of "ghosts" being the victorious military figures parading past a conquered nation's capitol, the "ghosts" of an older city should be its innocent civilians slaughtered.

German cities were firebombed by the allies. One of the most famous was Dresden in which enormous casualties were taken and lots of historical buildings and art were destroyed. It may have been specifically targeted because of its historical significance; a symbolic attack on an important arts and culture center.

My grandmother remembers seeing people burning to death after phosphorous bombs went off in her city in Germany, when she was just a little kid. That stuff burns right into your flesh and cannot be extinguished. She drinks a lot now.

Are you serious? This has nothing to do with the very cool picture that OP posted. I know that's Dresden, and I'm guessing you're one of those creepy Germanophiles who never misses an opportunity to stick up for the "untold" story of the Germans' perspective on the war. News flash: the Germans BOMBED THE SHIT out of London (you can still find shrapnel) and the rest of England and the rest of Europe, for that matter. If only that were the worst of it.

TL;DR: Shut the fuck up.

It certainly isn't equivalent to the Nazi war crimes, but it certainly qualifies as an atrocity. The city of Dresden held no vital war function of the Germans, its destruction was purely to destroy German morale, by incinerating innocents...

What am I looking at here? dead bodies?

[–]KCAugg 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're covered in dust and partially mummified. Fire bombs' uncontrollability and intense heat becomes dissipated into the air, producing not only vortexes that literally suck people into them due to pressure changes, but also penetrating heat waves that extend far beyond the fire's immediately reach. It didn't matter that they were never directly in contact with fire, because superheated air would still kill them nonetheless—similar to being trapped in an oven. Bodily fluids would boil away, leaving the corpses with telltale signs of desiccated and deformed bodies with shriveled skin, but rarely exterior evidence of serious burns or charrings—as seen above. This is because people weren't burned to death insomuch as they were boiled alive from the inside out.

I think it's safe to say it wouldn't be a pleasant way to go out.

No man that's not true! The Germans were Evil and the Allies were Good and that's the 100% back and white truth of the matter! Firebombing of Dresden, pfft - they were Nazis, man.

Oh, and this was also misrepresented as bad, but it was just Good Allied Bombers taking out Evil German Nazis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Hamburg_in_World_War_II

The Allies, being Good and Righteous, would never bomb civilians, and certainly not huge residential neighbourhoods:

To the guy buried alive in his flaming house there's probably no difference. To the woman clutching the bloody dead wreck of her child in her arms there's probably no difference.

How do you scale these things? How does several million differ from a hundred thousand when you are one of those people? Both are a lot of people.

You can't just throw numbers around like an accountant when discussing death and devastation. If you're one of those people in Iraq it's horrible, full stop.

Germany and it's allies killed about 40 million civillians during WW2. The US only intervened indirectly pre 9/11 except during Desert Storm. (At least as far as I know.) Even if you count all the crimes of Saddam and the Shah (which is not really fair) you will only end up at about one or two million. Therefore the analogy is unscaled.

[–]zzorga 2 points3 points ago

The Germans sure all wanted this back then. It's completely impossible that, like today in politics, two thirds of the population is under- or misinformed, and half of the ones that do know what's going on are against it but powerless. No, in contrast to Americans today who clearly have very diverse opinions and goals, Germans in 1940 all had synchronized minds and wanted the exact same thing as Hitler and friends.

Untold: "of an incalculable amount". Really? And these recent American wars are "probably" not as bad as Auschwitz? Really? Auschwitz was 1.1 million people deliberately murdered for no other reason than that their existence was offensive.

I don't have a problem with people pointing out Allied war crimes, or for that matter with pointing out American war crimes now. The subject is worth discussing.

Please have some perspective though, and realize that when you make these comparisons for effect, that there are consequences that go beyond what you probably intend. If every war criminal is comparable to Hitler, that diminishes that man's crimes. And if every slaughter is comparable to Auschwitz, this diminishes the horror of Auschwitz.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

It's pretty hard to put a positive spin on a hundred thousand plus deaths caused by an occupation based on lies by greedy industrialists - that's all I mean. Comparing it to the systematic death machine that was the Nazi extermination plan might minimize it by juxtaposition, and I don't think that kind of minimization is fair to the Iraqis who've suffered and died. So that's why I chose the wording I did; not to diminish Auschwitz but to be certain that the juxtaposition didn't diminish the Iraqi and US soldier deaths in the Iraq occupation.

This is a style of photography called Rephotography. It involves taking an older photo and finding the exact location and vantage point from which the photo was taken. The photographer then takes the photo again from the exact same vantage point and then layers the older photo on top (or bottom if they so choose) and paint away the top layer.

In Barcelona, the group Arqueologia Del Punt De Vista (http://www.arqueologiadelpuntdevista.org/) has used this technique to create massive installations about the Spanish Civil War and how it affected the city of Barcelona. Their website is full of examples of how they have utilized Rephotography.

For more on the topic, check out http://www.ratchetup.com/roadtrip2011/ for a blog post on it as well as other photography related things.

This is a really cool technique. It offers so much to the viewer and I am struck especially by the notion of ALL THOSE LIVES. As in, all the lives of all the people who have lived before now, before me. They were all here. They were born and grew (I love the toddlers walking on the street-- what lives did they lead?) and learned and thought. Probably all are dead by now or soon to be. And every one of them lived a life centered on the "I" and saw the world from their one perspective-- limited through no fault of their own, that's just how it is. And then they died. Seriously, can we just try to comprehend how insignificant we are? Not just in the cosmos at large (billions and billions of stars) but even in the pageant of human history... I'm just one little human and so were each of them. We are here so briefly. Each of us is one of BILLIONS of humans to live right now and to ever have lived. This should humble us. This should inform us. Sometimes it cripples us. So, then, how will you live your life?

I like these quite a bit if they are as authentic as they look. Some of them it seems pretty clear that the backgrounds juxtapose, but I'm not as sure about the others.

Wow, this image overlay was fantastic. Anyone have the sources? It could really go with a better mixing, including a fade on the right that doesn't cut out the modern day people, and a colour faded match between old and new as well.

I love the perspective that this sort of thing gives on history; It gives me a sense of the fleeting, but all too real, importance of the mundane in the chaotic enterprise of war, and the ad-hoc nature of combat. This sense of life being infused with history is something that I wish we had more of in America. Aside from the east coast and some iconic places like the Alamo, we really don't get this very much. In Europe, though, it seems like I could walk down almost any city street and here would be a candy store that was briefly the 177th panzergrenadiers battalion HQ, or a covered bus stop that 200 GIs died trying to reach because there was an anti-aircraft emplacement there.

"After the Battle" magazine does a great job of this as well. Each issue chooses a handful of individual battles, retells their stories, and then matches contemporary photographs with modern ones taking from the same locations. It's interesting how many of the european buildings are still standing and / or recognizable.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Who's sweeping it under the rug? WW2 history is everywhere, it's probably the most documented period in human history. Also, the war ended over 60 years ago, that's plenty of time to restore their cities.

Wow, if you think there are no signs of war then you just aren't looking.

Did you see this? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiser_Wilhelm_Memorial_Church)

Or how about Peter Eisenmann's Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe?

Maybe Daniel Liebeskind's Jewish Museum?

I've spent extensive time in Berlin and other german cities; you can still see Russian/American graffiti, bullet holes, stone and masonry work blackened from bombing fires...sure, there aren't big signs saying "Hey guys we started WWII we're super super sorry" but what do you expect?

Relics of the war are everywhere if you look for them...my guess is that you didn't see any while drinking beer at 11AM with your business buddies and now assume the entire country has forgotten about the war...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You did not open your eyes and you did not talk to a single German beyond ordering more beer while you were there, you did not notice the painstaking preservation of history, the memorials, the warnings in various forms all over the city to never let fascism happen again. I hope you were at least also wearing a Hawaii shirt, shorts and white socks with sandals, because if you're going to be stereotypically ignorant you might as well go for the whole package.

Actually this is not my opinion at all.

Berlin is full of history from the war. The people accept their history and learn from it. High school students are required to go to two concentration camps through their schools to graduate.

The KW church still stands as it was the day after it was bombed by the RAF. They have removed a lot of the other things because the city needs the space to thrive, but memorials exist in places if you know where to look for them.

If you go to von stauffenberg avenue, you can still see bullet holes there from the fighting.

Although most of it is gone since the city cant just keep the rubbles, people need the space to live and do business.

Weird things that I saw there: Hitlers office is now a chinese restaurant called Peking cafe.

Bunker is now a playground around apartments.

the Luftwaffe hq still stands as it did during the nazi days. it was never bombed and survived the war intact. It now houses an even bigger evil. Ther German Tax department.

Cant touch the wall :(

All pieces of the wall are fake.

If you are walking in berlin and see tram tracks or actual trams, you are in east berlin, former soviet territory.

Overall this is the best place to visit in the world. cant spend enough time here.

[–]matthewjvandeventer 1 point2 points ago

East Berlin is still broken in some sense. The parking lots are just bombed out city blocks that the Germans neglected to build again...
