Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Gotta wonder why he did that.

The claw was probably broken in some way that wouldn't heal on it's own, so he ripped it off so a new one would regenerate.

They do, but it takes seven episodes.

Just an FYI, the Dragonball Z Kai series is a pretty good abridged version of the series if you feel like a little nostalgia without all the fluff.

Can you imagine if you not only had the ability to regenerate a limb, but the upper body strength to simply tare it off in the first place.

Honestly one of the most badass things I've ever seen in nature.

Tare (pronounced /ˈtɛər/), from the Middle French word tare "wastage in goods, deficiency, imperfection" (15c.), from Italian tara, from Arabic tarah, lit. "thing deducted or rejected," from taraha "to reject" weight, sometimes called unladen weight, is the weight of an empty vehicle or container.

Weird how sometimes the wrong word is also the right word.

The spanish word chatara must share some etymology with that.

[–]smeezy 4 points5 points ago

According to the page that ivanover linked to, the claws have a built-in fracture point that makes it easier for the crab to snap the claw off.

I never claimed "tare" was not a word, but the usage in the sentence was wrong.

And no, those definitions still do not work in the context of the phrase "tear it off".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When used as a verb it makes perfect sense. Tare off and tear off are synonyms. With "tare off" meaning "to detach" so the phrase tare it off still works.

http://www.joesstonecrab.com/ figured this with stone crab claws. They take the leg, throw them back in the sea and a year later they have new crab claws again.

Highly sustainable and ecologic if you ask me

Does the leg grow a new crab too?

[–]T232 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. When harvesting season comes around for some crabs all that is taken is their claws. The remaining clawless crab is thrown back into the ocean to grow new claws so we can cut them off again and eat them.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

[–]rironin 11 points12 points ago

We take both their claws and throw them back? It's surprising that the crabs can survive long enough without claws to regrow new ones.

[–]RandomAsianGuy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Stone Crab (Menippe Mercenaria) Menippe-Greek, meaning force or courage Mercinaria-Latin, something of value

In order to assure the continued survival of the species: Only one claw may be removed so the crab can defend itself. Egg bearing females are not allowed to be declawed. The crabs are captured in baited traps. No spears or hooks are allowed. Four inches from the first joint to the tip is the minimum legal size, that's about two ounces. A colossal can weigh 25 ounces or more. The large crusher claw can exert extreme pressure. As much as 19000 lbs. per square inch. Although their massive claws serve as deterrents to most predators, fishermen have reported the stone crab falls prey to the octopus. Stone crab season in Florida runs from October 15th to May 15. Stone crabs exhibit carnivorous feeding behavior. Sometimes in traps they resort to cannibalism! The claws make up half the weight of the whole crab, they are removed by carefully grabbing from the rear and twisting. The crab is returned to water and the claw regenerates. It takes between 12 to 24 months to reach legal size again. In 1963 stone crabs cost 30 cents a dozen wholesale."

[–]SenatorVreenak 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The smaller legs have small claws at the end, and it is these claws that they use to pick up bits of small food. They are scavenger animals, typically. The large claws are for defense and fighting.

[–]Katzenklavier 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So what you're saying is that you're actually preventing crab warfare by declawing them?

[–]Kryptus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do they feed themselves without claws? Wouldn't many crabs die that way...?

[–]PemCorgiSelphie 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Anyone who has owned hermit crabs may know this is fact. They accidentally throw limbs down all the time (from stress, or fights, or damage)... a few weeks later they burrow under the sand to molt and come up with a new leg (or claw, or antennae, maybe even eyes)

[–]right_in_two 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These guys could have used that ability...

I'm going to hell.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

[–]Patrick5555 45 points46 points ago

Why can't I regenerate limbs yet? I think my fapping arm is a few miles over warranty

[–]englishred 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure if you got rid of your fapping arm, your upper body strength would be completely shot.

[–]EmperorSofa 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why can't I regenerate limbs yet?

Cancer, and the bodies mechanism of copying cells and growing tissue is imperfect mostly.

It's also the reason you can't live forever.

[–]puterTDI 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so...the crab lives forever then since it can regenerate?

Methinks these are two different things.

[–]mindbleach 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some lobsters are believed to experience negligible senescence, AKA clinical immortality. Ironically this is not necessarily a winning evolutionary strategy - shorter generations of smaller individuals experience more rapid genetic selection against environmental threats and produce a more fit overall population.

[–]morpheousmarty 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That doesn't really explain why the current generation just doesn't live basically forever. Not that it would be hard to guess why, living in the wild probably is dangerous enough to keep anything from surviving more than a hundred years or so.

[–]mindbleach 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Environmental factors plus occasional cancer are enough to keep the oldest lobster young in practice. If humans faced cancer but didn't grow old in the traditional sense then most people would still struggle to reach 200.

[–]Anearion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Surely that's not the case; I would've thought lack of "ageing" would be little help against environmental threats, it would merely serve to have the fittest survive longer to perpetuate their genes.

On an unrelated note, having Chrome teach me how to spell "environmental" whilst writing this post means I now cannot say the word in my head without emphasising the first "n". Godamn.

[–]mindbleach 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would've thought lack of "aging" would be little help against environmental threats

Pretty much. Assuming all their kids are born close together, parents only have to stick around until that generation is old enough to have kids of their own - at which point the parents are mostly taking up resources. Obviously this dynamic shifts in social species, but not so wildly that having your great-great-great-grandfather helping in the hunt is better for your genetic lineage (and more importantly, his!) than replacing him with a son or daughter.

it would merely serve to have the fittest survive longer to perpetuate their genes.

Not even that, in female mammals. After 45 years a human woman is as useful to her gene pool as a gay uncle.

Godamn.

Are you sure Chrome's spellcheck is set for English?

[–]EmperorSofa 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]SirNoitall 0 points1 point ago

What EmperorSofa said.

Also check these dudes out: Turritopsis nutricula.

Its "immortal" as its capable of reverse its aging process by turning back to its polyp stage. If humans could do this, they could switch back to Embryonic stage, and regrow any damaged organs or limbs. Seeing as how this is the only time a human can grow limbs/organs. Also; immortality.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on
