A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

I'd rather have a good game that's been reworked 5 times than a pile of shit.

Patience is a virtue.

Well, the DNF we're getting now isn't really the same one promised to us in a time long past. This one has only been in development for a few years.

It took them long enough after release to implement hats, which are the real reason anyone plays it.

[–]darkplumb90 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's also a pretty good reason a lot of people have stopped playing it.

[–]Snow_Monky 4 points5 points ago

Well, the heyday is over. Best days were in 2009 before hat crazes. I think CAL left and overall it's not as competitive or popular as it was back in 07-09.

Pubs are worse. Skill has increased, but so has the lack of regular servers with standard rules. PUGs failed. The only thing keeping it alive is really the hats. A large portion would leave without them, just as a large portion would have left without achievements or idling.

It's fairly impossible for a new user to start playing the game and have fun now. It just looks like a Disney World parade now; fucking sensory overload.

There are company's like this. I lost my wife to cancer 2 years ago. She worked as long as she could (a large multinational) while taking chemo during the last recurrence but finally it became impossible. We went in to meet with her boss to discuss her options (long term disability, resigning, etc) and I still tear up remembering that meeting. He said "Go home, do what you need to do, you're now on the payroll as a consultant, same pay and benefits." For the next several months people would call or stop by to "consult", mostly on how she was doing. And that was the case up to the day she passed.

I worked for a big american corporation for about 3 months before I got into my worst bike accident commuting to work. Woke up 3 days later in the hospital with a severe concussion and had to learn to walk and talk again.

The paramedics who picked me up on a large avenue at rush hour wrote "sports accident" in their report. No witnesses, nobody called the cops, no way to prove I was on the public way or a car was involved. The way our single-payer car insurance works, if I had any of the above to prove my accident happened at least where it hapenned I would have had a long term disability wage paid by the state (I own a car and have a driver's licence so I pay my state insurance).

The company kept me hired and paid me for a whole year until I could go back and use my brain again. My well ingrained 'corporations are heartless' paradygm couldn't cope with such dissonnance for a couple of months.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Corporations are made up of people, and people can have some heart. It's just when they group together and distance themselves from the consequences of their actions, it's harder for them to care.

Also in some areas it behooves companies to treat their workers well.

yeah, the "more than half the blood" thing struck me as....odd.

edit: apparently it IS possible, something about measuring in hemoglobin and "you lost half your blood" is a really dramatic way of putting it and a doctor wouldn't walk in and tell you that.

A team of specialists once brought me that news. I was diagnosed with UC in 2007, and have been in and out of the hospital ever since. Blood transfusions are about as routine as saline bags, and anemia is just a part of life. I also dropped from 150 pounds to 104 (I'm 6'0"), had my entire digestive system covered in ulcers resembling leopard print, and visited the ER weekly for almost two years. I've had eight surgeries in the past 12 months. I walked with a cane for two month-long periods (severe arthritis at 24), and once got stuck for a week in a room with no windows whose only exit was at the top of a staircase simply because absolutely everything hurt. That week ended in one of three total suicide attempts - the one with the belt and the doorknob.

There is no cure.

You might not guess from the sound of it, but bowel disease will absolutely ruin your life, and is becoming increasingly common in young adults. These guys did guess it, according to their own internal documents, but decided anyway to distribute a drug they knew to be toxic. Many of us with Chron's and colitis are now suing the shit out of them, naturally.

If you happen to be a on a jury for one of these hundreds of trials in the queue, give the victims every bit of what they ask for and then some. After spending three years of my early twenties in either a hospital bed or my own, I can assure you that they probably earned it.

As someone who was diagnosed with Crohn's 21 years ago, I'm am very much looking forward to the day when we have this beaten. I was one of the lucky ones, where removing "only" 3 feet of my bowels put me into "remission" for 19+ years. Unfortunately it's back, but at least under control with medicine this time. I've already told my surgeon that we'll be trying several non-surgical treatments before we pull out any more intestine.

My friend has severe UC, and he had to get a fairly rushed blood transfusion once because his hemoglobin or red blood cell level or something was ~68 when it's supposed to be 120. Or at least, that's what I remember him saying at the time. Apparently he took a blood test one day, then got a call from the hospital a few hours later that day (the doctor had been concerned about his paleness and had put a rush on the blood test results) wanting him to come in for a compatibility test for a blood transfusion, which he got the following morning.

I could see that being the kind of thing they meant when they said he lost half his blood... maybe his hemoglobin or RBC count or whatever was half what it's supposed to be.

[–]bearicane 2 points3 points ago*

Depends on how fast you lose it. Remind me later and I'll call some surgeon friends of mine. I think one of them told me one time he had a patient down to 2 liters of blood, saline, and a prayer.

Update: Hematologist friend of mine says he once had a patient at 2.5 grams of hemoglobin per deciliter once.

I learned a little bit about Valve at GDC 2010, they're development methods are highly admirable. It is clear that they sacrifice a fair amount of efficiency, but quality is the main consequence. There are very few people who would argue that Valve isn't the best place to work in the game industry. I've never really heard of any other company that nurtures creativity and talent quite so much.

[–]Quady 4 points5 points ago

That's all I'm seeing to. Oh, and she says her reasoning was that the new company offered her a higher-up position than Valve did. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

It is from that app, but the author mentioned that he is planning to create a version for other platforms soon. He just used the iPad due to the ability to embed certain media (i.e. 360 degree panorama views of Valve's offices that would not be doable on a Kindle). Not a bad way to spend 2 bucks though, I found it highly entertaining.

[–]Saiing 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But... but... he wrote it in bold. It must be fake!

Seriously though, it's this kind of shit that needs to be made an example of. Gabe Newell makes an incredibly generous gesture to someone who has only been in his company for a month. Some over-opinionated guy gets voted to the top for essentially claiming that it's a lie, based on nothing more than "I can only assume" and "I'm fairly sure".

Reddit has an obsession with scientific standards and provision of evidence whenever it points its grubby finger at the wider world, but then just throws that out whenever its convenient. People need to know it's not acceptable.

[–]ProfessorFoo 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think anything needs to be made an example of. rkcr suspected it was fake (a reasonable thing to do with no evidence available) and he posted why he thought so. It's better than just blindly believing anything. Well, at least it is if you don't want to believe a bunch of false stories.

It is kind of messed up he received so many up votes with so little to support his argument, though.

[–]Saiing 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think there's a big difference between suspecting something is fake, and writing this is definitely fake in bold as the first sentence in your comment. It's a shame he also took the coward's route and rather than retracting his comment, just hid behind the delete option.

That said, I think you're right. The huge number of upvotes for such a flimsy argument is the real damning indictment here.

Writing on Psychonauts would have finished much earlier than the game. The story isn't "definitely fake".

"The Final Hours of Portal 2" was created with Valve. They gave him exclusive access to the development for 3 years. You're saying that he used this access to make up a story about Erik dying, and that Valve signed off on it?

Instead of you maybe being confused on the game writing process and the time table? It isn't like you even have a date for his completion on Psychonauts or starting at Valve. You're just guessing and upvoted because you're cynical and we're on Reddit.

Then you're definitely going to hate my theory that he wrote Portal as a metaphor for escaping into a carefree fantasy world from a life made unbearable by inflammatory bowel disease.

Whether this is correct is up to the reader to decide, but with the amount of unreleased artwork, interviews and photographs in it, it's hard to argue it's not factual.

is up to the reader to decide

This story is either true or it's not. Saying "it's up to the reader to decide" is better suited for a cliffhanger ending to a fictional book series rather than a documentary.

Do I want it to be true? Yeah, sure, it's a nice story and would be great to see any employer treat an employee, especially an important one, with that level of respect, and it fits nicely with how I feel about Valve's games. Absolutely. However, foul play is being called with what seems like sound reasoning. It seems reasonable then to put the truth-or-shit decision on ice until the facts develop.

Deciding to believe the story as fact simply because you like it and it fits your opinion is not at all enough, especially when a business is concerned. People make and lose money on bullshit publicity all the time, and the timing is pretty awesome for Valve to stay mum on a never-before-heard story that makes them look pretty rad. It also helps this documentary make sales.

The article states that on Christmas Eve, 2004, Wolpaw was on day 27 of his Valve employment. Then on Christmas day, he spends the day in the hospital, and after that considers handing in his resignation.

So it's perfectly possible that he was just starting to work there in the last days of 2004 and a game he wrote at another company was released in 2005.

I think you are way way way overthinking this.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You realize that this "Final Hours of Portal 2" was created in partnership with Valve? They gave him exclusive access to the Portal 2 development process for 3 years. You're claiming, while having this unprecedented level of access, he made up a story about Erik Wolpaw dying, and Valve signed off on this story being published?

How do you know when Wolpaw started at Valve? Are their hire dates posted officially somewhere? You assume because Psychonauts was released in 2005 that he couldn't have written it in or before 2004?

Really where exactly are you going with this argument? It is nonsense and the only reason you've been upvoted is because the hivemind loves baseless cynicism and doubt.

Sometimes "public figures" don't like to tell the public that they are sick. Believe it or not, it is possible to keep these kinds of things quiet for a time.

The year could be a screw up, or this whole thing could be fake. Without more evidence, we can't come to any real conclusion.

If you're a Florida resident you could've dual-enrolled in high school and college starting at 16 or 17 in your junior year. Then you'd be kept out of college classes for a year, come back, attend more college classes, and use those credits to graduate high school..

Now carry on with the logic, good sir.

According to this, he tried to quit his job at Valve sometime in 2005. He didn't start working for Valve until after Psychonauts came out. Psychonauts came out in mid 2005.

Portal came out in October 07.

Sounds possible. Doesn't say when he went up to Gabe.

Really, 80 hour weeks don't improve things.

Thing is it's not uncommon for major issues to crop up near the end of development. That's the only time you have a complete game that can be fully tested all the way through. Some companies will simply fudge it. If Vavle are delaying it then it suggests they're actually fixing it.

When I was diagnosed I had lost so much blood my skin color was green and my body stopped producing more; became anemic and lost 30 pounds in a matter of weeks. I never got work off. Four day hospital leave when my legs lost feeling and my fever skyrocketed; upper endoscopy and lower endoscopy, shitting blood for months and not knowing why. Although now I only take 9 pills a day for it when I was taking 16 a day for it before. One thing I could have, and still can do with this disease; write. I would love to work for Valve. The gaming industry is becoming so flawed these days. It is becoming all about the money and to he'll with the people who make the games. Companies like Valve are the rare exceptions. My lady (Build Engineer) and I (Producer) would just be in heaven to work there. She has a better shot, as I hear that they do not utilize producers. But that may be just rumors. But being an agile development specialist, working for Valve would be working for a company I would retire with...which is rare now with the venture capitalist ruining the industry and destroying lives (see Gazillion).

Wait, do people actually hate Valve for delaying their games and taking a while to make them? I could see being a bit frustrated and anxious, but you know obviously the longer they spend making them, the better they are, and the games they spend ages making are pretty much always huge hits.

Whether this (or any other story) is BS or not, hating a company for something so silly as that is incredibly stupid. They make quality products, and that's the main thing you should care about. You're not somehow losing time or money because Episode 3 was delayed a year.

[–]makesureimjewish 7 points8 points ago

I wouldn't hate valve regardless. They make great games and have been releasing them pretty steadily. Sure the game I'm most excited for is still far off from the looks of it, but you won't find me complaning. Just patiently waiting and happy that a company obviously knows what it's doing

I'm probably alone on this opinion but Valve should just cancel Episode 3..

The whole point of episodic DLC is to release them within a timely matter of each other, not just for the first two and wait years after for the 3rd one. IMO, at this point Valve is better off taking what they had planned for Episode 3 and stretching it out into a full fledged game (Half-Life 3).

I've got to be honest, I wouldn't be terribly upset if Episode 3 never came out. I enjoyed episodes 1 and 2, but I wasn't terribly compelled by the story, nor was it any kind of significant graphics or gameplay upgrade from Half-Life 2.

What I would really like to see is a brand new engine and story arc, and a true Half Life 3. The same kind of upgrade we got from Half Life to Half Life 2. The episodes don't really do that for me.

Am I the only one?
