Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

My buddy was umpiring second base during that game. He called me right after the game was over actually. The ruling on the field stood and he was safe at home. He said he's never seen someone actually pull that off and be safe.

My friend (through a friend, but still a friend) was on the team when that happened. Small world.

One of our teammates did this in high school baseball in the late 90s. He didn't get tagged out and touched the base, but was called out. The ruling was that he didn't slide. In high school baseball, if there is a close play, the runner must slide for safety of the defensive player. Lame.

Do baseball players ever slide home feet-first? I'm thinking that this could do a lot of damage to a defensive player.

Honey, if you're gonna cleat someone, you have to remember to lead with your heel.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

All the time. It really depends on the position of the catcher and how close the play is, but yeah I've seen more people get hurt from slide then anything else, especially if you don't do it properly. A friend ended his college career as a catcher by sliding into second, putting his hand down jamming his shoulder upwards, which tore something in his shoulder.

EDIT: You can definitely take out the defensive players ankles and some try.

[–]Te3k 0 points1 point ago

So I suppose, then, that this makes the whole no jumping over defensive players because they might get hurt rule seem kind of silly, and redundant.

If this is true, this is why I love reddit

[–]x3knet 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

100% true. I played baseball all 4 years in college and got to know a lot of the umpires. We would have the same umpires for different games so a lot of us became friendly with them.

My friend in particular though grew up in the same town as me so we were always close. He's umps a lot of NJAC and A10 conference games around the area.

I don't have proof, but I have done that before. I hit a would be homerun and leaped over the catcher since he was crouched on the ground blocking any attempt at sliding. The other team's manager came out and yelled at the ump that I still needed to slide (the catcher dropped the ball as I jumped him). The ump (younger adult) looked at me and I shrugged and said "I don't care, we'll win with the mercy rule" (we were up by 10 runs) and I was called out. Like I said, I don't have proof, just a funny, similar thing that happened when I was in middle school.

We don't sacrifice virgins. That's not the way we roll. We kill people who sacrifice their virgins. Then we take the virgins.

Yeah watching Japanese MMA I always wondered why they didn't seem to care about anything. It takes a bit to get used to polite reserved Japanese fans.

[–]RoryZilla 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is why I love Japanese MMA. I went to both the Pride shows that were in vegas and it was a educated MMA audience. No booing. There was applause when there was a good scramble/sub attempt/sweep. Nothing like a UFC crowd...mostly morons.

Excuse me if this is incorrect but I believe he would be out if the guy managed to touch him with the ball, because he had been run off his base (all 3 bases and filled and then another person comes up and gets a single so everybody has to advance a base) so the guy just waited for him to run at him because he had to but he jumped over him, dodging the ball touch and managed to get back to homebase.

[–]WeberStateWildcat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If the bases were loaded, the catcher would have just had to touch home plate for a force out rather than needing to tag the guy running for home plate.

[–]Incontext 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a kiwi, so excuse the ignorance, what was the reason then?

[–]yoda133113 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because he was running for home. You score by crossing home plate, thus you run at times that you aren't forced by preceding runners.

[–]Incontext 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So if he wasn't being forced why did he continue running then? Just confidence in what he was going to do?

[–]WeberStateWildcat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, either he thought it was a good idea to run home, or the third base coach told him to run home. Here is a video of the play which makes things easier to play out in your mind. The guy who did the leap was on first base at the beginning of the play.

[–]Incontext 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, I think I kind of follow it now. The only time I've had the rules explained to me it was from some drunk girl sitting next to me when I went to the States. :)

[–]yoda133113 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, there's no use turning and going back at that point, he'd just most likely get thrown out at third (if he could even stop in time before the catcher tagged him out, full tilt one way to running the other way takes a few steps).

I was watching a Little League game of my nephew's when this happened. The kid didn't go as straight over the top as this guy does, but it was impressive.

He was ruled safe, though he should have been out, as in Little League, you must slide on a play at home plate, feet-first.
