In reality they screwed up the script but lucked out because the audience is ill-informed or doesn't care about science. Consider also, the shots of starships rumbling through deep space. Where is all the light coming from to illuminate them? What medium is the sound from the engines travelling through? It doesn't matter because the ships look impressive so you don't really give two shits if it's consistent with science or not.
