I was being tailgated once while passing other cars on the interstate. Read that I WAS going faster than the other traffic and over the posted speed limit. When I moved over after passing the other cars, guy swerves in front of me, cuts me off, leans out the drivers window and points a pistol at me.

3 months later, he was convicted of felony menacing. Time in jail, counseling and forever a felony on his record.

People rarely have a problem with letting people pass, but with dicks tailgating or switching on their high beams. There's no reason to positively reinforce dick behavior.

If someone tailgates me I'll drive slower and slower until they get the point and back off.

I don't know whether you think you're the only driver who gets annoyed by cars driving too slow, that happens to everyone regularly. Just keep a reasonable distance, pay attention to the street ahead and wait for an opportunity to pass the car in front of you.

Not that hard to not be a dick.

This is exactly the attitude I don't understand. How does letting someone pass you equate to "taking it up the ass"? Even if you have to pull over to a turnout to let you'll only lose maybe 4-5 seconds, and the drivers of the 6 cars trailing behind you will be extremely happy to proceed at their desired pace. I guess 5 seconds of your day is too steep a price to pay?

I used to drive a narrow twisty canyon road every day to work, and I saw this shit several times a week. I ALWAYS let people pass me, even though I drove quite briskly (no posted speed limit).

I don't know why you're being downvoted. Your suggestion is drivers ed stuff. Failing to allow someone to pass creates all sorts of hazards, for everyone. The number of accidents caused by drivers attempting to pass these dangerous drivers that refuse to pull over is high.

I can assure you that I was not suggesting you drive off the side of a bridge to your death to enable aggressive drivers. However if you are on a four lane road, driving well under the speed limit and at the exact speed as the car in the adjacent lane, perhaps speeding up or slowing down a bit and merging over would be a better idea than making the other driver wait until a third lane opens up.

It allows someone else to endanger both you and the other drivers on the road by driving recklessly and tailgating. If you pull over, it shows them that it works and is acceptable.

Driving narrow, twisty canyons, though is a different story, though because an enraged driver is often unpredictable and could easily send both you and hisself to a fiery death.

The people that drive the fastest on these types of roads usually aren't being reckless, they're the people like me who know the roads very well. Even if someone is driving recklessly, and is tailgating, the safest thing you can possibly do in that situation is let them pass. There's really no excuse, sorry.

Because fuck them. You pull over to let one speedy asshole pass and there will be another on your ass in no time. I already drive a bit over the speed limit on a pretty dangerous fucking road and the dipshits behind me can get to their destinations 5 to 10 seconds later rather than me having to pull over multiple times for them to break the law. Don't even get me started on them riding close enough to crash into me should a deer or something run in front of my car.

If you did this where I live it would take you 45 minutes to make a 7 minute drive. Everyone drives like a moron on a two lane, curvy ass road that is poorly maintained. To pull over you would either need to turn onto an even worse road or pull into someones driveway and hope for an easy exit at some point. There is always an endless stream of morons happy to do 45 in a 35 making it retarded to 'let them pass' as you suggest.

In my experience, the reckless driver is quite rare. 9 times out of 10 it's an experienced driver in a smaller car stuck behind a very large vehicle, or very inexperienced driver driving well below the safe speed. Even if there's someone driving at what you consider to be unsafe speeds and is tailgating you, the safest thing you can do is let them pass.

This is where you're wrong. Pulling over doesn't mean there's a winner or loser, or that you're being shafted. It just means you're letting another person drive past you, because you're holding them up. It's about common courtesy, not aggressive tit-for-tat. I guess this is the difference between the person who just wants to pass you, and you, who insist on taking it personally. News flash: they don't have a vendetta against you. They didn't wake up that morning and think "how can I piss off scy1192"? They just want to get where they're going, and you won't let them. You're not taking it up the ass; they are.

Maybe it's a parent or other loved one in the hospital, or a wife about to give birth, or someone that's late for work and risks being fired if they show up late. Whatever you may think about their reason, you really never know what sort of situation somebody is in for them to decide to drive faster than you deem necessary.

Also, think of it this way: do you so explicitly trust everyone behind you to not follow you home and stab the shit out of you because you pissed them off? Don't cause unnecessary confrontation, even if you think the other person is wrong.

I've actually done this. But I had a Glock 19 and some high school kids in a truck were next to me, swerving almost hitting my vehicle, and yelling obscenities.

I pulled out my gat, raised it to my lips, and kissed the slide. Needless to say, they slowed down with remarkable rapidity and vanished down a side street never to torment me again.
