Tetanus is a condition caused by the neurotoxin released by (Clostridium tetani? Now this is the target area is the tetanus toxin and what happens in that one of the 3 SNARE proteins is rendered ineffective (these SNARE proteins are what enable vesicle fusion [vesicles are filled with transmitters, to be sent to the next cell; when they fuse with the membrane of the same composition they empty their contents into the space on the other side], one protein attaches to vesicles and the other two to the cell membrane (this is often at 'dense areas' where synaptic transmission is concentrated) and when they meet a zipper like action causes the lipid membrane of the vesicle and cell membrane to fuse.). The effect of this is that inhibitory signals can not longer be sent, so once something is activated is won't stop. This leads to ridged paralysis and death by exhaustion. In botulism the toxin can target all 3 SNARE proteins but just happens in the first never cell, not the inhibitory one. The effect of this is flaccid paralysis. On most honeys there will be a warning not to give to infants under 2 years; it is thought that their immune systems cannot handle the botulism that might arise after eating spores in honey (which can survive the postulation process).
