TIL about mint.com. Seems like an interesting service. Have you found it to be valuable?

[–]randomdestructn 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mint user here: Quite, as long as it works with your banks. Great to see all details on one 'heads up' screen plus ability to search and plot data. They also have a smartphone app with pushed transaction alerts (large withdrawl, etc) if you're into that.

[–]triad203 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I liked the idea, but couldn't bring myself to do it. My biggest issue with Mint.com is that of personal data security. If one company has access to ALL of my financial data, and stores that in their database(s), that introduces a fairly large risk, in my estimation. I would prefer they provide software that allows me to manage all of my accounts, but not store the account information on their servers. I am an IT security wonk, so maybe I'm paranoid because I see this too much.

[–]webmonk 1 point2 points ago

What I found when I tried it was that it was mainly a way to try to sell you direct advertising. "Oh, you have some credit card debt? Would you like to consolidate it all with this special offer?"

[–]relocopter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have found it extremely motivating but opposite of the norm I imagine. I was poor as a kid and even though I got through life fine and have been earning for decades now I sit on the edge of being a miser.

Mint has allowed me to see I am in a good place and way ahead of any targets I had floating around in my head all those years. Now I can spend that extra bit of money here or there and not worry that I blew some cash that would have earned interest.

I feel less inhibited monetarily now since I can see how things are doing fine.

Bankruptcy?

[–]tayto 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on the debt. If it is a student loan through a school that receives federal aid, it cannot be discharged through bankruptcy.

[–]Dfube 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless it has changed, you can in Canada. I don't recommend it though.

[–]shiftpgdn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the United States George W. Bush passed (and pushed for) a law that makes student loans follow you around forever because there is no tangible good for the bank to take back.

Though I've heard of students rolling their student loans into a mortgage and then immediately declaring bankrupty as a loophole. It's not a terrible idea when you're sitting on a quarter million dollars in student loan debt and the only job you can get is serving lattes.

[–]King-Babar 1 point2 points ago

You should see the homeless people in Boulder Colorado. They are ballin'. I've seen them carrying debit cards and cell phones and buying rounds of beers for all their homeless buddies at dive bars. They barely take pan handling seriously, they whip out puppets and fuck with people and tell jokes and shit. You'll rarely see a sad homeless person in Boulder.

[–]aphextron 15 points16 points ago

Funny, I once knew a homeless woman with tens of thousands of dollars in the bank. We used to see her in Atlantic City. She told us she preferred to be homeless so that if need be, she had to money to gamble.

She came in every night to the Starbucks I worked in and ordered a tall chamomile tea, and would nap in a comfy chair. She was one of my favorite regulars.

The comic was showing net assets. Presumably the value of the roof is already accounted for.

[–]Hank_Moody 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except it clearly was not accounted for, which is why the cartoon is not actually showing net assets. It doesn't conveniently make the cartoonist's point the other way though.

I had my roof redone for only $8,000. Is yours made out of gold leaf or something?

[–]pseudolobster 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Generally when you buy a roof it's a wise investment to buy walls to hold it up at the same time. Often, people enjoy installing those walls into a foundation of some sort, and by the end of it you're in for a whole house. Incidentally, I wish you could buy a house for $150k around here. The cheapest 1br shack around here costs at least double that.

[–]sjl127 1 point2 points ago

The problem is that the general public just doesn't understand what cash flow is. You have to account for a lifestyle somehow.

[–]Mackinstyle 28 points29 points ago

Kinda like saying that the U.S. is the poorest nation because it has the most debt. While that may be true, the U.S. has the great power to generate capital. The hobo doesn't.

i always thought this comic was clever until i realized that everyone except the student could just cash in their property and have many thousands of dollars plus.

[–]pounds 288 points289 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Net worth = total assets - total liabilities. This includes long-term assets such as property. So the people here that own property have more debt than the value of those properties.

[–]junkit33 207 points208 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except it's surely being used wrong in the comic. While it's not completely unrealistic that all of those people walking around are carrying around some debt, it's highly unrealistic that they all have negative net worth.

For example, the primped up jogger with the ipod that has "-$2345" credit card. She could probably sell off a bunch of her wardrobe and pay off the credit card.

[–]cheerfulstoic 59 points60 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably, but what if the comic already took that into account and she has $10,000 in debt and $6,755 worth of stuff?

Also, I feel that the child should have $0 over her head, you know, for kicks

His drawing was an account of wealth drawing only on accounts of wealth. He made it as black and white as possible in black and white. He probably didn't think it would pay to pay the child, or maybe that it would be negative if the kids balance wasn't negative.

Yeah, but what if the hobo sees a rainbow colored rat running down the sewer and he follows it and ends up in the kingdom of the magical vegetable fairies and a princess falls in love with him and marries him so that he becomes king of the broccoli people, who are the most fortunate vegetables of all because none of the children want to eat them, and then one day he's walking through the palace gardens and finds a horde of buried gold but the fairies don't know that gold is valuable so he slips away in the night with his new found wealth and starts a foundation for helping redditors get out in the evenings and meet people?

[–]junkit33 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, because the author labeled the bubbles with "student loan", "credit card", "car loan", etc. Net worth takes everything into account.

So all we know from the picture is that these people have certain types of debt - they could hypothetically still all be wealthy. For example, you could easily have a car loan and have a net worth in the millions - those 0% car loan deals are attractive to anybody.

What? You're joking right? The only thing you should consider when calculating net worth is maybe the resale value of a car. Everything else, like clothing and ipods is considered $0 in value, at least for me. Honestly, how much can you make parting out your wardrobe? Or selling of your electronics?

Chances are you really have no net worth if you are considering things like clothing and ipods.

[–]netcrusher88 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I highly doubt it. What kind of property are you talking about? Most small items have very little market value used, relatively. Technology can maintain market value well sometimes, but if it's that new market will likely be far below intrinsic value so it would be a net loss to convert it to cash. There are larger items, sure, but most vehicles are either upside down, on a lease, or not a very high market value (and vehicles have a very high intrinsic value). And of course there's real estate, but the market crashed and something like 50% of mortgages are upside down, which was more or less inconceivable a few years ago - and again with the intrinsic value. If people even own real estate - the ownership rate in the US is somewhere around 45%.

[–]hotwife42 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand that the comic is making a comment on debt in modern society but... at least in America, it's unlikely that the majority of the people pictured would have a negative net worth.

The typical American household has a net worth of about $90,000. Slightly under 25% have negative net worth, but it's likely that this group largely consists of people who are one or more of: young/unmarried/renting/uneducated, and even this is no good guarantee of negative net worth as the median net worth of each of these demographics - while much lower than the general population - is still positive. Meanwhile, the median net worth of households with the head of household over 35 is ~$200k, of couples ~$150k, of homeowners ~$230k, and of college graduates ~$280k. (Source, table 4.)

if you count physical property then the numbers change slightly, except for the college student. the whole premise of owing money is that you get something ( a house, a car, whatever) in return.

[–]RelevantMusic 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because going to a community college, only buying things you can afford, and not spending money you don't need to is so hard.

I try to only spend money on things I have the money for. The only possible things I can see myself spending money on that I don't have is a house and possibly a car. And even then I'd just buy a shit-box that would stay running like an old buick. Am I naive in saying this?

I feel like spending lots of money is this unbreakable American taboo that no one can break from even though it's not that hard at all.

There was a lady in the US that got caught in an simple scheme.

Her husband worked and she didn't. She would dress up like a bum and go panhandle on a busy spot and bring in sometimes over $400 a day in change - tax free!

If you do the math - if you find a spot where 50 people a minute walk-by and only 1% of them give $1. That makes $30\hour salary, tax free. More than alot of folks out there make.

However for most than panhandle, it is not by choice and not an easy life that is often riddled with additctions and abuse or mental illness.

When I got my mortgage about a year ago, my plan was to pay it down as quickly as possible. Recently, however, I realized that the growth of my investments is higher than the interest rate on my mortgage - So, although it kind of bothers me, it is to my advantage to stay "in debt".

I'm laughing because I'm not homeless and I rent a house but I have zero debt. I don't own a single credit card, and everything I own I have bought with money I actually had.

[–][deleted] 139 points140 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand this mentality. If you have enough self discipline to use a credit card properly (and it sounds like you do), why not take advantage of one?

I have a rewards card and I put everything I can through it. I pay off the balance in full every month and this way I generate a free plane ticket at least once a year. The consumer protections are nice too. A couple of times I've had a problem with a merchant and one call to my credit card company made it all go away.

[–]patcheswfb 48 points49 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Completely agreed. As long as you don't spend more than you have and always pay the full balance (basically using it like a debit card, and with autopay it's dumb simple), a credit card gets you some nice benefits like better fraud protection and building a credit score with no cost.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

building a credit score with no cost

This is very important, even if you never intend to borrow money. Some employers have started using credit scores as part of their hiring process and not having any credit history could mean you don't get hired.

[–]Nine99 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Stupid employers.

[–]mdoddr 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For real. You have a low score so they assume... what exactly? Like I want to work for someone like that.

[–]lastbastion 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The explanation I have been given is that an employee with a low credit score is more likely to do something unethical/illegal to satisfy their creditors. Of course, a credit score is just a snapshot and doesn't provide much context.

[–]beedrue 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't speak for all cases, but my employer checks credit scores because sometimes my coworkers have access to valuable information. In theory if they were 100k in debt, they might be more likely to sell that information. Still not a very good solution to the confidentiality problem though.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They just look for bad credit though, not necessarily 'good enough' credit.

The idea is that they want to ensure your a responsible person. Someone who has welched on debts with a wrecked credit score, might be an irresponsible person.

[–]hamhead 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hell, landlords look at credit score, nevermind employers. So do insurance agents.

[–]ender52 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I can't comment on employers checking my credit score, I had no problem getting a loan to buy my house and I'd never had any credit cards or any type of loan before. They saw that I had a job where I earned more than enough to make the payments and I was approved.

What if you're bad at handling a credit card, like an alcoholic may be with alcohol?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My understanding is that if you use Mastercard or Visa payment system (their logos in the card) in your debit card, you get exactly same fraud protection. Of course, that money is missing from your account for some time, but you get it back (This might differ from country to country)

[–]rnelsonee 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Another "I agree" post, but with more benefits. Including the ones mentioned, here's what I get with my credit card, which costs me nothing to use. I don't count fraud protection or ease of use for reversing mischarges, as you don't really need it with cash anyway:

1) Convenience (I do less than one ATM visit per month)
2) Build credit history
3) 1%-5% discount on everything I buy (cash back)
4) Free spending tracking with my bank, compatible with sites like Mint.com
5) Free insurance on car rentals

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of bank debit cards offer the same sorta deal.

I've never had a credit card in my life, and I'm a 30 year old homeowner. My debit card/checking account pays 2.47% and refunds my atm fees (wherever I use an ATM). The bank also has a pretty awesome fraud department.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never found debit cards with generous rewards programs or comprehensive consumer protection packages. Credit cards often give you automatic rental car insurance, price match programs, and automatic extended warranty programs. Does your debit card do this?

[–]mindaika 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They also cost you (and everyone) in the long run in ways you can't see (namely card fees charged to merchants).

[–]djg38 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Upvote for mentioning that. Everywhere you buy something with a rewards credit card pays a higher transaction fee than if you used a non-rewards card. That's where the rewards money comes from.

I'm laughing because I own a house with a reasonable amount of debt and use credit cards in a reasonable manner such that they are a financial advantage, not a burden, and half the people on Reddit seem to think that the only way to avoid being screwed by the financial system is to avoid the financial system altogether.

[–]RobbyTheSheef 2 points3 points ago

You HAVE debt though. That's simply not for me. If you can manage it's your business, but I don't think most people can. I don't want to put myself in any sort of hole, regardless of how shallow it may be.

[–]Liftfixin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It takes money to earn money. I'm in debt from student loans and for my home mortgage but school got me a career and every payment I make to my house is actually me buying my house so the money comes back to me. I'd rather be in a temporary hole then stranded at ground level with nothing.

[–]mikeash 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not a hole when my net worth is still significantly positive.

If this plan works for you, that's great, but don't act like everyone who works within the system is a fool.

[–]RobbyTheSheef 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not everyone. I wouldn't even say most of them are fools. I just think it's silly that we put out this idea that EVERYONE has to have 3 credit cards, 2 cars and a mortgage. Not only is it unrealistic to assume that everyone can afford such things, it's foolish to think everyone can handle that responsibility. Some people just suck with money and need to learn how to live within their means. Not you, just some. Maybe my initial post seems smug and douchey, but that's not how I intended it.

[–]Dolewhip 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's pretty awesome. I've been doing the exact same thing my whole life. Do you have any worries when it comes time to get a mortgage and you have no credit history though?

[–]RobbyTheSheef 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm happy with renting. I don't really want a mortgage, because then I'll have a pile of debt. Just the idea of owing someone that much money scares me, so I'm avoiding it. Maybe I'm weird, but it's been working out so far.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One of the most interesting things I learned in university was when my economics professor directed our interest into comparing wealth between nations and it turned out that he, nor nobody else could say what is the net wealth difference between median American and median Swedish household. All data that gets mentioned is either average wealth (where US rules because billionaires skew the results) or median income (again something where US rules because they pay less taxes and must pay for things citizens in welfare states get free). So he went and did some quick digging in economic databases for next lecture. It turned out that citizens in both countries had almost the same median net wealth while they have relatively different economic policies and their net incomes differed.
