WHAT?! A BIKE RACE?! BUT I'M LATE FOR WORK!

[–]blueflash777 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The funny thing is, he was actually quoted as saying "But I'm in a hurry!"

[–]cwstjnobbs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wasn't a race, it was deliberate traffic obstruction by a terrorist organisation.

[–]klimb411 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whats more of a terrorist action, biking in the street where bikes belong or driving over bikers in your car?

[–]timmeh87 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cars also belong in the road... I think you mean "whats more terrorist, obstructing traffic or homicidal road rage"

[–]cwstjnobbs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bikes belong on the edge of the street where they are not in the way. They do not belong spread out across the entire road (including the oncoming lane)

The cyclists were doing this deliberately in order to piss people off, the driver of the car was angry, the car assault was not premeditated like the obnoxious obstruction was.

The driver of the car was a nutjob, not a terrorist.

[–]rocketvat 2 points3 points ago

If you think a single person in this story is a terrorist you are a fucking idiot, end of discussion.

[–]l3gato 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And the bikers were protestors, not terrorists. The object of a critical mass ride is protest aimed at building bike awareness; the object of terrorism is to create fear.

[–]SupCthulhu 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"bike awareness"...really? People know about bikes. They've been around a while.

[–]l3gato 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Bike awareness" is not informing people about the existence of bikes, it's asking them to be aware and alert to riders while they drive.

I'm not anti-driver (I love to drive, actually). I'm not someone who thinks that bikes should be above the law. But I do commute by bike, and even though I follow the laws, use bike lanes where provided, etc. I still routinely have close calls and run-ins with drivers who simply weren't paying enough attention.

Raising the awareness of those drivers is important if bikes and cars have any chance of co-existence.

[–]razzbar -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The driver of the car was a nutjob, not a terrorist.

Terrorist is as terrorist does. E.g. attack random people without warning.

[–]chewitt 5 points6 points ago

That word does not mean what you think it means.

[–]tom2275 -2 points-1 points ago

Committing acts of terror, say like.... plowing your car through a bicycle parade?

[–]wankyourworriesaway 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pfff, who finds that terrifying? I don't even ride a bike.

[–]razzbar -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not what it means either.

[–]kurin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

a terrorist organisation

That's a little hyperbolic, don't you think?

[–]wipemybutt -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A critical mass bikeride demonstration to bring awareness to an alternative form of transportation is HARDLY a terrorist organization.

Your reponse makes it seem like you're on the side of the driver? If so, you need help, sir.

Holy fuck at the number of people here basically saying what amounts to "dem cyclists got whut dey desurved." No matter how you feel about cyclists or the people involved in that protest, none of them deserved to be put through this.

[–]intisun 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Comments about this event demonstrate how cars can twist people's minds and sense of ethics. To them, obstructing the driveway is morally equivalent to plowing through people with a motorized vehicle.

[–]rocketvat 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe if the bikers didn't dress so sexily they wouldn't have been plowed without their consent.

[–]foofaw 3 points4 points ago

If they hadn't been on bikes, they would all have probably been killed.

[–]MemoryLapse 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely. Being on bikes raised their center of mass, which is why so many of them flew over the car instead of being dragged under. Then again, if they were on foot they probably would have been on the sidewalk...

[–]foofaw 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was thinking more of a protest scenario, where everyone takes to the streets and marches. If it had been that kind of deal it would have been a massacre.

I remember this happened around the same time Egyptian police were running over their citizens. I was pretty scared of cars by the end of February.

I know I'm not the only one who has had thoughts of doing this (though I'm never going to do it because I'm not a maniac). It's just a sort of revenge against every biker who has landed me in a traffic jam on a 2-lane road because they were too proud to pull over for 30 seconds to let the massive line of cars pass them.

[–]simonask 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is why you need bike lanes, like any civilized country.

[–]jeffandersen -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most countries have limited bike lane availability, thus, the roads are shared.

This just goes to show that Critical Mass does not work. It only frustrates drivers and pedestrians and hurts the causes of biker awareness and safety.

Is it bad that i'm psyched for it being a golf?

[–]hiruko100 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interestingly enough, this is old news. But allow me to elaborate on the situation. This is an event that happens every month in many countries all over the world. In this event, people get on their bicycles and bike down the road en mass to raise biker awareness. Unfortunately, this event has changed from being a peaceful "hey, there are a lot of bikers" to being an event where hipsters drive down the road as slowly as possible, and stop up traffic for hours in major cities worldwide. In this clip, the guy who drove through the crowd had had to deal with these douchebags for a while, so he finally got a new car, and just plowed through them. An unfortunate incident, but the bikers brought it upon themselves.

I downvoted you for implying that plowing a car into a bunch of cyclists is "using your brain" because they were obstructing traffic. That's like saying shaking your baby to death is OK if it was being really loud.

After reading the comments I'm glad I'm not the only person that upvoted this because a Critical Mass got wrecked. Running over the bikers is a bit much, but Critical Mass is just plain stupid and only used as an excuse to annoy drivers and get in the way.

agh - a little warning might have been nice. I bike everywhere and I've seen references to this incident and made a point of not watching them. // I'm not sure how much attention this got, but here's an even scarier (to me at least) incident involving cars and bikes. Taxi driver crushes cyclist

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

[–]Brudus -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wholey condone doing this to any and all people participating in critical mass. Attention people who want to get more awareness and rights for cyclist. Holding illegal gathering that block traffic is not the way to go about it.

[–]l3gato 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are so many things wrong with that...

  1. Bikes can't block traffic, because in most jurisdictions they are traffic. Worst case, they may be failing to yield right of way.
  2. Each critical mass is independently organized; most I'm familiar with get protest permits, which makes it a legal gathering.
  3. Civil disobedience -- that is, breaking the law in a way that poses no safety hazard to anyone else -- is a time-honored form of protest. It may be illegal, but it's not generally considered immoral.
  4. You're advocating illegal assault as a solution to what might be an illegal activity.

It's not that they are riding bikes, it's that they are deliberately causing an obstruction in order to irritate other road users.
