It'll do that. The thing that makes the gif stand out is that it nails the issue most people that can't see the illusion have. It attempts to demonstrate that the lack of contextual 3D information in the original shadow gif is what makes you see it one way, then the other. I've seen it so many times over the past few years that I can swap it back and forth at will. When confronted with it for the first time, though, the brain has no way to process the information. The moment you stop thinking about how it turns a specific way is the moment it starts turning the other.

The brain filling in information despite what actually exists is not a new discovery either. It's been posited by some that, to an extent, everyone sees into the future. There's a slight delay in the time it takes visual information to be processed in the brain, yet you seem to see things (at a reasonable speed) as they happen. Your brain actually extrapolates what is happening in the next few fractions of a second based on the visual information it already has and translates it to fluid movement. I haven't seen many arguments on this subject one way or the other, but the very anecdote itself puts into context the idea that your brain has a tendency to jump to logical conclusions as though it's hardwired to do so. That tendency is the basis behind optical illusions.
