Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

I acutally know the person who took this photo, his name is Antti Kemppainen and was here in Perth as part of a student exchange program in 2007

I can confirm that this photo is a 3 picture composite, Antti used 3 different cameras that night to get the effect, he used a 10 second shutter delay. (hence why some of the people in the foreground are blurred)

He of course sold the picture to the West Australian and a couple of other newspaper organisations

A month after he took that photo he enlarged it and made a run of 10, he sent some back home and gave us one as well, we have it hanging up in our TV room

The poster is referring to a comet. But it is not a single picture but three pictures stitched together. There was an article about it a while back... ironically on Reddit.

Transparent?

Funny thing is, the only way I remember the difference between Transparent and Translucent is through a joke I heard in second grade: What did the ghost call his mom and dad? Transparents!

God, popsicle jokes were worse than laffy taffy ones

I also thought translucent. I only know that word because I remember always selecting Opaque over it in the Options menu for Command And Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation for the PS1 (when selecting how I wanted the HUD to appear). Hmm, I guess that's also the only reason I know what "opaque" means.

I'm going to go ahead and say that its probably not a comet and most likely an airplane. The photographer says that there's a 10 second shutter on the image. That means that if a comet zipped by in 1 second, it would hardly make a dent on the image, yet if it was lights from a plane it would make a trail just like this. I've experienced this before in many video time lapses, the first time I saw them I thought there was a whole bunch of shooting stars, but yeah, just planes folks!

edit: alright so I learned comets go really slow and last for days, they're also rarely EVER seen, I still 100% believe it is not a comet but an airplane.

Hm okay that makes sense. But like he said, comets can be seen for weeks or months and you RARELY ever see them, do you think in a 10 second shutter a month lasting long comet would move that much? It's not moving that much. The "tail" sits there in the sky for days/weeks. It's not the photographic effect of a long shutter catching movement, it's a plume of dust and ice hanging in space, lit up by the sun.

It's not shopped in the sense that the things are fake, it's several pictures layered onto each other. I can confirm that in Perth Western Australia, a comet, fireworks, and lightning was occurring at the same time.

Yeah, not to burst your bubble.. But it's a composite. Not to mention (and I'm not saying this is for certain) that it's very easy to add fireworks and lightening using brushes in Photoshop.
