This isn't too surprsing. The VU records were a big influence on Bowie and Iggy. Bowie had a hand in producing some of Reed's most famous solo albums as well as reconstituting the Stooges to record Raw Power. Pop and Bowie co-wrote "China Girl", etc etc

Plus, they all loved drugs. And it was the 70s.
