Cool, this island is next to the one where I live at the moment (Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland). I took his picture a couple of days ago and it looks like a good hideout. I'd appreciate it if the zombies would stay zombies away though since I don't have a boat.

Alright, but you supply the chainsaws, shotguns and think of some one-liners. Best be prepared.

Haha, no that's just a friend of mine who came to visit. By the end of the week he kept complaining about hunger and then disappeared for some non-suspicious reason.

MyPancakesRback.... I'm with you. Let the others live in a tower with no doors or windows. I have yet to see a zombie swim.

[–]nikdahl 35 points36 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Zombies don't swim, but they can potentially walk along the bottom of the lake/sea.

[–]waltzingaround 19 points20 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think they'd be able to walk underwater. Dead bodies usually float and I doubt a zombie would be able to swim to take advantage of natural flotation. If anything, you'd have to worry about a zombie lucking out into floating toward the island.

If it could walk underwater I wouldn't give it long to make it past fish and other sea creatures that would probably rip them apart. So you're safe right?

Not so fast. Of course, if you planned on being on this particular island I would hope you would have it set up with some large gardens for a means of food (if it's able to sustain crops) and some chickens that can continually produce food.

If you rushed to this island in a haste however, and I assume you got there by boat, you would of course have to fish. But then it raises a hypothetical. If the fish you are catching can be contaminated by the zombies then you are fucked. No food source for yourself and you're dead.

To cover all bases I would make a helicopter pad on this bad boy, learn to fly and invest in a helicopter obviously, and fly to land in case you need groceries/other items. Plus that would break up the monotony of life on the island because you've got yourself a pretty solid safe house.

You'd never get too bored because you'd be able to look forward to going out every now and then to kill some zombies and stock up.

In conclusion, if my analysis is correct: This island + helicopter and skills = Great zombie survival strategy

Multiple movies portray zombies going through water. Zombi 2 and The Land of the Dead are the first that come to mind.

[–]waltzingaround 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, but in the events of a real zombie outbreak I still doubt their ability to make it to the island before being picked clean by sea organisms.

If they DID manage to make it there by walking there would never be enough at one time to have to worry about. Have some well-trained watch dogs to alert you so you can take down the threat. Dispose of the body by tossing it into the sea.

Even better, have some sort of perimeter that catches the zombies, barbed wire for instance, and torch them when they get hung up.

[–]itsgametime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Read World War Z. They can swim, according to the author.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no, they can walk on the bottom and climb anchor chains, but cannot swim. some float when bloated from decomposition

[–]itsgametime 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

damn my meandering, unfocused mind. was thinking "walk under water", meant to write "walk under water", wrote "swim".

[–]waltzingaround 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How fast though? Is it like threatening speed? Or slow enough for fish to pick them apart?

[–]itsgametime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my bad, I accidentally wrote "swim". meant to write, "walk on the seafloor".

I think in the book they were slow zombies. And I think the water slows them down too.

How far out to sea is this island? I think because of bouancy, they would start to float. Have you ever tried to walk on the bottom of a pool? You start to float if you go too deep. If the island is far enough out in deeper water, the zombies would probably start to float before they reached the island, and the currents would drift them away or smash them against the rocks, killing them.

[–]waltzingaround 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah whether they swim or walk I still don't give them much of a chance to make it.

[–]itsgametime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Giving this island a second thought, even though staying on it decreases your chances of finding survivors, if you can find enough food and a regular fresh water supply, I think this place might be better than that fort.

[–]hunkameat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Buoyancy, if I remember correctly, is controlled by air in the lungs and weight. You want to sink to the bottom of the pool? Blow out all the air from your lungs and you'll sink like a stone. Do it while holding a dumbbell and you'll sink even faster. What's the current thinking on Zombie pulmonary capability?

[–]itsgametime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

very good points. so, do zombies breath? excellent question. from what I understand, they do not breath (at least, that is the conclusion I gather from a lot of people saying that zombies can walk under water on the seafloor [World War Z also mentions this], because if zombies can walk under water for a long period of time, given your point that if you let your breath out you sink, then this is how they walk on the seafloor).

hmmm, so putting all this together, if they don't need to breath, then I guess they can walk on the seafloor. or vise versa.

[–]aaronbyard 0 points1 point ago

[–]itsgametime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. In 28 Weeks Later, the opening scenes depict the rage zombies running in the river. I think, though, that they are limited by how deep the water becomes (this would be a logical explanation for why the virus didn't spread across the Channel until the defenses for the Chunnel were overrun and the zombies were thus able to escape into France)

[–]HoboViking 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They had an anger virus is what I remember.

[–]itsgametime 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah, I've heard it referred to as the "rage virus". pop culture refers to those creatures in the 28 days/weeks later series as zombies, though, because they still tried to eat humans, and once bitten you were infected too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah but those aren't supernaturally animated in any way, they're just like super-rabid people. They still need everything a normal mammal needs to survive, particularily fuel (food) and oxygen. I'm sure they'd try to run down prey in a river but probably drown.

[–]crazedcanuck 0 points1 point ago

Unless you know how to maintain a helicopter and know where to get parts you're out of luck.

[–]waltzingaround 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the hard part. That would be the optimum solution albeit very hard to achieve. It would be much more reasonable to have a boat for travels but docking on the mainland could get troublesome if they're swarming.

[–]ssnseawolf 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even a boat needs maintenance and parts. It's clear anyone serious about zombie survival needs to start learning boat and helicopter repair, and start hording parts.

[–]waltzingaround 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. If the plan is serious enough then you have to know how to maintain it. That's why I'll admit the helicopter notion is a little crazy. It would be pricey to hoard parts I imagine. I would focus on getting spare parts after the outbreak.

[–]robinacape 0 points1 point ago

fish can be contaminated by zombies? fuck

[–]drevyek 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the zombie survival guide, MB says that animals avoid eating the dead; thus there is no fish contamination, and thus no hazard in fishing. this island is fantastic for more than this though- it also has these massive cliff faces which would tear apart any zombie on its rocks, and any surviving zombie would have no chance in scaling the clifface, even if he has prerogative to.

[–]The_Ace 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a general question about the nature of zombie apocalypse survival - how long do we aim to survive for? Obviously having a helicopter is optimum for island access and grocery runs etc, but in the long term we also need a supply of fuel within range of the island itself. Say there is a convenient airport within range at day zero, after several months we will be out of gas with no other sources within flying (and returning!) range...

Do we need to survive on this island alone forever, or is there a generally accepted timeframe for a zombie apocalypse to pass by itself? Or for the army to step in and cleanse all the infected? There must be a consensus on this somewhere?

[–]waltzingaround 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See what I was trying to do was point out how many variables there are with making the island the "best" option. The helicopter scenario is really like worst case scenario if you're unable to fish/farm.

Ultimately if I were to plan the island as my sanctuary I'd want to have it set up so that I could survive with only a small group of people. I'd want to stock up the island with as much living essentials as possible to prevent trips to the main land. Having gardens and chickens would be a priority of mine for food. Enough chickens and I have meat and eggs for a long time.

I would honestly not want to worry about the rest of the world. Sorry, but no heroic rescue missions for me. Ideally and hopefully fishing would be an option just in case. And the good thing about boats is you don't always need gas to run them.

Trips to the mainland would be scarce and only if it was a must. Hopefully the zombies would not be able to make it to the island through the water and I would be able to survive long enough.

[–]MyPancakesRback[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is what I was thinking.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Depends on the nature of the apocalypse. If it's Dawn of the Dead supernatual style, that shit ain't going to go away without help so it's a matter of regrouping with all of the other survivors and slowly reclaiming the world if possible.

If it's something like a 28 days later/Zombieland scenario where it's a biological infection causing the problem it should be possible to wait the zombies out as they're needing food and will start to die off from starvation once food is scarce or nonexistant. Or better yet maybe they'll turn on each other once they get desperate enough.

[–]The_Ace 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks, thats a good summary - if we're in the '28 days' scenario then an island retreat / zombie fortress is a very sound idea. In fact, it's practically minecraft at this point - dig a hole somewhere and hide until the zombies disappear :)

The 'dawn' situation is a lot harder, where we need a permanent solution with food sources etc, or else regroup like you say and fight back. Hiding away on an island like this would probably work, but would get pretty lonely if its for the rest of our lives. I'd rather find the survivors and fight back...

awwww fuck. Do you think the fishes will get them first though. I cant imagine them being very fast at walking underwater.

[–]acts541 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even if the zombies floated, walked to the island, I'm sure you would have plenty of time to develop a way they absolutely could not get onto the island. Get some land mines and line the whole sealine with them, when one blows up, put your goat milk, finish the bite of scrambled eggs, don't bother closing your robe up (unless its really windy) and go replace with another mine. You'd be set for life. Also, take a wife to prevent becoming a chronic masterbater, then inevitibly becoming a sex deprived maniac who eventually attempts to mate with a zombie who you've let get to you on purpose. Just take a mate with you.

yeah this seems a lot more pleasant to live in, BUT:

you would have limited supplies. it would be much, much more difficult to get supplies back to the island. that being said, if you could plant a big garden or something you could probably become self- sufficient (if you can get a permanent supply of fresh water), but until then, I think living there might be difficult.
