So it takes five minutes to leave the board in one piece?

Yes. It's obviously something the teacher has put a lot of time into understanding. You automatically start with five minutes on the clock. The for each extra piece you need to add five more minutes. At least that's what the explanation said.

i got the same exact question wrong about 16 years ago, in catholic school, and brought it up because i genuinely didn't understand why i was wrong. tldr teacher said i was wrong and didn't understand. she's dead now and i'm getting my M.D. in a month

Technically the question is quite poorly phrased, and both answers could be correct:

  • Imagine a square board with side of length 2. The first cut goes down the center of the board, resulting in 2 pieces, the width of each is 1. Thus it takes half as long to cut one of the 2 pieces in half to get 3 pieces. So the teacher's solution is correct. (As is her explanation that the 4th piece would take an additional 5 minutes (cutting the other piece).

  • if you have a 3x1 piece of board and want equal pieces, then the student's solution is correct. Cutting the board into 2 pieces, 1x1 and 2x1, and then cutting the 2x1 into 2 1x1 boards.

For instance, say the question had been reworded, and the question was "It took Marie 10 minutes to saw a board into 2 pieces. If she works just as fast, how long will it take her to saw another board into 4 pieces?" Would any of us flinch if the student wrote 30 minutes and the teacher said the correct answer was 20 minutes?

I'm just saying...

Good point but I can see the "board" in a picture next to the question. Looks like a stick to me.

Teacher just got it wrong.

Brilliant. I actually had a hard time understanding the error in this because I was thinking that it'd be a square board being cut in half (10 minutes), then cutting one half in half (10/2 = 5 minutes).

I guess it depends on how someone's mind perceives a word problem and interprets it. The question is indeed poorly phrased, and could be interpreted either way.

15 minutes, you can stack the 2 pieces of wood.

I can see if the teacher just marked it wrong and overlooked it. The fact that they then wrote out an answer that is just so stupid that.... ughhh it just astounds me...

My boss's daughter got this exact same question on a test, and got it "wrong" for the exact same reason. This is a perfect example of the source being wrong, and then accepted as fact by everybody downstream.

In other words, this is the same as every Snopes-worthy email that shows up in my inbox.

You saw a board in half, that's ten minutes. you saw one of the halves in half, that's half as wide, so it should take half as long. Of course, that assumes that the board is square... I agree that it's a stupid question, I'm just saying that there's a way that could be right.

umm i could be wrong but if the question states that u cut another board into three pieces it could be talking about a completely different board into completely different pieces right? which is separate from the initial 2 pieces

I have a buddy who works for the city. When he started he was really confused when he got the uniform and the shirt pocket was upside down, but he quickly learned that's so you can hold a shovel and lean against.
