Tomorrow I intend on withdrawing all my money from Wachovia and switching banks due to the recent scandal. Any tips on good US banks (not that they really exist or anything)? (andygale59.files.wordpress.com)

Use a credit union. The entire concept of the way credit unions are owned is different than banks. Credit unions are socialist/communist, and banks are capitalist. You own the credit union (along with lots of other people). 'Nuff said.
You'll generally find that credit unions won't nickel-and-dime you to the extent banks do, and their interest rates will be better.

Leave your money where it is until 30 days of opening the new account. Otherwise the new bank will hold your deposits for 7 days because you are a new customer. One the account is out of the penalty period then you can move your money.
It sucks, but thems the rules.

Credit unions are owned by the members. that being said. PNC gave me a 100 bucks to open a checking account. chase does the same from what I have heard.
You don't think there is a reason they give $100 to join? They make it up in fees. My buddy works for a large bank and he gets all our group of friends to join up every two years for the C-note. We wait 6 months then can withdraw it and he has met his quota. Join a Credit union. Every car, home or major purchase has come out of the credit union and their community based. Ours is teacher based and they have never made a bad decision. If not a Community Banks is excellent. They make decisions based on the neighborhood they serve and it's strength and weaknesses. My sis in law is a VP and they have been making a ton of good decsions the last 5 years based on the cash she brings home.
I support credit unions and I am a member of a credit union as well as having a PNC account. I must say that I like some of the things PNC has done for our company. I work for a company that works with adults with disabilities. PNC worked out a special deal to cash the adults checks without fees. We also operate a school where the students work on campus. They offered to give our students bank cards and give them accounts that free of fees and can't be overdrawn. I love my credit union, but I also don't like paying ATM fees when I can't make it to their branch to withdraw money. PNC reimburse you for any ATM fees you incur when not using their machines.

We have been members of a credit union for nine years and I would never go back to a commercial bank. The goal of a credit union is to serve its members. The goal of a bank is to make a profit. Don't get me wrong. I'm as capitalist as they come. But when socialist organization works, there's no way to argue against it. When a commercial mortgage broker bailed on us after approving our loan (not pre-approving but actually approving it) three weeks before our closing, our credit union jumped in and did something almost unheard of these days. They loaned us their OWN money! And they did it so fast that we didn't even have to change our closing date. From application to closing in 3 weeks! They were awesome. They also provided us with a credit card with an interest rate of 7%! And how many credit unions were bailed out by the federal government due to bad mortgages? None. Credit Unions are much more conservative than banks. And banks HATE credit unions and have been trying to make them illegal for years without success.
What we need are more types of businesses that work like credit unions. I've heard there are insurance companies that are set up like credit unions but I haven't investigated that.

Although I've moved away, I still use a small, local bank that offers great perks and service.
