This almost happened to me at a Toronto train station, back in '94. But we both stopped and graciously offered to let the other one through.

We're both still here.

Why would you have a revolving entrance that is also the exit?

[–]lifeinthewoods 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty common in NYC. Sometimes there isn't enough space for a separate entrance and exit.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because it's not always an even flow in and out. While the number entering is generally steady, the number exiting swells greatly after a train arrives and deposits them. Combining them saves a ton of space.

[–]Irnchkn 83 points84 points ago

If you live in Germany (and a few other places in Europe) and have people pushing you around all day every day, jumping in line in front of you, pushing you out of the way when you're trying to look at something on the store shelf, glaring at you on the bus for minutes on end while you're sitting there quietly not bothering anyone, etc, I will say there are times when you hit your breaking point and it's one rude act too many. I could definitely see myself doing this one day and feeling pretty good about it afterwards. I guarantee she'll think twice before pushing someone out of the way for a while and that only increases everyone's quality of life who would have been pushed around by her next. So she suffers for her rudeness and many quiet, polite people who wouldn't have fought back don't have to deal with her. Sounds pretty good to me.

[–]the_opinion 86 points87 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I guarantee you she won't think twice next time. I guarantee you she thinks she was in the right.

[–]Indoorsman 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I use to get so fucking angry and call people out, but as I thought about it more I realized that you really can't change most people, most are too stupid and self centered to do anything but twist and rationalize any situation to the point where they are always in the right. I have become much better and able to shrug them off mostly now, and much happier for it. I was a fucking anger ball for a while there.

[–]flandy 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uh, they don't make you pay when you're leaving a station. He was going through the wrong thing. His exit is that little door that only opens one way to the right.

Notice the woman making sure everyone pays says nothing to the woman going the right way.

[–]Stormshark 54 points55 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Usually the door to the right sounds an alarm when used. The door is mostly used for handicapped people and mothers with strollers. Everyone is supposed to use the turnstiles in or out.

[–]pimpolho_saltitao 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that is incorrect, there is no exit only door. these kind of machine thingies are usually 2 way, in some places they change depending on the volume of people going each way, but I suppose in this case they work both ways all the time. people don't have to pay on the way out, of course, but tickets are always validated at the entrance and at the exit, to minimize the chance of having people jumping the thing.

[–]dnw 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, why does the turnstile allow for exit the "wrong" way then?

[–]the_opinion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I went around noticing every little detail that sheds new light on stories, I'd never get to feel righteously indignant with little justification.

On the other hand, she's not saying anything to the guy going the alleged wrong way, either.

[–]chase_the_dragon 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are turn-stiles that revolve both ways. One way you have to pay, the other way it revolves freely.

[–]skeletor952 0 points1 point ago

She was in the right. She had already swiped her card so she had to go through the turnstile first. Boo hoo, you were inconvenienced for 2 seconds so you fucking trip a woman in the middle of a busy walkway inconveniencing not just her but everyone around you? Fuck off.

[–]BobbyKen 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He arrived first, and had a queue to face. His was not expecting her to swipe her card to force him out. Had he needed to swipe to leave, he would have swiped seconds before her.

[–]CaughtInTheNet 4 points5 points ago

Logically you are absolutely right and it is quite surprising that you are being downvoted. It seems most viewers just want to the woman to be in the 'wrong' so they can justify the enjoyment they derive from seeing her getting tripped. The man assaulted the woman just because of a discrepancy of mere seconds. Quite the bitter, unstable gentleman.

[–]dsoltesz 1 point2 points ago

[–]spoulson 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By the time the guy was pushed out and about to execute the bat-trip, the next passenger had already swiped her card. He would not have been able to make it through until someone showed a little courtesy. Tough system they run wherever that is.

Expats in the netherlands tend to view the dutch as rude, too upfront, and generally stressed-out.

This results in behaviour you depicted in your post. I tend to agree with that assessment, and i'm a native.

It has been a struggle to come to terms with behaviour like this, but what i found was liberating:

Do the opposite.

Smile when they glare. Give way to those in a hurry. Listen to your favourite music on a mp3 player so your mindset ascends that of those around you.

People that behave like in your post are in that moment not happy. Don't allow them to affect you, or you become like them.

In some ways the zombie apocalypse has already begun.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Don't just smile, make sure to also point and laugh. They'll quickly see the ridiculousness of their needlessly rude behavior, and join you in a hearty guffaw.

That happened in Bogota, Colombia. The lady was a complete bitch for not letting the guy exit the station (it happens every day) but the guy was a total ass. She didn’t deserve that kind of retribution, and it wasn’t a young lady, I think she almost got her a broken hip because of the fall, and above all, the guys keep telling bad things to her when she’s on the floor.

They even found the guy’s twitter and facebook account and won the fury of Colombia’s public opinion.

I always try to give way to people in Trasmilenio on rush hours, because it happens all the time. That’s my little contribution to the lack of generosity in Bogota’s society.

[–]Miglin 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When the woman reached the point where she was standing, she had already paid her fare to go through the turnstile. For her to let the guy walk through would entail that she has to pay again. The guy should have been more patient and looked where he was going. This guy is a fucking prick.

[–]kwietuhs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But it looks like she didn't pay until she walked up to him, and they stalled. Someone walks in front of them and you see her hand moving from the machine. But maybe I'm wrong? My csi skills leave something to be desired.

[–]Miglin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As you're walking up to a machine like one of these, you hold a prepaid card up to the beginning of the turnstile. By the time you've reached the part that you actually have to turn and walk through, you have already paid. Once the turnstile spins after this point, the fare will need to be paid again. The woman clearly paid her fare before the man walked up to the other side of the turnstile. Again, fuck him.

[–]kwietuhs 0 points1 point ago

This thread pretty much boils down to the sentiment "haha, dumb bitch."

It looks like they got there at the same time (I watched the video) and even if you think he got there first, why celebrate him tripping her? Why call her a bitch and say she got what she deserved? Why do you think she shouldn't have been in his way but it's okay for him to be in her way, especially since she is the one who paid. The conflict here is so minor. If someone did that to me I would get a little annoyed and move out of the way, and then I would continue with my day without giving it a second thought.

Yet we have this cool guy who just thought to himself "This woman is doing something wrong and I'll give her a little trip and that will really teach her a lesson." Except she didn't do anything really wrong, if standing in someone's way is wrong, it certainly doesn't deserve a punishment. And she didn't learn any lesson except that there are people out there that are willing to hurt you over the slightest conflict.

You can learn some things about how the reddit community views women just by reading these comments. Almost every single post in defense of the woman have been downvoted and many posts in favor of the man refer to her in nasty ways like saying a bitch gets what she deserves. People here like to feel like they belong to some kind of positive enlightened community but I think it's more about circlejerking over gotcha moments like this just like any other forum on the internet.

Other comments state that it was wrong specifically because she was a woman. Isn't that equally sexist/detrimental to the goal of equality that seems to motivate you?

You are right in saying we can't call it right/wrong because of gender, but I doubt anyone here really does that. It's more a case of one person being obnoxious and getting what he/she deserves.

What kind of ass-backwards design that station has that you can enter or leave thru the same turnstile?

Plus: if she doesn't have the right of way, is cutting the line or otherwise truly doing an uncivilized move on that guy, well, it's a damn woman and sorry if I may sound old-fashioned but as a man, you don't trip a woman unless she's a deranged killer with a weapon running after a child. I'd have say something scathing, maybe an all-out insult, but trip someone? What a douche.

Just as an aside, I believe treating people differently based on their gender has a name now. Sexism, or some such. Ridiculous, I know, but there you have it.

I live in Colombia and I saw this video a long time ago but she deserves it. Everyone here in Colombia thinks they are entitled to cut in lines and that they are more important than you. I see it everyday. Wait in line and give other people the respect they deserve. Thats living in a better world.

What a complete dickhead. Seriously, if two people reach that place at the same time, shouldn't the priority should go to the person who just paid money (so she doesn't have to pay again)?

Can you imagine if the guy who tripped her had been a cop? How much you wanna bet people here would be freaking out about police brutality and how the cops think they're so much better than everyone else?

wow, you guys are all fucking dicks. they walked up to the turnstyle at the same time, no one deserves to be tripped on their face for a second of inconvenience. that guy is clearly a petty fuck, gets butthurt about having reached the turnstyle at the same time so you trip a stranger?

hes lucky she didnt have a bad back or was walking around with an insulin pump that got ripped out or something.

you guys are the kind of douches that make the world a lot less pleasant to live in. walking through a turnstyle in the subway at the same time should never have to escalate to that. real adults be bigger person instead of being a petty dick.

the comment above mine from ilikecandy sums it up perfectly:

"They enter from different ends at the same time. Neither gave way. He is a piece of shit for elevating something so stupid to something physical."

If everyone in the world gets their feelings hurt for stupid little shit and feels the need to exact retribution for trying to walk past eachother the world would be a really fucking shitty place. The most that was warranted in this situation was for the guy to say "Hey watch out" or "I was first." No one should be physically assaulted for this. Dyou think this guy would have done that if it were a guy that was 2 inches taller then him? Or a police officer? No, the guys just a petty asshole who didn't get to have it his way and go first.

Good lord, if I physically assaulted someone in New York City every time they did something that I felt was bitchy, I would be in jail. I'd like to remind everyone that thinks this is funny or that she's a bitch that deserves it that he physically assaulted her. He felt that in some way (one that we can't even clearly see or agree on) that he was slighted and that tripping her (and she could have broken something) was justified. In my mind everyone who thinks this is OK and/or funny are the true bitches here.

Why is this guy getting so much praise? Priority goes to people entering the station trying to catch the train, not exiting. If everyone pulled shit like this it would get old pretty fast.

[–]The_Law_of_Pizza 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Priority goes to people entering the station trying to catch the train...

No, it doesn't. There is no official priority, and if there was it would fall on those who are exiting, not entering. See node-n's post below.

The real issue is that there were two paths. Naturally, one will be used to enter, and one used to exit. The bitch just didn't want to wait in line like everybody else. Once she saw somebody was trying to exit, she should have yielded.

[–]zeabu 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

priority goes to people leaving, because if not they will block everything inside. Pure logic, and announced on trains and metro-entrances in different cities, in accordance.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If the people entering didn't let people out, eventually the station would be so over crowded no one could move. This is why people exiting trains/buses get priority.

Native New Yorker . . . the appropriate etiquette is tough without more context.

If there was a train in the station that she was trying to catch . . . doors about to shut . . . he was a total jerk for getting in to the turnstile and blocking her way (not to mention the tripping).

If, however, there was no train to catch, the right-of-way should go to the person exiting, so she should have stood aside.

[–]ChaosMotor 108 points109 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right of way is always the person exiting. Are you one of those jerks that rushes into the elevator the moment its doors open and fight the people trying to get out?

[–]MaebiusKiyak 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. Elevators, trains with sliding doors, buses, etc... Raeg is appropriate.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's Raeg?

[–]ldd- 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think there may be a misunderstanding . . .

Of course, while exiting the train/elevator/other vehicle., the right-of-way is always to the person exiting.

However, the scenario involved is different. This is not for entry/exit for the train. This is for entry/exit from the platform. Generally, I still agree that right-of-way should go to the person exiting. However, if there is an expectation that the person entering will miss the train as a result of being slowed by the person exiting, the person entering should have preference.

The logic is this: To the person exiting, the cost of stepping aside will be 2 seconds. To the person entering, the cost of stepping aside will be the time until the next train comes - definitely more than 2 seconds. Providing preference for the person entering is a net positive.

If there is no risk of missing the train, it's 2 seconds in either case, and right-of-way goes to the person exiting.

[–]ChaosMotor 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whether or not someone misses the train is

  • Not something I could know - I have no knowledge of their intentions or destination
  • Not my problem - leaving on time is their responsibility, not mine, and I don't appreciate being forced to make concessions for someone else's irresponsibility

Sorry, but it's rude to put your problems before mine, when I'm not responsible for your problems. I stand by my previous comment.

Also consider, did she indicate any attempt to communicate with this gentleman, or did she just rudely shove her way past without even looking him in the face? I might give more leeway to someone respectful enough to at least look me in the face as they brusquely shove me out of the way.

[–]mountainbop 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you live in NYC? If not, I have to say that ldd- has very good points. If you do, good on you for sticking to what is technically right but the rules can bend in my opinion and I agree with ldd-. I ask if you live there because having the appropriate experience can really give you a clearer perspective as to what goes on than thinking it's solely a black and white issue.

Not something I could know - I have no knowledge of their intentions or destination

It's very obvious that a subway train is coming into the station by noise, feeling the wind blow by from the train's speed, or seeing it come through. You will have knowledge that the train is coming and the point ldd- is making is that you generally safe to assume that if someone is rushing in before you get to exit, it's because that train that is wooshing by is the one they are getting on.

Not my problem - leaving on time is their responsibility, not mine, and I don't appreciate being forced to make concessions for someone else's irresponsibility

This one is tougher, as you are absolutely right. Personally speaking though, I have generally subscribed to this unspoken rule (at least for me it's a rule and it seems it's ldd-'s as well) that I can relate and understand why a person would be rushing in to catch a train that just arrived and doesn't want or perhaps cannot afford to wait for the next one so letting them by is not such a big deal. That being said, I have had a couple instances where I've been pushed out of the way like this guy and I judge it by context - if train is coming, ok. If not, fuck you.

Now as for the woman in this video, she looks like a total bitch. She did not appear to be in any immediate hurry.

[–]ldd- 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, this is the reason why I said more context is necessary . . . in many cases, it is very possible to know if you will be causing her to miss the train.

In many cases, "leaving on time" is irrelevant. Many mass transit systems do not have posted schedules that are reliable.

I'm simply pointing out nuance in the case that could put him as the asshole. It is stuff that you notice when you take mass transit in major metro areas on a regular basis.

[–]Mr_Blackinson 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not as if he got in the turnstile after her. He was there first. Moreover, it is customary to stay on your right much like driving.

Been a while since I've been on the NY subway.. why are turnstiles necessary for people that are exiting? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a dedicated exit without a turnstile?

[–]g33n 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're not strictly necessary, and they're cheaper than retrofitting all the stations completely. There are dedicated exits that look like they were welded sometime around the first world war, but it turns out when you can't have bi-directional flow on a system like New York's, people get really jammed up, worse than the situation shown. A train will drop 500 people at 34th St and they'll all try to get to the exits at once, and the rest of the time you need as much surface area as possible to get people in (because getting in takes ~4-5x longer than getting out).

[–]MKQ 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that you are right. However, context aside, if you watch the video...it really does look like she didn't see him before she put her fare in. As a fellow New Yorker, I would agree with you that there is an etiquette that requires the person exiting the station/platform to defer to the person entering/catching a train. While the etiquette for the train is let people off and then enter the train. That being said, even if she was a jerk (which I don't think she was...I sincerely think that she was there first, and while putting her fare in he approached and slightly beat her to the turnstile) it does not justify violence. And that's what he just did...he assaulted her. So, in my book, she might be inconsiderate, but he's the asshole.

[–]hawtsauze 7 points8 points ago

What is wrong with you? That's not what i said. Try this, go to a mall and watch a hot young lady for a while, then a fat woman. Do you notice any difference in people's reaction to them, especially in the courtesy and politeness department?

Besides, there is not enough context to determine who was in the wrong here. All wrongdoers deserve to be tripped over - if they are fat they just punish themselves because they can't react in time and it hurts more.
