What happens when the tide is out?

I wondered this also. That water's not that deep--when the tide's out, the zombies would surely get in.

How would they get over the massive wall ? In most movies simple blockades and even chain link or glass doors keep zombies out.

Very true, but if all you're looking for is a walled city, there are plenty more than just this one tiny one (which, not being a proper city at all, probably has fewer resources). I like St. Malo, myself.

Actually, the whole surrounding area is pretty much turned to quick-sand when the tide is out, so it would still be relatively safe.

no, the ground is firm enough to walk on. I've walked around there myself

I've been there, I remember I walked there when the tide was out and spent to long in a bar and may have got a little squiffy so I had to take a boat back with everyone else from the bar, it was the most raucous boat ride of all time.

If I remember correctly its Mont St Michel near the north west of France. Probably one of the most picturesque and surreal places I have been after Suomenlinaa in Finland.

Meh, it's no Alcatraz. Plus, Alcatraz is built to house people. Wikipedia puts the number of people at Mont Saint-Michel in 2006 as 41 and Alcatraz's capacity at 312.

[–]joeanon 1 point2 points ago

Yea but an ideal base would be one with less people and lots of food. 41 is plenty of people as long as 21 of them are female :P or 40

I don't think there's anything even remotely, zombie safe, anymore. The way the zombie profile has morphed over the years I think now they can: drive tanks; fly F-22 Raptors; and spray you with fire from laser cannons they built in the garage, as they water ski behind the speed boats they're driving.

Well thats because zombies are too dumb to actually pose a real threat and eventually film makers realized that.

I mean a modern army would just mow down a million zombies a day and have fun doing it. Plus they are so dumb they come to you.. it's not like fighting an insurgency. A couple guys with a shitload of ammo and machine gun nests would be mowing them down faster than they could ever come at them and that's just a simple machine gun. I want to see a zombie take out a tank.

You figure one guy 8 hours with military grade weapons could kill 1000 zombies a day if he finds a steady stream of them. 10,000 guys could kill 10 million in day at that rate. Now of course you have to find them and all that but 10,000 is a pretty small army.

Unless all the US military bases were compromises it would only take a handful of trained soldiers to methodically wipe out a zombie infection. For that matter you could make the zombie traps where they'd just basically walk into commercial grinding machines and have like some guys on the other side of drop off playing poker. They just are too dumb to be formidable even the fast ones would be easy to kill.

If one zombie gets in there, just one, you're all fucked.

And what if the zombie infection starts in that strong hold, but the destroy the bridge? Or block it?

Sure, if you have enough advance notice, and cut off all access, you can last as long as the food does, but caught off guard? That place will be your death.

You kill the zombie infected people and return to castle life. They are fucking zombies.. it's not like the movies. If some guy mysteriously dies you fucking bash his head in to be sure. You don't sit around waiting to see if they rise again.

Consider that zombies come to you, they don't wait in the shadows planning an ambush. You stay together in groups and if some zombie attacks you kill it and whoever it bites. In most movies they are so stupid they can't even climb a fence. Playing video games would provide more a challenge then killing zombies.

What you'd need to worry about though, is when survivors inevitably show up at your door, begging to be let in. As the hero, you can't possibly let women and children be massacred, if you can help it. Or maybe when you go out on raids for food, someone is scraped or bitten. They hide the wound out of fear. Either way, the infection creeps in. The bridge is cut off. At least half of your survivor population is turned. Or maybe a bird or something could bring it in.

[–]sil0-aus 5 points6 points ago

simple, build a 2nd wall where the bridge meets land, women and children aren't your problem if you can see or hear them

Hell yeah you can, if they're possibly infected. Every man for himself!

As I recall from World War Z, you basically have to deny all access to any survivors wanting in a fortified base, no matter who they are. The places that didn't, or were overrun not by zombies, but by other survivors, were the ones that didn't succeed. There was also a boat or something with all the famous celebrities that got together trying to survive...I don't think they made it.

[–]neotropic9 0 points1 point ago

Holding cells for survivors. Leave them in cells for the period that it takes to turn + one day.

Inspect all people who enter the building... a few basic protocols would eliminate most of those movie scenarios.

Plus you are forgetting one major detail. In the movies people get sick and die.. at that point you have a pretty good hint they could be about to turn into zombies. So a new rule is when someone dies you bash their head in .. just to be sure. That and lock your doors at night and carry a gun.

Your biggest threat wouldn't be zombies it would be the people you are living with.

That is REALLY good... Just barricade up that one road, put some snipers up in that tower, and you're set!

[–]Guard01 0 points1 point ago

Eventually, the snipers will get tired and the zombies will bumrush you.

And do what? Stand at the wall and ask to come in? Build a ladder ?

They are zombies, they can't even get through a decent fence or glass door in most movies no less a 30 foot stone wall.

Blockade the entrance and use a boat... zombies can't swim.

Hmm what they said about the water is a big concern, but even if the tides were low and the zombies could walk on the sand, they still could only towards you from the land, which still allows for an easier defense. So basically just train people to focus on certain directions and you should be OK.

As for the allowing survivors in, I would impose a very strict strip search on everyone. Yes people would be outraged, but once I found the first person who lied and had been bitten people would praise me for my rule as I just saved everyone.

[–]joeanon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see what the concern is or the need for defense.. they aren't spiderman zombies they can't scale a 20-30 foot wall. They'll just stand there and drool.

If anything the only reason to kill them would be for fun or to end the annoying mmmm brains noises they make.

Lets face it... zombies really aren't smart enough to pose that much of a risk. For the most part a door keeps them out.

[–]whoneedsmeme 0 points1 point ago

That's an awful base, one infection and it's over the barrel city.

[–]joeanon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can't that be said for just about any base ? I've never seen zombies swim and since they don't breathe they should not be able to. They probably have boats there somewhere and you can retreat to the castle as well

It's a pretty solid base IF you can fish the waters or have huge food stores and relatively low amounts of people.. otherwise it's just way too big to maintain.

I still say a sailboat is the way to go.

where is this?

[–]greyishpoweranger -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ok: Food. Not much land to grow food on in that place, and do you really think your going to WALK/sail 100's of miles when every place near by is picked clean? Also WATER! what are you going to do about that? Pureifie the water? with what, you have no power to run a huge water purifier, and there is no why that water is safe to drink. At best this would be a good place to go with you already have 10 years worth of food and water on you.

[–]DrPhishify 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

calm down junior, first off their is ample space to grow various plants and not to mention we have the technology to grow plants underground, food would not be a problem. As for water, generators and sonar panel technology (assuming you have time to transport these materials onto the island) would create enough energy to run a purifier enough for 20-30 people, also rain could be a probable source of water considering it rains there a lot. If we can safely say that zombies will not mutate past their normal human characteristics then this location would be almost perfect. Their really is only one entrance, which is a long straight road perfect for snipers. The water ensures being surrounded and the high towers give excellent vision to incoming zombies and any rescue helicopters. Good evening sir

If I ever become a multi-billionaire, I'm going to build a self-sufficient zombie-proof island fortress. You sir, are hereby invited to reside within said fortress.
