The Korean in the upper left hand corner literally means "Animal Farm".

After watching the video: They claim that they're trying to train the bear to be more sociable by getting him to interact with other animals and make friends, but he obviously needs more training. Also, they kind of make fun of him for being a pussy.

They aren't. You can tell by the lion cub's reactions that he doesn't want to be by the bear either, but the people keep forcing him right next to the bear so he freaks out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_therapy Perhaps this is the idea being put into practice here...?

[–]Furfire 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What they are doing is the equivalent of throwing spiders on an arachnophobic individual and laughing. If they really wanted to get him used to it, it would be gradual, not forcing them into touching distance upon the first encounter.

[–]EvilFlyingSquirrel 1 point2 points ago

Maury Povich used to do that all the time. Are you saying Daytime TV can be wrong?! Are You!? Thought so.

[–]MasturGrate 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exposure therapy can be gradual or it can be in a single session called flooding. In the case of a single session it involves teaching phobics relaxation techniques and then just exposing them to the stimuli. However, there is graded exposure that you are talking about but it is done less frequently than flooding.

I think a lot of the lions' behavior is a reaction to the bear. Initially they're more curious, but when he starts flipping out they're a little less interested in being close to him.

The training to make it more sociable makes sense. I don't know why people are complaining. Being that scared of everything is not normal for a bear. So what if they are taping it and making fun of it. It's not like the bear is going to be offended or have its self-esteem hurt.

[–]ActuallyAPolarBear 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And what do you know of bear self-esteem? Have you ever had your food curse you to your face? Have you ever slipped off an iceberg just to have a bunch of whale-loving hippies laugh at you? Do you even know what total douchebags squirrels are? They are douchebags. Total fucking douchebags. You humans; all that brains and yet your world view is so narrow.

[–]2012ad 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being that scared of everything is not normal for a bear.

Yeah, being scared of an apex predator is really odd for a baby animal who's been raised in captivity and not taught to fend for itself.

Point is, both of these animals are terrified and they're exploiting them to make money, whatever the ostensible reason is.

[–]greencandy 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, having seen this program before, it's more about raising awareness about animals, sort of pseudo-documentary style where people can fawn over how cute they are.

Maybe being scared of the lion cub is 'normal', but what about the monkey? Watching the video, I find it hard to deny this bear has some problems.

[–]NotSoFatThrowAway 6 points7 points ago

WHO WOULDNT BE AFRAID OF A MONKEY I MEAN COME ON ITS A FUCKING MONKEY

[–]2012ad 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The laugh track makes it seem a little bit questionable as a documentary program, and the park it's filmed at is definitely guilty of mistreating animals.

As for the primate, after being chucked in a room full of lions, I'd probably be scared shitless of whatever that lady introduced to me. Seems to me like all they're doing is conditioning that bear to be afraid of everything.

[–]akumadiavolo 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A: The "apex Predator" is also a baby. Most baby animals are not that afraid of other baby animals, they have no idea that they should be feared, it's not like it knows that that is a lion and an apex predator. Seriously, that is a stupid thing to say. The Bear is also an apex predator BTW, but the lion is clearly not afraid of it.

B: The lion is not afraid, he might be slightly nervous, but far from terrified.

C: They were not exploiting them to make money, they were trying to socialize them. That is how you socialize an animal, but putting it with other animals. And this was filmed, but it was not open to the public. How would they make money off of it? Don't go on about how the video was sold or something it was filmed by their version of PBS, no money involved.

[–]2012ad 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A) Baby animals have natural instincts that cause them to fear things that are bigger and more threatening. Of course it doesn't know it's a lion. Black bears in their natural habitat are just about as far as you can get from the Serengeti. However, before this scene was shot, the bear was held up to a window in front of two lion cubs, which both swiped at the bear and showed their teeth. He saw enough to know to be afraid. And bears are only apex predators within their own regions. Pit one against a lion or a tiger and I bet the cat would win out.

[ETA: Turns out black bears aren't even apex predators in their natural range: "Despite the black bear being more powerful on a one to one basis, packs of wolves have been recorded to kill black bears on numerous occasions without eating them. Unlike brown bears, black bears frequently lose against wolves in disputes over kills.[59] Wolf packs are known to kill black bears during their hibernation cycle.[33]" (Via Wikipedia.)]

B) That lion is showing classic cat posturing that demonstrates a fear response: crouching low, ears back, tail tucked. Actually, it seems far more terrified of the handler than the bear, which makes me wonder what else has been done to it.

C) Everland Park, where this was filmed, is Korea's largest theme park. They are not a nonprofit organization. Therefore, the care and keeping of these animals is solely for the purpose of monetary gain, and anything they do with these animals can be considered exploitative. They breed white tigers and ligers, which are both abominable practices, and they house their tigers with lions. The cats have been caught on film, fighting and injuring one another, and then park did not intervene to separate them. They clearly do not give two shits about these animals.

By the way, if you're going to "socialize" any wild animal in any kind of meaningful way, you do it with members of its own species, not with something that has demonstrated a desire to act aggressively toward the animal.

[–]kingcal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Living in Korea, I can definitely tell you that human consideration for animal life is much lower on the ladder of priorities than Western nations. They don't teach kids the same kind of sanctity of life that we get. They can be incredibly rough when playing with animals and generally do shit that the animals don't enjoy, but I wouldn't say that they do it to be purposefully malicious. They just don't really consider how an animal may feel about something most of the time.

[–]Volsunga 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the lions and the monkeys were not frightened until the bear started screaming, they were curious as all baby predators should be (including the bear). Unless you're arguing that no animals should ever be kept in captivity for any reason, I don't see how any of that makes a difference to the matter at hand.

[–]2012ad 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm arguing that reputable, responsible animal care facilities don't shove together two animals which have no business together in the same room and film the ensuing terror for public entertainment.

ETA: For the record, I'm not a fan of animals being kept in captivity outside of conservatory efforts and sanctuaries to house animals formerly used in entertainment industries.

[–]garlicking 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to this article, the bear was born in captivity to Princess (23 Y/O) and Honesty (17Y/O). The keepers had decided that it would be best for the mother to raise the cub so it would be better socialized, however, the mother would not feed the cub. After two days, they decided it would be best to have the cub hand raised. At first the cub was weak and showed nervous habits such as chewing up his feet and chewing on his "foster mom" Kim, but he has since gotten stronger and will run up to greet his "foster mom."

I don't think they are terrifying the bear just for the hell of it. He does seem overly anxious, perhaps as a result of being separated from its mom so early, but that couldn't really be helped. Also, it seems a lot more likely to me that they legitimately want the bear to learn to feel comfortable with other animals, so when they reintroduce him to the bear habitat (I'm assuming he's going to be kept in captivity for a while as he doesn't seem a good candidate for reintroduction), he wont get owned by the other bears. I mean, they can't keep him in the nursery forever, he's going to grow up.

Also, it seems a lot more likely to me that they legitimately want the bear to learn to feel comfortable with other animals

Again, though, why with other species? More importantly, why with other predatory animals who are already large enough to maul him, which that zookeeper would have been totally unable to stop? That is what does not make sense. Socializing I can understand, but with lions? Sorry, that sounds like bullshit to me.

[–]garlicking 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Over the course of the video he was with two lions, a monkey, and a fawn. So I'm assuming that they were socializing him with the baby animals they had. It's not like they happen to have a few bear cubs lying around to use, and it would have been a bad idea to toss him in with the adult bears or most other adult animals that tend to be less playful and more territorial.

[–]2012ad 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reverse socialization of wild animals is usually done entirely by humans--with the exception of certain situations where there are members of the same species to help--until the animal is ready to return to its captive or natural habitat. You'd never see someone in a reputable wildlife rehab center doing it this way. Those lions could have seriously hurt that bear, and he was right to be afraid. This is only going to condition him to be more fearful, not make him better.

[–]Jaquestrap 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the point. It's a baby animal that's been raised in captivity and hasn't been taught to fend for itself. So they're exposing it to "potential threats" so that it can learn to react how a wild bear would to such stimuli. Otherwise attempting to reintroduce the bear into the wild would result in it not surviving a year.

[–]2012ad 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's not intended to return to the wild. He lives in a theme park. He'll eventually be returned to the bear habitat, but he doesn't really have any predators to watch out for, so there's no reason to make him stand up to other animals that are much larger and more capable than he is at this age and state of development.

If he were returning to the wild, though, this is also not how socialization in wild animals is handled, either. See my comments above.

If a child is afraid of the dark do you let them sleep with the lights on for the rest of their life? You have to face your fears, rational or not, eventually.

[–]robin_david 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Being scared is how an animal survives in the wild. Intense fear is a daily part of every wild animal's life. Even domesticated animals have heightened fight or flight responses compared to most humans who can control their fear to a greater degree. This bear is reacting to stimuli in the way that his body was designed.

How about, instead of thinking about this one poor frightened bear, you think about the countless wild bears and other animals that are killed or starved or frightened out of their habitat by the society that we live in and support.

Every one of us has directly contributed to the destruction and suffering of many animals. To get so offended from this video, to me, conveys a huge ignorance of the scale of animal life destroyed by human civilization. And you and everyone else who sees a video like this gets up in arms when really there's nothing in this video that is particularly cruel.

[–]MetalMrHat 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't see a difference between "causing unneccesary stress for no reason other than humour" and accidental suffering. It's one thing for suffering to happen in the wild, but I struggle to imagine why anyone would do it on purpose.

[–]robin_david 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course there's a difference. Have you not seen those reality shows that intentionally try to scare the shit out of people and capture their reactions on camera? How is that different?

And there is nothing "accidental" about leveling a forest and putting a strip mall on top of it.

[–]KingofCraigland 0 points1 point ago

[–]akumadiavolo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The cub has no idea it's a predator, it has no instincts for it because they would never meet in nature. They are both bad-add predators anyway, and both cubs. No reason for fear like that.

i don't know if its cruelty to scare a bear like this, if its not actually in danger. like, scaring the shit out of a kid with a scary mask is cruel to a certain extent, but its also a funny cruel. i mean, keep it in perspective. i've seen videos where the Chinese are draining a bear of all its bile while its still alive. now THAT was fucked. if this was all they did to bears, i'd be happy. sad to say, it gets WAY more fucked than this.

So here's my take. I don't think the intention was to freak the little guy out, but really to make him less "pussy" if you will. However, I think the care taker should've provided more comfort and support, especially witnessing the cub freaking out its brain.

I am not familiar with bears, but the little guy looks way too young to be separated from its parent. And the fact the care taker doesn't comfort/console it, that really pisses me off.

[–]matttebbetts 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow this should be in /r/WTF not /r/funny - there's nothing funny about it. This is straight up animal cruelty. Or just cruelty in general. Awful, awful stuff. Shame on you for thinking this is funny at all.

(Well, the GIF doesn't show the full story, so I suppose to some it will be funny... but after watching the real video this is just terrible.)

[–]thisisj3w -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Explain? What are they doing that is cruel?

[–]kihba 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Let say you have a fear spiders. Exposure therapy calls for you to be incrementally exposed to spiders over a period of time.

So first look at pictures, then after your ok with that look at them through glass windows, and then finally have them climb on your hands or what not.

If you had a fear of spiders and the first thing I did was to throw you into a cage full of them that would be cruel and a great way to make your phobia worse rather than better.

That cub might not actually be 'scared' but trying to stand up as it would if it were an adult to make itself look bigger as a defence mechanism ..and so it can swipe at a predator with its claws.

I'm not seeing the funniness... :/ If you want the video it isn't hillarious. These zoo trainers are putting this poor bear in front of predators that are older than him (granted he was protected by glass) so naturally the bear become skittish. Of course he jumps at everything. They've trained him to be afraid of his own shadow. It's disgusting.

[–]jnjs 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aren't they trying to train him OUT of being afraid of his own shadow?

If they were training him to be afraid of the other animals, the video would be of them making other animals attack him.

[–]akumadiavolo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The bear(another apex predator) has no idea that the lion is a predator. They never meet in nature and have no instincts one way or another towards each other.
