Ahh that brings me back to the fractint days

Not only could you generate this picture, you could zoom in on any area with infinite detail.

When you got bored of zooming, you could rotate the color palette.

Custom palettes would make for a pretty 'animated' fractal.

Fun times.

I learned C (had been doing everything in assembler) just to get a floating-point library for doing Mandelbrot sets on my old Sperry PC. An 8087 math coprocessor was too expensive. Took over a day to do a 640x400x16 image. Started writing some fixed-point math routines, then I found Fractint - wrote a quick driver for the high-res Sperry graphics adapter (two full-length boards with a wide jumper cable), and the identical images would take only 8 minutes. Utterly fantastic.

i am pretty sure fractint is even semi updated since I used it. I think I looked at it about 4 years ago, and there were still people quite interested in it.

It doesn't surprise me.

I felt the same way about the math co's. I always wanted one, but ended up waiting until the 486 I eventually got had one built in.

Let me tell you, a 486-dx2 66 with 4 megs of ram was a monster machine back when I had it!

My least favourite in-the-past graphics experience was with ray tracing without a math co. It would take 48 hours for some of the models I made, and I was trying to do 30 second animations... At one frame every two days, I had a LOT of respect for people who had made animations on the 'big' computers of the day.

This is the cover of the Information Theory book used by an MIT course. It's an interesting image because most compression algorithms do very horribly with this image, often "compressing" it to larger than it was before, despite it containing almost no information (it's governed by just a few simple rules).

Really? I would expect run-length encoding to be able to compress this, and I can't imagine a lossless image format doing worse than RLE.
