Are you sure that's not a jaguar? The pattern of the spots seems to fit those of a jaguar better than a leopard. Also jaguars are a lot more well-known for their mellanistic populations than leopards.

I've been around quite a few big cats and I'm fairly sure it is a jaguar (from the broader, fuller skull shape and floret spot pattern). Not sure why the coloring is so odd though; spots ARE visible to an extent in melanistic animals, but this here could be photo-trickery. If a melanistic cat mates with a non-melanistic one it produces one or the other, not a mix.

Would that be possible? Google yields no answers. I know tigers and lions are able to produce either Ligers or Tiglons, depending on the male/female combination, but panthers and jaguars? Could they breed? I'm very fascinated by these hybrid species!

"Panthers" are, generally speaking, mellanistic (think opposite of albino) mountain lions or jaguars, and they can readily interbreed, as far as I know, although their offspring will not be fertile.

I think that there's definitely some photo-trickery at work here (whether it be intentional or not). If the light shines just right on a "black panther" you can almost always see spots to an extent, though this picture is definitely out of the ordinary in how readily-seen the spots are.

Jaguar spots are (in my definitely non-expert experience) varied a lot depending on the geographic location. The further north they're found, the less-spotted their coats will appear, and vice versa.

It's a jaguar. Aside from what you rightly mention, it does not look like a leopard at all and is far more muscular. Once you've seen enough of them, the difference is frankly obvious, which is just to say that there is no debate; that's a motherfucking jaguar.

I'll even go so far as to place him and say that since black-phase (and especially large) jaguars are common in the Rio Tambopato-Candamo Reserved Zone (ZRTC) on the border of Peru and Bolivia, this may well be one of them.

In parts of South America "black" jaguars are not uncommon, per se. I'm thinking specifically of the Zona Reservada Tambopata-Candamo on the border of Amazonian Peru and Bolivia. They are also known for unusual size, but despite my username, I'm not an expert and am basically reporting local folk knowledge.

The primary difference (besides size in most) is the state of the hyoid bone in the throat. In big cats, it is cartilaginous allowing them to roar while in small cats it is solid bone, which they can use to purr. The two vocalizations are mutually exclusive between the two. The largest small cat is the puma.

Not all big cats like water though. The tiger and jaguar love it, but the lion, leopard and snow leopard won't generally be seen taking a dip.

It would probably be different in motivation rather than location. Cats that purr tend to hiss to express aggression rather than roar (they also fold their ears back against their head to more resemble snakes). You work with what you've got. Roars are scarier than hissing (the difference being predator and dangerous prey) so big cats would probably express pleasure or contentment in an entirely different way.

You wouldn't see him in the jungle. He would either see you and do nothing and you'd never see him, or you'd catch a faint glimpse of him as he disappeared, or you'd be dead. The first two options are far more likely though. I know this from personal experience.

It's 100% a jaguar. You can tell from it's stocky build, leopards are much more slender. (I'm giving a presentation on jaguars on Monday, I'm balls deep in this species at the moment, I promise).

Also, you can call it a "black panther" I suppose because leopards and jaguars are both in the genus Panthera, so technically it's correct saying it's a black panther in the common sense of things, but if you want to be correct with the nomenclature, it's a jaguar (Panthera onca, not sure of the subspecies though).
