Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

18000 thousand? That's almost twenty million people! Doesn't look that much in the picture though.

i really doubt its 18000. there are less than 20 dudes at the very bottom in the first row.

[–]goldragon 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And there are many, many more men in each row the further away you get from the foreground. It's like those sidewalk chalk drawings that look 3D if viewed from the right spot. Compare this view to the wrong view. The torch probably has more men than the rest of the statue combined.

Something looks off about the perspective to me. Amazing sight though. Where did you find it?

[–]Brunopolis 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's probably pretty hard to coordinate a shape like that. Especially in the early 1900's. It's not like planes and overhead shots were that common. 8P

[–]mdohrn 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The major difference was possible elevation for the photographer/camera. Whereas high-zoom aerial shots are now possible to do this, the photographer was certainly no more than a couple stories up off the ground.

I thought shenanigans were in play when I saw how close the first few soldiers are and how few were in the row, and it occurred to me that this image would look truly bizarre from above and nothing at all like the Statue of Liberty, as the perspective is built into the arrangement of people. The torch is massive relative to any part below it in sheer number of soldiers in it.

[–]basementdwellr 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually live about five minutes from Camp Dodge. There is a very high hill that overlooks Camp Dodge that is probably where the photo was taken from.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless your "very high hill" results in a sheer cliff face for the photographer to stand on, not likely.

[–]vlf_fata 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah since telephoto lenses weren't around back then, right?

Most likely the lens they were using had a far greater focal length than any point and shoot you have.

[–]intisun 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Telephoto lenses flatten the perspective; this picture was obviously not taken with a telephoto but with a wider lens.

I'd say it was taken from a watchtower or a crane, and the front soldiers are probably only a dozen metres away from its base.

the brains familiarity with the pixel size and density identifying distance doesn't help things. Squinting improves it, although she does look a bit fat.

[–]mirchman 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its probably just that the arm, torch and flame are a bit too long.

Since the camera shot isn't totally overhead (its shot from an angle) things closest to the camera appear as long as they should, and things further away from the camera appear shorter -- so the person coordinating this was probably trying to keep that in mind and made the arm, torch and flame longer than you actually should and ended up not having the correct size. Thats just my theory anyways.

[–]neighborcat1-scratch 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I see what you mean about the distortion. I'm suspecting lens aberration. Consider the included angle and depth of field, literally.

[–]RedditorZero 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It looks like it's taken on a big hill leading down into a field. About halfway up the formation there's a change in lighting on the ground that shows where the bottom of the hill appears to be.

[–]Dawggoneit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The perspective is a bit off, but damn did they do a good job of getting it as right as they did!

If you looked at that crowd of people from anywhere other than where the camera was positioned, it would look nothing like the Statue of Liberty so it must have been exceedingly difficult to get everyone in the correct position, wearing the correct colored clothing, and keeping the correct crowd density as it stretched back. All before computers and calculators. These guys had to break out graph paper for goodness sake!

[–]bjoernlars 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I figure out why I am bothered by the perspective. Looking at this picture, the majority of the soldiers seem to be in the torch. Someone with a great sense of perspective could have coordinated this, but I have doubts.

What really bothers me is that in the background, you can see cars and what I believe are 1 to 3 story buildings. Why are the soldiers back there microscopic and not in proportion to the adjacent buildings?

I'm no expert, but maybe I'm missing something.

[–]slkjfdhsd -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i call shennanigans...

the formations do seem to try to correct perspective and distance deformation (needing 4 men in the front but 20 in the back rows for the same "width") but it somehow looks weird...

[–]Dopplegangr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not to say it was done on this photo, but photo editing was done before digital (Photoshop).

The perspective does seem odd, I feel like the people in front should be seen from a much higher angle, but they are almost straight on. I'm no photo expert, but maybe this could be done with a really long lens? No idea what kind of equipment they had available then.

Reminds me of the formation parades in Catch 22.

Edit: For those who haven't read it, on Sundays they line up in full uniform in sweltering heat and stand at attention until they meet the required quota of men collapsing from heat exhaustion for the parade to be canceled.

When notre dame was sacked and ripped apart, someone put a prostitute on the altar. They tore down a curtain and wrapped it around her shoulders, crowned her the goddess of wisdom, and put a torch in her hand (to symbolize the light of lucifer)

That's the statue of liberty

[–]BeepbeepJeep1 1 point2 points ago*

This was taken in the summer, and back in those days the uniforms were made of wool. A bunch of guys actually passed out due to heat exhaustion because it took hours and hours to arrange the men. Imagine just standing there for 9 hours straight in 100 degree heat with a full wool uniform....people were made of stronger stuff back then

I was based at Camp Dodge in Iowa as a member of the Iowa National Guard and a new-recruit instructor for several years. An original copy of this photo is in our museum on Camp Dodge. Do you re-read books? Listen to songs more than once? Have a favorite joke you tell? Ever get the same dish twice at a restaurant? Ever recommend the same movie to more than one friend? Do you only have one-night-stands? Ever watch a re-run on TV? How often do you look up at the moon? It's exactly the same as it was last time you looked. That's why.

After taking perspective into account, you are probably right. For a more modern reference, the photo would most likely work the same way the perspective in sidewalk art does.

Easiest example to see is here. That would mean that the statue of liberty is most likely somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/2-1/2 mile long in the photo.
