Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

There's got to be more to this story. The Swedes were surely familiar with dogs, cats, wolves, and wild cats like lynx. All meat eaters have pointy teeth. For some reason this has cartoon horse teeth. It doesn't seem likely this was done purely out of ignorance, the swedish coat of arms has had lions on it for centuries but I don't know if they actually had cats bigger than lynx there. Perhaps there was something political involved, I know at least one king in the late 1500s was called "the lion of the north'. Making a mockery of this lion maybe had more meaning? Or maybe the taxidermist just liked clowns.

[–]Icreatedyou 42 points43 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm good at being an apologist. here goes nothing.

A talented Swedish taxidermist operating in the city of Swedenville receives a commission from a wealthy hunter. The hunter brings to him a lions pelt, but with the requirement that he make it not appear scary or vicious in any way. He wants the taxidermist to make it kind of goofy looking so that his children don't get nightmares. His kids may have been frightened in the past by his other trophies and his wife may have forced him to get rid of them or store them in the attic.

I can think of a few other scenarios as well :P

[–]sje46 43 points44 points ago

No idea. Europeans seem to have weird tastes in entertainment. Fuckin Punch and Judy, Noddy, Teletubbies, Charlie and Lola. Those things and others that I can't recall at the moment all have freaked me the eff out :P

Notice the use of very simple but memorable music, music and simple narration is the key to the appeal of these shows. The best kids TV shows keyed into basic yet complex music, music that programs the kids brain.

They had some very clever child psychologists working on or for these shows, by accident or design. Theres tradition and anarchy mixed in these shows, things change but when people want them to change.

The Teletubbies was the modern equivalent of the older shows, and why they appeal (even just for giggles) to adults who grew up on the earlier ones.

The whole vibe of the show is like a bad salvia trip. It reminds me of the slowed down pizza song by the Olsen Twins.

If you slowed down a charlie and Lola episode, I would vacate the plane of reality and Beelzebub will drag me into his puzzle box. Again.

Judging from ChemShot's supplemental photo, I think that your gut feeling (about it looking like a heraldic lion) might be right, and the taxidermist is sort of trying to recreate a lion passant. It certainly explains the creepy tongue, and would very likely explain the goofy teeth.

They are made out of wood and it still looks stupid, but the lion has pointy teeth. Velociraptors were actually slow-moving scavengers.

[–]Urusai89 46 points47 points ago

and they were about 2-3 feet tall, covered in feathers. Not the large predators shown in Jurassic Park.

[–]Aymicabeza 48 points49 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those were actually closer to Dynonichus, a predecessor to Velociraptor who was a fucking BOSS. Nobody pays attention to him though because Velociraptors had better PR, the feathery faggots.

[–]daftmetal 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually they were accidentally modeled after the Utahraptor. Spielberg wanted a larger, faster raptor and so he made one up. The Utahraptor was discovered while they were planning Jurassic Park and just happened to be the same size as the ones from the movie. They just kept the name Velociraptor because it was a more popular dinosaur than the Utahraptor. And also because it's a movie and they tend not to care whether or not they are accurate.

People on reddit complain about this all the time, but you try inventing forensic anthropology, and you're not a scientist, but an artist, and you can't see more than 3 feet in front of you because you're legally blind. Charles Knight was an amazing person, and the things he did for science shouldn't be discredited just because the information was later updated. (He also invented the museum display of bones. Before that the bones were in boxes in basements, never to be seen by the public.)

I like to pretend that the taxidermist got it totally right, and that this lion was the leonine-equivalent of a 35 year old guy named Rory who lives in his parents' basement. He has strong opinions on men's rights and he wears a fedora everywhere.

[–]joezuntz 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a stuffed walrus in the Horniman Museum in south London.

Its skin was brought to the country before people knew what they looked like. In particular the taxidermist didn't know that walruses have very floppy, folded skin, so he stuffed it till it was taut.

It's huge. A monumental walrus.

With teeth like that? The taxidermist knew what lions look like and he also knew that King Fredrik didn't have a clue. First class medieval trollage, I say.

I'm a lion and I can confirm this is accurate.

I guess not, but I still think he did a pretty good job given the limitations. Just the teeth are rather ridiculous.

that's the most epic face someone would ever see in a stuffed animal! I mean look at those crazy eyes, lickitongue and those amazingly denture-like fangs!

His tongue looks like a delicious london broil. I'd love to throw it in the crock pot with some 18th century carrots and potatoes.

[–]Mister_Snrub 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not so bad from a different angle

I don't know what's up with the eyes, but I think they were going for effect with the teeth. It really does look like the lions in some crests when you see it from the side.

I have a rabbit in my museum sort of like this. Well, the difference is the guy had seen a rabbit, but tried to cut corners by stretching the skin over a wooden box. Now we have a square rabbit.

It looks like it was made by someone who longed to see a lion.

Perhaps because he'd only heard of it by rough description.

Are they sure they sent it to a taxidermist and not some guy who saw a taxidermist working before and he always wanted to be a taxidermist anyway so it can't be that difficult?
