Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Lightning, nature's path finding algorithm. Notice how it tries various paths until it finds one that connects to ground and then the full blast comes?

And thunder comes after ... wards, I don't want this weekend to end

serious question here: why isn't lightning a straight line?

[–]paulasaurus 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Electricity takes the path of least resistance, which is not necessarily the shortest path. Dust, water vapor, and other particles in the air cause the path to zigzag.

[–]C_IsForCookie 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

TIL. Thanks for the answer, I was curious myself. My dad is an electrical engineer but getting a straight answer out of him is like getting a straight man in a gay bar, or something like that...

Oh yeah. The guy is also a lawyer (No joke) so he's king of the over explaining and using of the words nobody else understands. He takes the scenic route in conversations.

Technician's mouth:- ask a tech what time it is and the will tell you how to build a watch, both analog and digital, pointing out the digital versions of the analog components. And if you are very lucky, he will remember to tell you the time.

I suffer from this too.

Might be a stupid question but why does an object make it easier than air for lightning to travel to the ground? wouldn't the object create resistance?

[–]paulasaurus 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way I understand it, the lightning is going around the objects

[–]memetichazard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I could be wrong, since I studied EE, not physics. However...
Lightning is the flow of electric charge across a large distance (cloud to ground or vice versa). Vacuum is the best resistor - electrons would require a lot of energy to be ejected from the atom that holds it. It is much easier when there are many atoms/molecules close by - think of it, for instance, as a series of gravity wells. When two molecules are closer, it is easier for the electrons to hop from one to the next.

The elements that compose these molecules also determines their conductivity (certain number of protons leads to configurations where the electron is more easily retained, or less easily retained). Air is a fairly good insulator. Note, however, that at very high temperatures, air becomes a good conductor.

I found a conductivity/resistivity table of Wikipedia.

[–]srs_house 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't really try multiple paths until it finds one, it just tries a bunch simultaneously, and uses the one that gets there first (if at all).

[–]haredond 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ahhhh.. the sweet smell of ozone

[–]atlaslugged 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, isn't that second bolt going up?

[–]darkbrethren 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not a second bolt, that is the bolt. The actual "lightning bolt" takes place when the charge connects with the ground, after which the bolt travels up. Thunder is the sound of the water molecules surrounding the charge and the bolt evaporating simultaneously.

[–]Thunder_Child 48 points49 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, thunder comes from the rapid expansion of the air in and surrounding the lightning channel due to rapid heating.

The plasma in the lightning channel is 30,000o C. Because the temperature increases from normal temperatures to this temperature very rapidly, the volume of the air must increase proportionally (remember PV=nRT, the ideal gas law). As this volume of air moves outward, it produces a wave, much like a rock in a pond. We perceive this wave in the air as sound. Because the temperature is so high and the increase is so rapid, the wave carries a lot of energy, which is why thunder is so loud.

EDIT: my username is totally coincidental

[–]darkbrethren 4 points5 points ago

[–]Thunder_Child 3 points4 points ago

I'm not sure a Nobel Prize is in order, but I'll take upvotes :P

[–]topazsparrow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was the rapid displacement of air due to the expansion and the subsequent collapse of said expansion.

[–]digitallimit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So lightning is actually a two-stage process, visually? All bolts are preceded by a sort of top-down pathfinding tree?

[–]darkbrethren 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just consider static electricity. You're not just sending off constant bolts of electricity, you have to come into proximity with a conductive surface that the charge can reach out to and make contact with before the bolt is released. Lightning is no different, it's just on a much larger scale.

[–]digitallimit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure, but I imagined that within a certain range, the bolts from static electricity would merely jump from whichever surface has a higher "potential" (a word I'm using in lieu of something specific).

In the case of static electricity, which side has the pathfinding bolts before the primary bolt is launched? I mean, I'm obviously thinking about this incorrectly, but I freely admit that I like most people don't really understand electricity despite having learned about it.

[–]atlaslugged 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not saying it's a second bolt in the sense of an independent occurrence, just distinguishing it from the initial cloud-to-ground fork.

My understanding is that lightning can go ground-cloud, cloud-ground, or cloud-cloud depending on the differences in charge. I was pointing out to BeGood that the lightning didn't wait for contact with the ground to send the "full blast;" it was going the other way.

[–]paulasaurus 0 points1 point ago

[–]slagahthor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't it seem like the full blast comes from the ground back up to the cloud? Am I nuts?

That's really awesome. Reminds me of this one time I was outside, taking a pee of course, on a stone platform just outside my porch, during a storm. Suddenly, I hear a giant crash along with a flash of blue. It turns out that lightning struck a tree probably 40-50 feet away from me. Part of the tree basically exploded sending pieces of bark showering down around me. It was pretty scary, haha. The cool thing is, the pieces of bark were extremely smooth on the inside where they broke away from the tree. I could get a picture of one if anyone cares to see it.

edit: Spelling. Also here are some pictures. Smooth side (it's a little bit less smooth than when it first happened but still cool. Side angle and another angle.

[–]rusyn 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I understand, when a tree is struck, the water inside is super-heated, so that the tree actually explodes from internal pressure produced by steam. Maybe that's why the inside of the bark is smooth.

[–]ricodued 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why doesn't this happen to humans?

[–]rusyn 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think since humans are mostly water, we conduct more easily to ground. The bark and cellulose of a tree make for a more rigid structure with less conductivity, so it doesn't ground as easily.

[–]ricodued 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ohh, interesting. Thanks. Have an upboat.

[–]idobi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would be wicked if people did explode from a lightning bolt, though.

[–]iangoround 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From what I remember from various classes and Discovery TV is that the electrical charge tends to travel along the OUTSIDE of the body. This is why some people survive lightning strikes with only minor burns.

[–]PaperChampion 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Makes sense to me. It was pretty cool though, because every piece was like that. They were everywhere too. It was pretty scary though, considering how close it was.

A big tree in my back yard was struck once. About eight feet off the ground there was a section where the bark had been blown off, and the wood underneath was very smooth like you describe. I think this has something to do with how the sap vaporizes, but I'm not totally sure.

Yup. Polite positive reinforcement for good posts could never add to the community!

[–]wendelgee2 -1 points0 points ago

Positive reinforcement is what that little UP arrow is for.

[–]propaglandist -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Upvoting carries with it minimal information: only a 'yes' or 'no.' While comments such as 'ya ur right' or 'This.' provide little additional useful reinforcement, I can't help but believe that a post such as FausterChild's adds to the discussion by helping us understand what, exactly, it is about a given post is valuable.
