Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Somehow, you've managed to both prove and disprove your comprehension of averages in the same paragraph... I don't even...what? :P All joking aside:

5/10 would be "average" on the scale being that it is the absolute median, but the averages of my ratings don't calculate to 5/10 because the distribution of ratings does not average to 5/10. The 0/10 is an outlier and in some cases can be excluded from the calculations depending on the nature of the study. I gave a score of 0/10 because that particular submission compares the cuteness of a ferret to that of a cat. This is like comparing apples to oranges, and on the apple scale, the orange gets a 0. It's only math, nothing to take personally.

My understanding was that things rated on a ten point scale should all average out to 5, the halfway point in between 1 and 10. Sort of like how IQs are set up so that 100 is always the average. I guess I was wrong; I've never taken a statistics class, if you couldn't tell already.

The median IQ is 100, the mean varies. The median is defined as the 50% point of the sample population, that is half of the samples are above and half are below. Depending on the skew of the samples, the mean does not have to (and in most real cases doesn't) equal the median.

It's easiest to get that average if the underlying distribution is symmetric about 5/10 (Normal, Uniform). The scale goes from 0 to 10 (presumably inclusive, I don't know if he's given a 10 before) but is not guaranteed to use that range in any particular manner. It merely guarantees that no cat will "crank it to 11".

Specifically, Depending on which set of verbage you'd like to use the average is the expectation of the random variable, which would be I_RATE_CATS's ratings. The expectation is the sum(rating_i * probability_i). In a uniform distribution each rating would have probability 1/11 and the expectation would be 5/10. Wiki will give you the equation to calculate the probability of each rating for a normal distribution, but in short you give the mean as a parameter so it is guaranteed to be 5/10.

Not going near the detail of other explanations - what if it was his first rating? Would that have to be 5/10? If it was 8/10, then it'd 'average out' to 8/10!

And for the second rating? If the first was 5/10, the second would have to be 5/10. If the first was 8/10 (which it can't be!) the second would have to be 2/10.

Here a tabby cat is laying on what appears to be a floral-patterned couch. It is laying on its back, belly exposed, with its head in the corner of the armrest and couch backing, giving it the appearance of a laid-back redneck watching 'the race' or perhaps your slightly narcoleptic uncle who smells vaguely of gym socks. A Heineken beer has been placed on his belly for added comic effect.

The cat yawns, and as his belly expands the the beer moves slightly with it. The feline's front right extremity stretches out in an almost "oh, you!" fashion, and the left front extremity twitches slightly.

The cat then resumes its nap, further reinforcing the lazy redneck, or narcoleptic uncle caricature previously mentioned.
