Each lane was likely laid as sheets and mated at a seam down the middle.

you are correct sir. All divided roads are paved in a similar fashion. In fact, they usually put in a sheet of metal to mark the centerline and divide the road. It allows for expansion and contraction.

That's so hot... the asphalt...when they lay it.

they tend to pave one side of the road at a time.the earth breaks at the weakest point, thus leaving a perfect split? I also might just be talking out of my ass.

Do you see how thin that pavement is? I'm thinking not.

Paving a road doesn't JUST consist of laying a thin layer of pavement. There are several layers or gravel, dirt, etc. I wouldn't be so fast to discredit it.

Not to mention the effect of years of road traffic has in compacting the ground beneath the road surface.

Its more surprising that the solid rok underneath split along the lines of the road so losely.

My wife saw me looking at this and commented "Only the Japanese can have an earthquake with precision".

Was better than anything I could come up with.

Constant driving in the middle of those lanes somehow compacted the earth beneath it just enough to matter?

It learned in school to cut down the line.
