And for fields like these, you don't even need to go to "no man's land" country side, many are within 15, 20 minutes driving of cities like The Hague and Amsterdam.

In a few weeks' time, I can hop in the car (or better, on the bicycle) and enjoy them!

It's funny, because you see just random colours. I've been working in the tulip industry for a couple of years now, and there are over 100 types of tulips. You might say they're red, purple, yellow, and so on... but there are like 20 different types of red tulips, they all have very slight diffrences. That's why in the picture you see several rows of purple not connected. it's an entire different type. It's astonishing to see how many different types of tulips there actually are.. Also, it's a pain in the ass to work on the fields. also, it's a

I'm going to assume you don't actually work in the tulip industry, because there are thousands of types, not "over 100."

[–]DeviousRetard 1 point2 points ago*

you're right, The thing is, i'm just working for a small "tulip-farm" who doesn't have that many diffrent types, 20 different types at most.

edit: apparently, there are over 100.000 types of tulips, just looked it up. you can safely say atleast 20.000 are red.

I'll never forget Keukenhof from my European vacation. Stunningly beautiful-- I witnessed workers culling out any imperfection visible. The bulbs are engineered to emerge at the same time, so they have these huge swaths of the most vibrant colors you're ever seen.

PROTIP from someone who lives in tulip-land: the Keukenhof (even though it can be extremely crowded) is a good destination, it is pretty and well done, etc etc, however: I personally prefer the raw display of quantity in the commercial fields. Forget all those lovely arranged displays in the Keukenhof, it's standing in those monochromatic mega-fields of RED, then YELLOW, then PINK, that will bring you real joy. On most days you'll only see a few clever (or lost?) Japanese tourists snapping pics with their grandkids and the odd local photographer on a bicycle.

[–]caliform 28 points29 points ago

Yep. However, due to Tulip Mania it's become something very 'Dutch'.

[–]cobrakai11 4 points5 points ago

Originally Persian, became commercialized by the Ottoman Empire, and then introduced to Western Europe. Certainly the Dutch get the props now, though.

[–]Gilltron4000[S] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure. I do know that Tulips are the national flower of Turkey, and I'm pretty sure that the massive arrangement of flowers like such is a Dutch phenomena.

[–]Eruonen 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the Dutch do export millions of tulips a year (more than any other country I believe), so it's probably fair to call them Dutch flowers by now.

[–]timprague 13 points14 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every year they give millions of them to Canada in thanks for taking care of their royal kiddie during WWII.

[–]Buttersnap 5 points6 points ago

[–]TimSimsalabim 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not really a massive arrangement "phenomena", it's just how they're grown. Kinda the same as potatoes, except it looks more interesting.

[–]Gilltron4000[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, it is a large scaled arrangement of flowers, so it kind of is a massive arrangement, and it is an observable occurrence. So it is a massive arrangement "phenomena".

There are from a wide swath of that entire area, including Eastern Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. But the tulips in the Netherlands are said to have come from the Ottoman Empire, although there really is nothing to prove it. Since they are essentially all cultivars now.

I think they should enable sync-to-vblank, the tear effect there is horrible.

Wow... you could do a landscape painting of this scene, in pure classical style and it would be mistaken as an "impressionist" style painting.

Totally thought this was going to be about tulip mania.

Maybe try and compare it to the housing bubble/financial crisis or something.

How do they prevent cross pollination and make sure the next generation are the right color?

[–]TakaIta 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are there to grow (multiply) tulip bulbs, which a is a-sexual reproduction. The seeds from the fields aren't being used. The grown bulbs are to be sold.

It's much like growing potatoes. You don't care about cross-pollination in potato fields.
