Can you explain what this means in english for us non-americans? A penalty of some sort I'm guessing but against whom (the argo?) And what kind of penalty if he already scored. And finally for what? I thought american football players always posture like that (though with more grace) after they score?

[–]Ledted 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Teams are actually Canadian (Canadian Football League) although most of the players are American. Argo is short for Argonaut. The penalized player with the sore nuts is a Toronto Argonaut. You can celebrate a Touchdown (score) but without taunting the opposing players. Doing so will result in an unsportsmanlike penalty.

[–]nandryshak 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When there's a penalty, the referee throw a yellow bean bag (known as the flag) onto the ground where the penalty was. The penalty's name is "unsportsmanlike conduct." For ten yards means that when the opposing team gets the ball back, they will receive an extra bonus ten yards closer to the goal line.

Now, the penalty. The penalty was against the player who in the video spiked the ball and fell over. When you score, you can celebrate, but only with your team. You cannot get close to the other team and deliberately taunt them, which is what the player in the video did: he spiked the ball into the ground clearly to antagonize the opposing team member in front of him.

[–]mediapl0y 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but what about that shove from the other team? That seems way more unportsmanlike.

[–]FortyFs 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In most sports, it's the instigator that gets penalized.

[–]steamfolk 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In American football, usually they'll call both if the retaliation is as big as that and have offsetting penalties.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll try to explain this more clearly than the others.

The argo - A member of the Toronto Argonauts. Toronto Argonauts is the team name of the Blue team(similar to something like Man U).

The penalty is against the Argo player.

As you might know, football is a battle to get closer to the other team's endzone(goal). He got a 10 yard penalty. The other team will be 10 yards closer to the Argo's goalline than they would have been otherwise. This penalty will be applied after the Argonaut's kick the ball off to the other team. For example, if they catch the ball and return it to the 30 yard line it will automatically be moved up 10 yards to the 40 yard line.

Showboating/unsportsmanlike conduct. American football is a lot more tolerant of showboating than Canadian football. However, even in Canadian football you are allowed to celebrate your touchdowns, you just can't make fun of the other team(presumably to stop fights).

As for the shove from the other team's player - that definitely should be a penalty. I don't know why they didn't call that-maybe the ref didn't see it.

He was penalized for excessive celebration. The dude with the ball scored a touchdown, so the play was over, then taunted the opponent. Thankfully for every else, it was a completely hilarious disaster involving a personal favourite of mine, football to the crotch.

I miss the days of team celebrations..

"No fun allowed." - NFL or in this case CFL? I didn't even know there was a CFL!

Is there anything drastically different from the NFL?

[–]Zeppelanoid 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Field = 110 yards and much wider. Teams = 12 players at a time. 3 downs, not 4. Field goal posts are at the goal line, not behind the endzone. Endzones are 20 yards deep, not 10. 20 second play clocks. Balls are bigger (more rounded). No fair catch rules (when receiving a punt, no defensive player can be within 5 yards of the punt receiver before he has touched the ball). A punt/missed field goal is a live ball, if it stays in the endzone (or goes out of bounds in the endzone), the kicking team gets 1 point. Multiple players can be in motion during the snap (i.e. they can take a running start). When making a reception, only one foot has to be in bounds.

There's a whole bunch of other differences, those are just the ones I can think of now. It's really fun to watch. Much faster paced, more "big" plays.

[–]gramie 3 points4 points ago

And the average salary is about $60,000 per year, so these guys really are in it for the love of the game (or because they are hoping to switch to the NFL, which occasionally happens, or because they don't have any other skills). In fact the teams have a salary cap of about $4.2 million, and the minimum salary is $42,000/year.

As I recall, the highest-paid player in the NBA now makes about as much as ALL the players in the CFL combined!

[–]sheerheartattack 2 points3 points ago

Celebration is for whatever reason disallowed, but it's okay to push a guy into the ground?

[–]Zeppelanoid 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Like I said, it was the taunting that did it. Shoving to a certain degree is acceptable (happens all the time after plays). It's football after all, not ballet.

[–]votingprawn 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For some reason, in my mind, taunting is less of an offence than shoving. I mean, these are grown men after all, not young kids doing ballet.

While your reply is a bit snarky, you do have a point about American football. Don't get me wrong, I've been a fan for many years, but the number of commercial breaks and game time without any action can be truly annoying. Last year The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article in the subject.

Looking at four NFL games and comparing data with other research they found:

So what do the networks do with the other 174 minutes in a typical broadcast? Not surprisingly, commercials take up about an hour. As many as 75 minutes, or about 60% of the total air time, excluding commercials, is spent on shots of players huddling, standing at the line of scrimmage or just generally milling about between snaps. In the four broadcasts The Journal studied, injured players got six more seconds of camera time than celebrating players. While the network announcers showed up on screen for just 30 seconds, shots of the head coaches and referees took up about 7% of the average show.

Like any fan, I love the drama of football, the setting up of plays, utilizing the clock and every inch of the field to set up for some amazing, sometimes impossible moment. And play stoppage is part of that. But something could be done to limit the commercials. Of course that will never be done because that's the sport's cash cow. Just wish somehow we could see a different model which could limit the intrusive commercial breaks while maintaining, if not enhancing the great drama.

Couple of random thoughts ...

When I first started following the NFL, it was in Australia, presented by an expat American (Don Lane). It was a weeks worth of games in one show. They featured one game for about 45 minutes and spent another 45 minutes or so on the rest of the games. When you watch an NFL game condensed down to 45 minutes, there's no better sport. It was awesome. Watched my first live game at the Superdome a few years back and was singularly unimpressed. When you bring a dog out on the field to collect the kickoff tee, you have a shit boring game.

Second, related thought. Just watched some of the first round (yes, I refuse to call them second round) games for the NCAAB tourney. They have a 3 minute media timeout every four minutes. You have got to be fucking kidding me, that's disgraceful. Anyway, rant ends. :)

[–]vintagestyles 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it's unsportsmanlike conduct because you can't just run up into the other teams face and spike the ball like that. the rest is just a shitty situation.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dear people downvoting this legit question:

You are not helping. Reddit has an international audience, and the rules of American football can be a little arcane even for me speaking as an American who watches it, but not all the time. Questions like this add to the discussion - you should upvote it or leave it alone and then answer so we can have more discussion, not bury questions.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"without waiting for a commercial break" was a jab at the people who enjoy the sport, insinuating that watching American Football (even though this is the CFL) is a stupid activity. I suspect that's where the down votes are coming from.

[–]norris528e 3 points4 points ago

I downvoted him because his reply was unnecessarily condescending and sarcastic. Promoting discussion is great, but insulting football in a comment asking about the rules of football is just annoying.

[–]votingprawn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was a legitimate question with a bit of humour.

Just because I hate the commercialisation of a sport on such a massive level, doesn't mean I automatically hate said sport.

No. Varsity Blues pulling off 50+ straight losses kind of hit rock bottom for that.

At least he got the personal foul called. Unless it was on him for excessive celebration.

[–]imbrucy 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The full video (posted above) shows it was excessive celebration. So not only did he hit himself in the nuts and get shoved to the ground, he got 10 yards added to the kickoff to go on top.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Nope, it was on him for excessive celebration, added 10 yards to kickoff.

I think it was on #14, since the flag was being pulled out by the time the push occurred.

Even tastier and more hilarious.

I wonder wtf he was thinking when he decided to spike a football, which has a shape that is prone to cause errors in bouncing, between his legs. Whatever, his stupidity is our lulz

[–]RichterScale 6 points7 points ago

That looked like his first lifetime attempt at spiking a football.

[–]MikeBruski 11 points12 points ago

this is extra funny for me to watch, as a european who is used to watching athletes without all the protective padding. The gridiron players look like robots, with their helmets and excessively broad shoulders, and this situation is extra funny when you actually think of them as robots.

I'm serious... just try it.

[–]ultrafetzig 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They look like robots to us too, but if you think that's funny, try imagining that these guys are all monosyllabic neanderthal millionaires with mild to moderate head trauma running around in robot suits.

most of these guys have degrees from very reputable schools. i would even go as far to say that there are probably at least 5 possible future doctors playing on that field at any given time. but hey if just because someone likes to run around and play sports and hit people makes them cavemen in your tiny Neanderthal head, i guess that is cool with me.

I'd argue that most are not all that monosyllabic.

I was watching the Super Bowl with a French national, and they cut to an interview with a football player. He was surprised at how articulate these guys are compared to the professional French soccer players whom he says often never even make it as far as graduating high school.

Where every player gets a ball*!

*May or may not receive whole ball, financial constraints may force CFL to provide all players with equal pieces of a single ball. Five Year Plan calls for an increase in ball production by 5000%.

That's the sad part. Their team had just made an incomplete pass on a 4th down. The player in question is FatBack McGee. He is technically retarded but he can take a hit like no other.

[–]StrayWasp 2 points3 points ago

For those who are interested, the guy who spiked the football was Kerwin Bell, who was a quarterback in the Canadian Football League. He used to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (white jersey team) but was released after the 2000 season. He found work with the Toronto Argonauts (blue jersey team). The clip in question was after Bell ran a quarterback sneak into the endzone for a touchdown. He celebrated by spiking the ball, and the rest is history.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

is that a euphemism?

[–]csjenova 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a flag thrown by the ref. I assume it was thrown as a penalty against the guy that shoved the guy that spiked the ball, but in the NFL there are also excessive celebration fouls...so it could have possibly been for that if it's carried over to the CFL.

[–]thoriginal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, the original penalty was for spiking the ball. There is a celebration penalty in the CFL, too. That said, look up some of the Stampeders' celebrations from the past, including the bobsled, bike, and relay race.

This is great for so many reasons. I love #13 in the front of the frame that gets his knees taken out without warning. I would've loved to be the ref that watched that entire thing go down right before his eyes.
