A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Venezuelan here We call them tepuy or tepui. Roraima is huge. Auyantepuy is where the Angel Falls originate. Lost world was also inspired in the Tepuys

I have never been there, for the trip is very difficult and requires a lot of training and time. My cousin, Elisa has been to both, she's a very determined person and trained for three months to climb El Roraima. To get to the Angel Falls, she told me you have to trek for like four days and then take a curiara (a canoe) up the river for another four days.

There she is:

Bring your own bulletproof vest. At least in Caracas, the crime is astronomically high... If you make it here, let me know.

As an American expat who used to live in Caracas I second that crime is very high there but if you're careful about not wearing flashy clothes and staying out of certain areas it's not as bad as you'd think.

The overwhelming majority of people I met could not have been friendlier.

How long ago did you live there? I'm another former American Expat who lived in Caracas, but left in 99. Apparently it's gotten much much worse than before, with 200 murders per 100000 people. That's a rate much higher even than Iraq, Mexico, etc. It's become the most dangerous place in the world according to the stat's I've seen. If you do go, stay out of the barrios, and get out of Caracas asap. The interior of the country's probably not as bad, as far as crime goes. Also, bring enough money to either fly or take a cab, as the bus station's are pretty shady.

[–]f3rn4ndrum5 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My brother was shot in december, luck was on his side that night for the muggers had a .32 and not a 9mm o .40, the bullet went in and out of his left thigh, about 10mm form the femoral artery. It's bad. My wife and I have two kids, and wanted to buy a house in the nice neighborhood I grew up un (Prados del Este for those here that know CCS) but the amount of crime and houses that thieves break in is outstanding. So we rather stay in our condo with security, you know. The worst part is that they don't only steal your stuff, they also kidnap you and ask for ransom and such. It sucks.

[–]screamingherberbaby 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not as bad as the current cartel wars for sure. There are areas in Caracas that are pretty freaking dangerous of course, but you can just not go to these places and be alright. In live in the interior and it's not that bad. Quite a peaceful place to live in.

OK. This may be a stupid question, but this has always bothered me, and today is my day to ask a silly question:

How does the water get up there?

[–]EthicalReasoning[S] 327 points328 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

rain, it's in the middle of a rain forest. the trees store and release massive amounts of condensation, this causes massive clouds and fog while moisture continues to gathers in the air, once it gets heavy enough it releases more rain and the cycle continues. the wind and weather patterns push these clouds and fog atop that mountain where they release their water, it's actually very rare to see the full mountain it's nearly always shrouded in clouds.

this is also why when you cut down trees, you lose rainfall and cause desertification.

[–]teddyfirehouse 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm still kinda wondering that... I see how it gets up there but it seems like those falls are dumping a lot of water.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i'm only basing this explanation on a few documentaries i've seen - the tops are amazingly wet - with mud several feet deep, plants and bryophytes that retain water, and lots and lots of puddles. it rains on top of these things every day, so the streams and ponds that empty over the falls are replenished daily.

[–]befusaur 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a hydrologist, and I'm wondering how the waterfalls don't run out of water. I'm not sure how big this tepui is, but it would have to rain quite a bit for that many waterfalls to keep flowing year-round (especially in the dry season). It would also require a very interesting groundwater system to provide that much water. My guess is heavy rains and minimal storage. The orographic effect (cooling of air as it is blown up over mountains, yielding a lot of rain) is a definite source of water to the top of the tepui.

Native Venezuelan here, Roraima and all other Tepuis (that what the flat top mountains around there are called) are some of the most ancient solid rocks in the planet, surrounded by plains in most every direction, erosion made this rocks rise like they do now.

Also if there ever was to be a massive wolrdwide earthquake or catastrophe, the Tepuis are the most solid formation of land in the planet, reaching several miles of rock beneath the ground, those bitches ain't moving.

IANAG, this is only a guess

Basically you have rock surrounded by softer rock. Over a very long period of time the land got pushed up and up (it is in the Andes* after all), while during that same time, water slowly eroded the softer rock away, leaving what we see today.

EDIT: *My bad, not the Andes but rather the Guiana Highlands, as pointed out by f3rn4ndrum.

IAAG (long time out of school though) and you're pretty much right. Devil's Tower is the same, except it started as a volcano. Or, if you're a Native American, giant god-bears clawed it into formation.

The Andes wich start (or end) in Venezuela are a lot more to the west of the country.

i was a child in an arid area and i am fascinated that any place can get enough rain to support flowing streams, let alone something of such limited extent.

The natives call it the Table of God. Each year they hold a great feast honoring their god and create giant ceramic plates upon which they place giant foods. Then like ants, they crawl on the food and eat it. This festival is called God's Picnic ... or in Spanish Picnico Del God.

I watched a tv special about this place. Apparently, on top there are some massive sink-holes, and inside of those sink-holes, there are plants and amphibian animals that are not found anywhere else on this planet. As a matter of fact, some types of insects and little frogs are unique to each sink-hole. It is a micro-cosm of unique life.
