Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Guinness should also be served warm, right?

[–]itchyblood 1 point2 points ago

No, definitely not. (Source: I'm Irish, I know...)

[–]moonlapse_vertigo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that was my (apparently futile) attempt at sarcasm.

i talk about beer more than anything else, and you wouldn't believe the number of people that argue that Guinness should be served warm.

they usually respond "well that's how it was served back in the day".

news flash: there was no refrigeration back in the day. just because they HAD to drink warm beer doesn't mean we have to!

[–]Mushy_poo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Back in the day, they'd store their beer in the cellar, and the natural temperature of being below ground would keep it cool to an extent, so it's not like you were drinking 70 degree beer. That's why they still use Cellar to describe a temperature range for serving beer at.

[–]itchyblood 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your sarcasm was hard to detect! Anyway, all is well. Guinness for everyone!

[–]CSSSS 0 points1 point ago

There are two types of Guinness and one of them is deffo drank at room temp. Source: I'm Irish.

[–]Aardshark 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know nothing about Guinness, or how it should be drank, despite having consumed a decent amount of it over the years. Source : I'm Irish.

[–]CSSSS 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not trying to start a war over preference, but, some people like to have extra stout out of a bottle at room temp. Yes the majority of it is served cold. I was just pointing out that people like it warm (room temp) too.

[–]Aardshark 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wasn't taking a dig at you liking it warm. I was just trying to point out the ridiculousness of the "Source : I'm Irish". Just because someone's Irish does not mean they know a bunch of shit about Guinness.

[–]Mushy_poo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, they are supposed to be served between 3-4 degrees Celsius, IIRC.

[–]greeneggsnam 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Considering the cans and pumps say "Serve extra cold" on them, I don't think so.

[–]fizzycyst 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Guinness was always served warm until quite recently, the 1990's I think. You can still get it 'off the shelf' or extra cold, if you please.

[–]turtal46 -1 points0 points ago

[–]serpentjaguar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aren't they mostly lagers though, arising from Japans past association with Germany? I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that, but if I had to go one way or another, I guess I'd definitely come down as an ale man.

[–]surfnaked 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I would say that they are mostly pretty light, but still better, urp, Bud Light.

[–]serpentjaguar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's an odd quirk of history that for whatever reason, it's only in relatively recent history that the British Isles and neighboring regions really started to import ale-brewing culture to the rest of the world. Take North America, for example. Prior to the US Civil War European immigrants were overwhelmingly from the British Isles, but did they make ales? For the most part, no. They brought over their whiskey and rum traditions but left the ale at home. It wasn't until large numbers of German-speaking Central Europeans arrived here that North America really saw an indigenous brewing culture take hold, and of course, because of where it came from, it was based almost entirely on lagers rather than ales. My theory is that it's because beer just plays a greater role in German and Czech society whereas the Irish, Scots, Welsh and English didn't give a shit so long as they could still make whiskey and rum.

Alright, I'm starting to feel a bit drunk. Hope the wife shows up pretty soon, before matters get out of hand.

Really? I've had beer in Japan and Korea and they've all been weak and watery-tasting—slightly better than most American mainstream beers, but hardly "excellent."

[–]surfnaked 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here we have differing tastes. Japanese beer I believe is mostly German in influence, but you are right. I've good but not great Japanese beers. Tsing-tao now. That's a good beer. Chinese though.

[–]rustyshackleford10 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

is it true that napoleon like to move on the right side, so wherever he conquered driving on the right became the norm?

[–]AManFromDoncaster 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Back in the medieval days, people passed each other cautiously on the left so that swords could be drawn by their right hands in order to fend off any plucky ruffian who thought he was hard enough and 'fancied a go'.

The same tradition continued when horse-drawn carts became all the rage, passing to the left so that swords can be drawn by the right hand and quickly used. The tradition saw the British continue to drive on the left of the road until this very day.

The whole practically of right-hand swordsmanship is also the reason that the spiral staircases in many castles are clockwise as you walk up them, the idea being that any guards having to fend off an attack from someone advancing from the dungeon, or intruders fighting their way upstairs, could effectively swing their sword freely in a downward motion. The aggressor fighting his way upstairs would be faced with an obstructed swing as the central pillar would block the path of his sword.

[–]BigNoo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also why you shake hands when you meet people so they can't draw their swords !

[–]radiohead_fan123 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably not.

There is a popular story that Napoleon changed the rule of the road in the European countries he conquered from keep-left to keep-right. Some justifications are symbolic, such as that Napoleon himself was left- (or right-) handed, or that Britain, Napoleon's enemy, kept left. Alternatively, troops passing on the left may have been tempted to raise their right fists against each other. Forcing them to pass on the right reduced conflict. Hence, island nations such as Britain and Japan (using ships to move troops around and having less need to move them overland) continued to drive on the left. These stories have never been shown to have a factual basis and appear to be legends.

Here are some things that are known about the left/right rules:

  • Though originally most traffic drove on the left worldwide, today about 66.1% of the world's people live in right-hand traffic countries and 33.9% in left-hand traffic countries. About 72% of the world's total road distance carries traffic on the right, and 28% on the left.

  • In 1998, archaeologists found a well-preserved track leading to a Roman quarry near Swindon, England. The grooves in the road on the left side (viewed facing down the track away from the quarry) were much deeper than those on the right side. These grooves suggest that the Romans drove on the left, at least in this particular location, since carts would exit the quarry heavily loaded, and enter it empty.

  • Some historians, such as C. Northcote Parkinson, believed that ancient travellers on horseback generally rode on the left side of the road. As more people are right-handed, a horseman would thus be able to hold the reins with his left hand and keep his right hand free—to offer in friendship to passing riders or to defend himself with a sword, if necessary.

  • The first legal reference in Britain to an order for traffic to remain on the left was in 1756 with regard to London Bridge. The Highway Act 1773 contained a recommendation that horse traffic should remain on the left and this is enshrined in the Highway Act 1835.

  • In the late 18th century, the shift from left to right that took place in countries such as the United States was based on teamsters' use of large freight wagons pulled by several pairs of horses. The wagons had no driver's seat, so a postilion sat on the left rear horse and held his whip in his right hand. Seated on the left, the driver preferred that other wagons pass him on the left so that he could be sure to keep clear of the wheels of oncoming wagons. He did that by driving on the right side of the road.

  • Countries that became part of the British Empire adopted the British keep-left rule, although some have since changed. In Canada, the Maritime provinces and British Columbia initially drove on the left, but changed to the right to make border crossings to and from other provinces easier. Nova Scotia switched to driving on the right on 15 April 1923.

Higher than Guinness, Beamish, Kilkenny and Murphys. Lower than a few craft brews like Porterhouse's Oyster Stout. The nicest Irish beers are the new ones no one's heard of. Hope I don't sound snobby!

[–]Mushy_poo 1 point2 points ago

Trust me, you don't! I wish I had the opportunity to sneak away from my family when I visited a few summers back to try and find some brewpubs. We found some nice pubs to have a beer and listen to music at, but it was mostly the same lineup wherever we went unfortunately. One highlight though was having mead brewed at a castle/museum kinda thing down in Bunratty I think?

[–]overcooked 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the brewpubs are few and far between. Only two off the top of my head in the whole country. Most cities have a couple of bars with decent beer selection but that's about it. That sounds like Bunratty, alright. Haven't been there in years so couldn't be sure.

Learned last year to buy the Guinness the day before St. Patrick's day. It seems to sell out on the actual day. Not that the holiday really means anything to me but I do like to drink a Guinness on the day.
