Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Wow, an excellent reply for someone who had no clue about martial arts (I enjoyed the video) but had no real idea what was going on (looked like a lot of flailing about in midair to me...). Very much appreciated!

Martial arts hobbyist here, you got the names right. Good videos, too. For the gif in question, it was obviously a demo if reversing a throw, the man on the right put all the momentum on his back and didn't bend his knees much at all for balance.

Wow, makes me want to get back into Judo.

That was awesome!

The first throw may be Morote Seoi Nage or Tsuri Komi Goshi.

However, the counter throw is 100% Uchimata. Notice after the hop over the leg of UKE (who is actually "Judo" Gene Lebell), the other guy (Matsuda) gets the Uchimata

You'd be surprised how quick somebody goes to sleep from a blood choke

Dude on right attempts attempts to use his leg to throw the guy on the left, the guy on the left isn't playing that shit and preempts the throw by jumping the leg and kicking the other gentleman right in the gooch.

My god, that little guy is strong as hell.

[–]sunsunsun 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's been a while since I was into Judo, but he isn't necessarily strong as hell. He is, instead, talented at using his opponents stance and force against him.

[–]jamesneysmith 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just that final move when the big guy is in the air it looks like the little guy completely changes his trajectory and throws him into the ground. I imagine that would take incredible core strength.

[–]MarcusAurellius 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a Judoku myself, I can confirm sunsunsun. The little guy is actually using his hips to throw the bigger guy and does it by using the bigger guys momentum.

Watch how the bigger guy uses all his momentum to throw the little guy; his force is still moving forwards after the little guy jumped over him (remember the gif is in slow motion). The little guy is able to get in front of him and in the right position to use himself as a pivot right below his opponents hips, allowing him the advantage of only having to give him a little tug in order to flip him off his balance and into a fall.

Very impressive.

[–]nothing_clever 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yay physics! Decrease moment of inertia by rotating about hips, increase moment by pulling at shoulders.

[–]STEVEHOLT27 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed, how he moved positioned himself was simply brilliant and it's not necessarily strength.

One of the crucial aspects of his throw is how he's rolling his opponent across his hip and then lifting his leg off the ground as a counterbalance mid throw.

It could be said that the key to most martial arts is learning how to use your anatomy and physics to make your movements as efficient as possible

[–]imthebossofme 0 points1 point ago

This. I'm pretty sure that most martial arts rely on using an opponents force and momentum against them.

[–]knowpunintended 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are a number that don't, depending on what you mean by using their stance and force against them. Many do because it is an efficient way to make sure you're not brutally punished for being weaker than an opponent.

[–]DPDragon 1 point2 points ago

It's all about the leverage. Using gravity and his own weight against him is the basis of defensive techniques in Judo if I'm not mistaken.

[–]FuckYouGuys 1 point2 points ago

Looks like it to me. Guy up above thought it was a seoi nage but it looks like he's holding onto the lapel.

That counter would never have been possible if the first guy hadn't let the other guy get so far behind him mid-throw and left so much space. Dude needs to spend some time on his uchikomis.

Actually that backward leg sweep is an important part of the move. It helps take the other guy off his balance. Balance in Judo isn't like real-world balance; it's all wonky and dynamic. Being on one leg isn't really a problem if you're headed in the right direction.

This appears to be a clip of a training video of counter throws (kaeshi-waza).

Most likely the throw that is being attempted is harai-goshi and it is being countered by uchi-mata. Neither throw is morote-seoinage.

Google some videos on Yasuhiro Yamashita to see some really good competition Judo.

Also I'd highly recommend "Fighting Spirit Of Judo" by Yamashita for any aspiring competitive Judoka.

I did competitions in my younger days and still do Judo on a weekly basis in addition to my other tradition Japanese martial arts.

I saw the guy identified before as being "Judo" Gene Lebell. Supposedly he called it his trick.

Dont know if that is true.

The man is a badass. I heard a story before where he was doing stunt work for a Steven Segal movie. Supposedly Segal said that he could not be choked and could escape any attempy. Lebell applied a choke and Segal couldnt escape and went out.

He also was teaching Bruce Lee Judo shortly before Bruce Lee died.
