This happens to me a lot, and even people I am completely sure do not know one another, yet they get the same name. I'm inclined to keep it, 'asshole' has a nice ring to it.

This happened to me at work. Started calling a customer "Tom", we continued on this way for about a year, at least 3 times a week. Finally one morning he said "Why do you always call me Tom? My name is Ellis." Thanks for telling me, dude. /sigh

Well, Tom, you remind me of Tom Anderson, the founder of myspace. Because you're automatically my friend. I thought you got the joke. /backpedal

Your dealer? My dealer called me brian for a while too. I got my friend to call me John repeatedly in front of him. The funny thing, John's not even my name!! No, it is.

Wow, I love Friends but I've never seen that episode. Glad to know it happens to you and Chandler too! That clip also illustrates something funny about the situation...if you don't nip it in the bud immediately, it just gets worse and worse because now it's ridiculous that you haven't corrected the person up to this point, but you really can't correct it now because of said ridiculousness, and it spins into a downward spiral of silly

I was "Carolina" for a time, and then "Daisy". Oh, and of course, the obvious "Christine".

My friend Zach was once called ... Ant by someone he worked with. Dead serious, not as a joke. Ant. How the fuck do you screw up someone's name that badly?

I was called "shaun" for an entire semester by my female study partner, turns out I was friends with her boyfriend the entire time. When I finally hung out with both of them at the same time hilarity ensued

Why do people do this? If you don't know someone's name, don't use a name in conversation or ask if it's really necessary. This type of thing doesn't seem to be a case of mistaken identity either, it's just one day someone starts calling you a name and they stick with it.

Most often happens to me with "Luke" as the incorrect name.

When I was a Sophmore in high school one guy in the group that I would hang out with sometimes kept calling me AJ. I guess I looked kinda like someone else he knew named AJ. Sometimes I corrected him, sometimes not, but within a couple of weeks he was doing it on purpose. Within a month, everyone in the group was calling me AJ. As time went on we got some new people in the group who never knew me as anything but AJ.
