Would be cool, but its set in a floating city reminiscent of 19th century America.

Nah, that's Bioshock Infinite. I don't think Bioshock 3 has been announced yet.

For s second I thought that said "yiffing session" and I immediately questioned why I continue to use the internet.

The mecha-dog is a bit far-fetched (get it?) but I did read about the Russians keeping dog heads alive separate from the body in the book Stiff by Mary Roach. Can't remember how long the heads survived, but I don't believe it was very long.

i remember seeing a video or reading about that too. didn't realize it was to make a super awesome mechanodog.

TIL the word mechanodog.

They did all kinds of crazy experiments with dog heads stitched on to other dogs and all sorts of stuff. The findings led to the development of pacemakers and heart transplants.

I thought heart transplants were first done in south africa, don't know where I picked that up though.

In SA, we are seriously proud of this. Most little nations don't get to boast about stuff like this, but everyone here knows of Christiaan Barnard.

[–]Wibbles 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A couple of people seem to have misinterpreted my comment. I didn't mean that the russians invented pacemakers and heart transplants, but that their crazy experiments with dogs and artifical hearts provided valuable research for those developments.

[–]fireflex 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe from wikipedia?

The world's first human heart transplant was performed by Christiaan Barnard on December 3, 1967 in Cape Town South Africa on a man called Louis Washkansky.

The dog head thing is real.

The robot is not.

[–]halfwolf 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did not believe that the robot dog was real, but after about 2 minutes of internet searching I couldn't find any evidence for its existence or lack thereof. Where did you find evidence that its fake? Or are you just stating an opinion?

[–]DefMech 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not objective proof, but the style of the robot is too contemporary to be from the time period depicted. Specifically, it looks like something created by a person recently, intended to appear old, but deriving inspiration from creative works that came between now and when these documents are purported to have been created. Both in the form and design of the machine, but also the way it is drawn.

[–]gosp 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The dog head surviving on machines is readily available in video form. Complete with creepy announcer and music.

The robot part was just added by an artist. I don't know who it was, but the last time this was submitted, his page was linked.

[–]Burlapin 4 points5 points ago

Nearly a hundred comments and no one has pointed in the direction of Vladimir Demikhov?

The Russians have done some crazy awesome research with limb, organ, and even head transplantation. They managed to graft a dog's head onto another dog (so you had a two-headed dog). Didn't live very long...

They pioneered many techniques which are in common use today.

It's graphic and kindof creepy, but if you want to see more, this video shows some of their work. I can't find it at the moment, but there's another which shows how they kept a monkey's head alive for a while. To paraphrase, it "was rather grumpy and even bit one of the researchers."

[–]wetpaste 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the part where the dog and the extra head are both drinking water is a total wtf. This is exactly what I was thinking the original post was referring to. Amazing and fucked up.

This is very reminiscent of Alexander Belyayev's short story Professor Dowell's Head. In the story a scientist manages to a.) keep dog's heads alive hooked up to a "life machine" and b.) proceeds to move on to procuring human heads from the freshly deceased and keeping those alive.

Border collies are not the same as Collies. Border collies are smart to the point of neurosis. Collies have enough brain cells to eat and bark.

[–]gratefulgrass 0 points1 point ago*

There's actually a video out there of an old experiment where they have a severed dog head kept alive with a machine similar to that in the first picture. I haven't seen it in awhile.

Seriously what is up with that? Do posts fall into some kind of cross-post purgatory where they bounce back and forth between a couple social news sites? Someone finds it on Reddit, posts it to Digg, someone sees it there, reposts it back here, and the cycle continues...

[–]soulworksinc 0 points1 point ago

anyone out there translate this for us? damn fascinating, I must say. would love to know where it's from, even if it's fiction.

[–]Peter-W 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems like fiction to me, but Russian Scientists did manage to transplant one dogs head onto another's body, although the new head could not control the body the two headed dogs lived for about two weeks.
