Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Hahaha. One of my favorite scenes. Especially the part where they do the trial by stone.

When I was a kid and still watched his show all the time, my father met him in an airport terminal. He couldn't resist talking to one of his son's favorite television figures, so he ended up having a conversation with Bill about science and the future of education and stuff. At the end he got an autograph and I was pretty pleased as a 10 year old.

My father said he seemed like a real nice guy, so I'm not sure what all these douche comments are talking about.

I only know one person who has met him, and they said he was an asshole and very arrogant. I don't know if it's true or not, but that's what they said and I don't see why they'd make that up.

EDIT: not that there's anything wrong with that.

During college I was in two lectures he "taught." Both times he was really funny and had no problems with most of the class wanting to take silly pics with him after the class.

I think it just depends on the situation. If he's just walking around town I'm sure he doesn't want people bothering him. But if he's at his Alma Mater giving a lecture I'm sure he doesn't care and will be a lot nicer.

This.

I saw Bill Nye a couple of weeks ago here at CU Boulder, and he gave a presentation about the energy crisis and the environment.

During Q&A, the event organizer said that there wouldn't be any further questions. It looked like Bill was a little ticked, and explained how there are more students that want to ask him questions, and said, "No, MORE questions!"

I have heard the very opposite; he is quite amicable when approached in a polite and appropriate context.

He's just a private person who lost his patience for rabid fans years ago.

I've always heard this too from people that met him.

[–]SlumpBuster 8 points9 points ago

my roommate, lets call him josh, met Bill Nye yesterday at a science convention for teachers in the bay area. i think the actual location was in san francisco.

anyways, to agree with Umphreak, josh said he was very rude and kind of an asshole. he cut him off when walking through the door for starters. josh was going to say something but then realized it was Bill Nye the mutha fuckin' science guy. so instead of being rude, josh instead asked if he could get his picture taken with him.

the interaction went down like this. "hey, you are Billy Nye right? i am a really big fan of yours and was wondering if i could get a picture to show my students tomorrow." bill nye's reactions went a little something like this, "Calm down... take a deep breath. i am busy right now so i can't take a picture."

now that would have been a proper reaction had he not been in a huge conference room that could easily seat 100 people but instead had only 15 people in it. after Bill had said that to josh, bill proceeded to sit down and wait 10 minutes for the speaker to start. so he really wasn't busy at all.

tl;dr: bill nye is kind of an asshole just like umphreak said.

You know what though? I don't even care.

I can be an asshole sometimes, and I'm definitely arrogant. That doesn't mean that I'm not awesome, and it doesn't mean Bill Nye isn't awesome. I have lots of friends that are arrogant assholes, I'd probably get along with Mr. Nye just fine.

At a speaking event for a university he was a pretty big jerk. He was paid a lot of money to come and after wards some people had the chance to meet him (under 25 people) and he basically refused to take pictures and insulted some of the regents (not that big of a deal but it looks pretty bad on the students who brought him there). It's not really a big deal that he comes off as a jerk, but you would think if he didn't like people wanting to meet him, etc he wouldn't do public appearances. Also, the irony is that a few years before Karl Rove came to speak and he was a very polite and nice person and went out of his way to help coordinate, etc, so I guess you never really know.

[–]dkdl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, he's come to my college before, and I heard multiple people saying that he's actually a douche.

The only concrete story I've heard is on Reddit (however much reliability you want to give to it), but apparently a group of first graders saw him outside their classroom, got very excited and finally convinced their teacher to take them out to meet him. When the teacher approached him, he'd have none of it and made every single one of the kids march back to their classroom.

[–]slipnslider 0 points1 point ago

When I was 9 years old I was very into science, collected rocks, went to museums, pretended to explain my father's marine biology studies and all other sorts of activities that naturally get you laid if carried over into high school.

I was a big fan of Bill Nye, his show and even found myself recreating experiments (or at least pretending to ) in my backyard to the best of my abilities. On a field trip in Boston a few years later a group of us saw him coming towards us in passing on a crosswalk, I stopped to introduce myself and thank him.

Before the "th-" sound could get out of my mouth he told me to fuck off. Asshole? Confirmed.

The entire BNtSG series is available as a torrent. I downloaded it last year. My plan is to download all the science/education shows of my youth so I can create my own television channel for my kids some day.

Old school sesame street, BNtSG, Magic Schoolbus, that show with the penguins I can't remember the name of (EDIT: Beakman's World!). I figure I'll only let them watch at most 1-2 hours of tv a day so I really only need a few good shows.

This man is responsible for a large portion of the science that today's. 22-28 year olds know

Inertia is a property of Matter

TRUE FACT! i saw bill nye the science guy on his bike in LA, I guess he was going to work. you should know that he lives the character he plays on tv in that he wears the same clothes, and even wears a bike helmet with a rear view mirror attachment. i think that is pretty cool that his on screen character matches his real life character...like CHARLIE SHEEN!! I'll tell you what, he is no rainbow fuckin randolf.

He came to my city this past fall to give a talk about how space exploration is good because it gives us insights into our own planet, including global warming. He made a lot of awesome, insightful points and seemed ever the gentleman.

I'm apparently the third person to meet him swing dancing in SoCal (Pasadena, here). He was wearing a bow tie and he came up to my group of 3 girls and me (a guy) and said "I will dance with every one of you tonight." Then to me, "Except you. Sorry." The girls had fun.

TLDR: Got cockblocked by Bill Nye.

My friend and I were talking about Bill Nye actually (when we watched the Samuel L. Jackson cameo on the "Bill Nye Show" that was on the front page yesterday).

The thing that makes Bill Nye great is his enthusiasm. He sounds so excited about science - it's contagious. I watch clips from his show and I still get excited about whatever he's talking about (same reason I love watching Neil De Grasse Tyson's stuff). I always loved "Bill Nye the Science Guy" when I was a kid. I definitely credit him for making me such an inquisitive person (I love just finding out the science behind stuff - the way it works).

No he isn't. He came to my city in the fall. He was definitely not good with kids. He showed up for maybe an hour for the event he was supposed to do that the town hyped for forever and just sat and drank coffee in the morning when he was supposed to have an interactive breakfast with the kids.

Random people showed up at his house, and based on how a normal person would react, he seemed pretty chill. Stoner-like even.

You know... I LOVED this guy as a kid, and one day I finally got to see him in REAL LIFE at a friggin' NASA mars rover presentation... and then he wasted an hour and a half of my life talking about a sun dial placed on the mars rover... JOKES ON YOU BILL NYE - I STILL RATHER ENJOY YOUR TELEVISION ANTICS! - PSH, thought he could shake me there

I'm going to back up what has been said, he's arrogant and an asshole. And I also know a friend who used to work on the set of his show. He says he would always light up before a scene. So, although he's a douchebag, at the same time, he's fucking awesome!

He is is no way near the same level as Gallileo, Newton, etc, but that's not what he's trying to do. He isn't revolutionizing "science" or anything, he's helping to explain things to the layman.
I don't know who would be comparing Bill Nye to mother fucking Einstein, but that's just crazy. Nye is a teacher more than a scientist, and at that he excels.

[–]Namaha 1 point2 points ago*

Bill Nye was basically the Mr. Wizard of the 90's. And there ain't a thang wrong with that. Getting young people interested in the sciences is something more people should be doing.

What degree do you have? What's wrong with a bachelors degree?

Some of the smartest people also never went to, or never finished, college.

Do you expect every worthwhile scientist to have a fucking Ph.D or something? Sheesh.

He came to visit us in our lab at Georgia Tech. We were definitely starstruck. This pretty much sums up our collective reaction.
