Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Most of this infographic is pure bullshit. I'm not a sleep expert, but did study it extensively for my degree and had severe sleep apnea which required years of sleep studies. Your sleeping position has as much to do with your personality as your handwriting or favorite flavor of ice cream. Sorry infographic, DailyMail, tastyhuman.com, and assorted blogs are not peer-reviewed journals to source.

I hope you're right...but now that I've seen it, I won't be able to un-see it. 'No! You're sleeping in the wrong position! We're not compatible!!'

How the frig would they know that you can only dream faces you've already seen? Is there some technology someone's not telling me about?

I was thinking this too. I had a very vivid dream just last week involving a complete stranger in a starring role, but who knows, did I pass this girl on the street and my subconscious memorized her face? I doubt it....

Since the pic discussed dreams quite a bit I thought I'd mention Melatonin.

Melatonin is sold in the USA as a sleep aid, but one of the side effects of taking Melatonin to help you sleep, is that people often have intensely vivid dreams while taking it.

One of the reasons I tried it was because I read of this effect, and I must say, I was not disappointed. It helps me dream intensely, and that's worth alot to me.

Melatonin is illegal in some countries, but available everywhere in the USA. Ask a doc first, but if you're having trouble sleeping or dreaming, I'd recommend it.

Killface: If there's a few bucks left over, you know, go get something nice.

[24 hours earlier in a hotel]

Wendell: [into phone] Yeah, hey I'd like a $9,000 prostitute, please. Oh, do you have nine $1,000 ones? Yeah, good, and if you got an albino, send her up too. In 20 minutes, I'm gonna be asleep, so get 'em up here. [Hangs up] Had, like, half a bottle of melatonin, six beers, this whole fucking bucket of chicken--the sandman is comin'.

All of those pictures used for the position chart (See sheep 8) look as if they come from this music video called Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie. Great video, just couldn't help but notice.

Here we go:

  • "Your brain recharges" is currently only one hypothesis about the function of sleep.

  • "You can only dream about faces you've only seen". Can you? Or is this a case of you forcing recognition on to it in the same style that sometimes happens when trying to remember the perpetrator of a crime. I've heard this mentioned, but have thus far never seen any study backing it up. Nor can I even grasp the concept of a psychological experiment that can reasonably test this.

  • "People who do not dream generally have personality disorders". What? Just, no. See various books and conference presentations referenced in http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9952252 - specifically schizotype, borderline and narcissistic.

  • "Sleep positions may determine your personality". First of all, what's a sleeping position? Most people shift around in their sleep and most people I've slept with have multiple positions. Secondly, correlation does not imply causation. Thirdly, "personality"? They could at least have gone for a Meyers-Briggs personality typing, rather than these sorry excuses for personality.

  • Discussing blind people "seeing" in dreams, specifically those who were born blind, is edging into the realms of philosophical discussion and whether we can truly know what someone else is experiencing and whether those experiences are the same as our own/universal.

  • "50% of your dream...90% of your dream". I'd love to know how the hell this was quantified. Who even has a concept of time in a dream? If people are prone to forgetting dreams upon waking, how do you even know that you've remembered 100% at the moment precisely at waking (and therefore 50% later etc.). How does this take account of people, e.g. me, remembering dreams later in the day?

  • "Sources". Yes, quite. I think "sauces" would be a better way to describe this.

Just wondering how blind people are able to see images in their dreams?

[–]Cockofages 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe it was referring to people who are not born blind, that can still see mental images when they dream.

It also said something to the effect that people born blind experience dreams through emotion, sound, touch, etc.

This is such BS. You're always dreaming.

[–]thebirdbirdbird 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. They may be referring to people that don't remember their dreams, and if so then that would mean my gentleman friend has a personality disorder. Which he does not.

[–]DeMoB 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The graphics from point 8 have been lifted from a stop motion video of some kind. I remember watching it a while back but can't remember enough about it to find it again.

It consisted of her dreaming about stuff, and was all from the perspective above the bed. Anyone else know what it was?

[–]Aitioma 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uhmm... what?

We can only dream about faces we have seen? How would you know that? That is not scientifically possible to know (yet).

On the brain recharging front, Orcas and dolphins seem to have no sleep behaviour 24 hours a day for the first month of their lives, likewise their mothers (see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15988513). The amount of sleep gradually increases over a number of months. Not sure if there have been any EEG studies done, however. Could be tricky!

They've done studies on rats. A few days awake and the rat dies. Plus... there's also those experiments done on the Chinese and Europeans in WW2...

[–]kawavulcan97 0 points1 point ago

I knew about the rats, but I don't know of the experiments from WWII, so maybe I'm wrong about no human ever dying.

Not sleeping is incredibly fucking dangerous. You know how amazingly shit you feel if you stay up an extra day or so? Yeah, that's not your body running perfectly.

[–]kawavulcan97 -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dangerous in the sense that you might fall asleep while driving, yes. Is it going to kill you on its own? Probably not. I mean it can have some long term effects like higher blood pressure which could shorten your lifespan, but you're not going to drop dead from not sleeping.

[–]Sqwalnoc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they did a study about this back in the seventies or something, they kept some guy awake for 10-11 days but had to stop when his heart became irregular and his organs showed signs of dysfunction, a couple more days and they reckon he would of died. not sleeping for almost two weeks can kill you

[–]MrPopinjay 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok. I dare you to not sleep for a few weeks.

[–]NuQ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't true... you can go pretty long without sleep. for instance, those who suffer from a rare disease known as Fatal Familial Insomnia go several months(sometimes close to a year) without sleep.

  • Stage 3: Complete inability to sleep is followed by rapid loss of weight. This lasts for about three months.
  • Stage 4: Dementia, during which the patient becomes unresponsive or mute over the course of six months. This is the final progression of the disease, resulting in death.
