Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Why do our palms and feet get sweaty when we look at pictures of heights? Why we get that tingly feeling in our hands and feet? Can anyone give a legitimate answer on this?

[–]mauriciobr 11 points12 points ago

Irrational fear of dying?

[–]Yargyarg 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's more a rational fear of dying. Think of it in terms of natural selection, those that are scared of heights would typically stay away from them, making them more likely to continue to live, whereas those that AREN'T scared of heights are more likely to not realize the danger involved in heights and take riskier measures to, say, acquire food on a very high ledge. More humans that took greater risks died, the trait of being "automatically" scared of heights became more prevalent/dominant, and voila, most people are instinctively scared of heights.

[–]hiphoprising 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps it is the bodies way of saying "Hey man, you are near an instant death zone. All the genes that didn't make the average person cautious of heights disappeared a loooong time ago, so it's just us genes that code for being scared of instant death left over. So I'm going to make you scared, so you don't walk off the edge like those other wanker genes that didn't give a damn about their host".

[–]SigmoidFreund 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a result of sympathetic nervous system mass action (also known as fight or flight - coincidentally). Humans have a pre-programmed fear of heights (look off the side of a bridge; you are safe but suddenly feel your entire GI tract shut down and get the jitters). If you fall from a height of greater than about 100 feet, there is almost no way you will survive (including hitting water). You can also die falling from heights much less than that, of course.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

More precisely, it may have done so for some of our distant ancestors. For Homo sapiens in particular, it's not nearly so effective.

Good. Fucking. Question. As any climber will tell you, whenever we watch a climbing video our palms will sweat instinctively. It is not the fear --I have little of that for heights. But something about how our hands remember that exercise they endure while climbing, and how they like to sweat it off.

As a huge fan of "bouldering" (low'ish height climbing, of varying degrees of difficulty ranging from easy, to all but impossible except to the most genetically amazing) and someone who is awed by the incredible feats of dare by Alain Robert. (Man in picture) I enthusiastically recommend trying bouldering at a local rock climbing gym near you. Everyone I've ever takin with me has had a great time. It's a great community, and every gym I've been to is filled with a supportive, and friendly atmosphere.

[–]jesus_lil_stinkr 2 points3 points ago

Absolutely. I find it is a great work out too. It works every part of the body and you don't realize you are exercising because you are completely absorbed in getting to the next hold.

Bouldering is fun but personally I prefer the rush that comes from the "climb, climb, climb, climb, (mistakenly glance down) HOLY HELL I'M HIGH UP" (brief moment of panic.) Also, chimney climbs are really low on the difficulty scale but it's exhausting.

I was raised calling what this guy is doing as a "chimney" climb.

There's a lot of dead people like this.

If I don't do any climbing and have heard of two separate deaths in freeclimbing, then this isn't ballsy, it's just stupid.

A-a-aaaacho. You're dead.

[–]CliffTard 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a free solo. Free climbing only denotes not using equipment to aid progression, but it can protect you for sure (rope, etc). Deaths during free (protected) climbing are common, deaths in free (unprotected) solos are almost unheard of.

Experienced free soloists usually only do this when they are 99.99999999...% certain that they will not fall, and history proves they are almost always right.

The building or rock would have to break before they fall.

[–]Sasken 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Problem is, rock does break.

I read a climber's biography (don't remember who) where he described a free solo he did on some sea cliffs in Britain. As he came up to a ledge, a bird decided it was HIS ridge and started pecking his fingers. He lived, obviously, but he stopped free soloing after that. He realized that it's not just about skill, it's also about luck and only a fool relies on luck.

[–]Charles3000 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You read a biography and you can't remember anything about it to get the name?

[–]CliffTard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unexpected things may happen, like rock breaking while a soloist pulls delicately and efficiently on it, or being attacked by a bird, but trying to account for some of these possibilities is pointless. You solo when you believe you control the situation. If you stop believing you control the situation and solo, you can indeed be labeled a fool. It's mostly (99.lots-of-nines%) about skill. Mostly enough for some, not mostly enough for others.

Anyone else hear that muffled FWUMP?

That was the sound of a thousand redditor buttholes slamming shut in unison.

If that makes you nervous, go find some videos of what Alex Honnold has been up to lately. Like free soloing the regular northwest face of half dome

I felt a little dizzy when I thought "Maybe he set the timer on his camera, tossed it up, then caught it."

I read that vertigo, when you're perfectly safe is caused by a something that has been called "desire of death" (I don't know the exact translation in english), but your mind can't help imagining you throwing yourself, it's unconscious, there were discussions about the fact that the mind wants it or not, maybe it's just a desire to answer the question of death without necessarily wanting it

Anyway that's an interesting concept

I think he is ok at that point because his feet are notches in the wall. The thing that makes my balls curl up is thinking that to get down you either have to go all the way up or all the way down.

5.8 chimney?? I wouldn't do it free, but there are a lot more impressive climbing feats out there. (Like Michael Reardon (now deceased) climbing Romantic Warrior 5.12 - 12 pitches)
