Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I feel your pain. I have a subscription to NatGeo and Backpacker. Every day after work I go home and check out those mags and think to myself "I'm not doing it right."

I hear that. But it's shots like this that really motivate me to work harder so I can get back out there!

I feel the same way. I used to have subscriptions to Backpacker and Outside, but I find it's just so damn expensive to travel now. I have to go do stuff outside locally, and frankly, it sucks here.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

I'd be sure you're being sarcastic, if it weren't for the fact that I've thought that exact same thing about some other landscape pictures.

If I could get over my loathing of airports, I hear ya. I'd have liked to have helped the croc hunter. That man had the proper respect for nature. I always preferred reptiles and amphibians, the turtle is like the ocean's hippie.

Guys, you don't have to go THERE to be/do cool things! All you need is to do it! I went out and got my pilot's license a while back. Totally worth it; it makes the entire West Coast of the USA available to me as a day trip. I can work a full day at my home near Sacramento, grab a bite, jump in the plane, and be in San Diego (600 miles) in time for a normal bed time.

It isn't exactly CHEAP, but it really isn't that expensive, either, comparing nicely to standard commercial airfare if I take a couple passengers, without all the wait, and with a delivery to a small, local airport instead of the mega-airport with 2 hours drive at either end.

Disclaimer: I also play lots of minecraft!

[–]JCacho 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So... how much did your plane cost? How much did the license cost? How long did it take you to get it? How much do you pay to store the aircraft, etc?

[–]mcrbids 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm a member of a flight club. It's a hybrid ownership model halfway between a rental and ownership. I pay a small monthly fee (less than $100) to cover running costs like annual inspection, hangar fees, and have voting rights on things like upgrades to the plane, hangar location, etc. It cost a few thousand to buy in.

The license cost just over $10k, and took just over a year for me to get (very) part time.

My cost to fly is about $75 for every 100 miles of travel. Since planes fly straight and cars rarely do, it works out to about $55 for every 100 miles. The IRS deduction for travel is $0.50/mile so business travel just about breaks even. (I happily pay the difference)

EDIT: I love flying, so it was worth every penny.

[–]JCacho 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the info. How did you first get into it? How does one go about obtaining a pilot license? Does your license allow you to cross state lines?

[–]mcrbids 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got into it meeting a pilot at an airplane museum. My first flight cost $50, and that's what got me hooked. You have to take "ground school" - think a semester-length course. You have to fly with an instructor for a minimum of 20 hours (Sport pilot) or 40 hours (private pilot) and then pass a flight exam.

While it's harder than driving, it's not all that vigorous. You only have to pass the written test with 70% or so (I got 94% and was sure I was going to fail) and the flight exam is basic stuff, like can you land the plane, can you turn it, can you land with a simulated engine failure, etc.

I can fly anywhere in the world. I have to have a passport in foreign countries, and comply with their laws. (Mostly, paperwork EG: Passport and flight rosters) I've never flown into foreign airspace, though I did fly to within a mile or two of the US/Mexico border once.

Well, I am sitting here at my job in Japan, land of anime, cute girls, and a whole lot of beer, and guess what. I am on reddit, and I will prolly go home this afternoon and get on reddit. It is not where you are but who you are. If you want change, even though it is very difficult and makes little sense, you have to change YOU first, not what you do or where you are. When 'you' changes this awesome stuff will just start to happen. Caelum non animum mutant qui trans mare currunt.

Here's why I hate James Cameron. Let me explain.

When Avatar came out and people started getting depressed, they said this: Ugh, life here is so dull and grey, I know life will never be like Pandora, which is so beautiful.

Now, whenever I see amazing, glorious pictures like these, my mind immediately goes, "Tell those whiners to look at this damn picture!"

Damn you, Avatar!

[–]EthicalReasoning 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but wasnt that the whole point of avatar? to look at the way humans interact with earth?

the earth was (some still is) equally as beautiful until humans massacred and destroyed everything to extract its resources and exploit people for money

[–]Dinosaursoldier 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What does this have to do with James Cameron and Avatar? Seriously? This infinitely more to do with depression and being unadventurous/unable to travel than one man's imagination. Our world is beautiful and so is his fake one. You say damn James Cameron for creating a beautiful world? I say kudos to him for the same reason.

In summary: If you are going to hate James Cameron for how other people react to his movie, you need to figure some shit out.

[–]PixieFurious 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh no worries, that's not the only reason I hate James Cameron. So, I'm good.

[–]Vole85 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]PresidentJonStewart 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hated him before you did.

[–]IntriguinglyRandom 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hehe, I actually agree with you. People are always like "Man, I wish I lived there", and to that I'd say "Bitch, you do!" ... people just don't see the beauty around them. Just look at a fucking leave outside. Closely. Look at the arrangement of branches on a tree. It's all amazing. I guess I could say we don't have an issue with James Cameron; we have an issue with his blind-ass fans. Also, another take could be that most of those people wishing they could be there probably wouldn't actually enjoy it if they *were there because it's the natural environment, something many people nowadays are alienated from.

Although, I do admit I'm not a fan of his for Avatar in that I honestly thought it was far less than spectacular, which is in conflict the opinion of many people I encounter. Seriously, what the hell was so ground breaking? Sure, it was pretty, but no, it was not a leap ahead of other films -in any way.
