Fuck this kind of packaging. (imgur.com)

The appropriate way to open those is to bent it furiously at all different angles and speeds while cutting up your hands and shouting profanities.

Radioshack is making a new type of packaging where you soak the packaging in water and it dissolves, leaving you with your product.

employee: Sorry sir we can't take this back, the GPS inside has clearly been smashed.
him: Smashed? Well that's not my fault, I haven't even opened the the product. Didn't even touch it.
[–]AuxHero 56 points57 points58 points 1 year ago
You must learn to curb your enthusiasm when opening packages like these.
[–]nothingcleverleft 30 points31 points32 points 1 year ago
I can't help it. Sometimes I even get my mouth involved. Grabbing the package with my teeth and ripping outward over, and over. Growling in a way similar to a bear tearing apart it's food. It is only then, with bleeding gums and broken teeth, that I can finally use my new flash drive.
[–]AuxHero 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago

I can never understand why the responsible companies haven't been sued for death by unpackaging. We have blankets warning us not to attempt flying, hairdryers warning us not to operate while asleep, and yet these murderous devices remain unchallenged in their ongoing massacre...
[–]brokenseattle 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I rather badly mauled my hand last Christmas in my exuberance at opening my Skull Kandy Ti's. I live 40 miles from the nearest hospital. Instead of taking my chances driving in 4ft of snow, I glued my flesh back together and wrapped that shit in hockey tape like a boss.
[–]Dinorider22 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
That's what you get for using Skull Candy headphones.
[–]EverySingleDay 482 points483 points484 points 1 year ago
It's called clamshell packaging.
It allows product manufacturers to showcase the actual product in an aesthetic way, while keeping it safe during the shipping process and acts as a mild deterrent for theft and vandalism.
Some products exist to open clamshell packaging easily and safely.
Some manufacturers offer clamshell packaging with easy-open interfaces.
There exist instructions online regarding how to open clamshell packaging easily.
Amazon has started a frustration-free packaging program, which offers a clamshell-packaging-free alternative to some products.
[–]te_anau 88 points89 points90 points 1 year ago
Let me guess what the clamshell opening device comes encased in?
[–]joepeg 83 points84 points85 points 1 year ago

[–]inshallah13 167 points168 points169 points 1 year ago
Your reply seems too practical
[–]KingofCosmos 33 points34 points35 points 1 year ago
I was coming in here to talk about Amazon's new frustration-free packaging program. It is fantastic. I bought some Sony headphones from Amazon and they came in a plastic package. However, all I had to do was tear off the back paper and I could access the headphones easily. I gave it 5 stars and swore I'd buy my electronics from them again.
[–]ZanThrax 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
How effective would the Amazon style packaging be in a retail environment where one of the major reasons for the impossible-to-open clamshells is to prevent casual theft?
[–]minorcorrectionguy 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Does it matter? Amazan has their own trucks now, and (in at least one area) can do same-day (or very nearly so) delivery. I can't remember the last time I bought electronics in a retail environment. Is anyone besides Apple doing well at electronics retail these days?
I can imagine a day when packaging something in indestructible plastic for retail is like legacy connectors: oh, your printer comes with a parallel port? How quaint! Did you pay extra for that?
[–]Kalium 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
There are redditors who work in this group.
[–]potatolicious 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago*
Yes there are. And we're always happy to see FFP hitting the news. :)
If you want to support this initiative (besides buying the stuff), please go and leave packaging feedback. We use this data to help bring more and more products into the frustration-free world.
For people not in the US, you can also do this in: France, UK, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
it's designed that way so when you completely destroy the packaging trying to open it, you feel like you can't return it later.
[–]pomegranati 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
shit I never though about using a can opener before.
[–]TrickyTricky 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago

[–]spif 222 points223 points224 points 1 year ago
I bought some in-ear headphones at the airport one time, and obviously I didn't have a cutting instrument, so I asked the clerk if he could cut open the package. The dude cut himself severely on the plastic, he was bleeding all over. Had to get first aid from security IIRC.
So yeah, fuck that shit.
[–]sparcnut 44 points45 points46 points 1 year ago
Hmm... if the packaging is really that dangerous, shouldn't they ban it on planes too?

[–]Tato5 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago

[–]AttackTribble 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
My phase plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.
(BTW, thanks Candyman420)
[–]marthirial 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
Well, aren't we missing the point here. Yes, I could use a Jaws of Life to open the packing but the post is about the extremely hostile approach to packing.
I punish with the wallet. Brands packing this way never get my business again.
If you've got the right tools, the packaging ceases to be a problem.
Granted, occasionally it feels like the right tool is a pulse plasma rifle in the 40 watt range...
[–]dialtech 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Yeah, going straight to the hardware store tomorrow buying an appropriate tool so I can open packages.
[–]tpill90 61 points62 points63 points 1 year ago
These things are actually really easy to get open.
They put them in these packages because they seem to think that it makes it harder to shoplift them, but it actually makes it easier. For the record I don't steal anything, just 2 and a half years in electronics retail you see this all the time.
Because the product is neatly tucked in by the plastic, it makes it easier to slice out. All you have to do to open it is take a boxcutter, and slice right along the edges where the product is.
In case my description wasn't clear : http://imgur.com/5QJSC
[–]ScottishRambler 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
I have to agree while I understand that a lot of people have issues opening this type of packaging I personally just use a sharp knife to cut an opening.
[–]jennfrog 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
I do this except I don't usually have a boxcutter around so I just open up the scissors and use one of the points as if it were a boxcutter or exacto knife.

just 2 and a half years in electronics retail you see this all the time.
Got any good stories?
[–]IntelSoap 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
no good comes from working retail... sorry.
[–]ejtttje 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I dunno, I try to do this with an x-acto knife and something about that plastic still makes it really hard to cut — like a lot of friction with the metal so it doesn't slide without a lot of effort, making it easy to slip and slice yourself. Plus the depth of the plunge is hard, either you wind up cutting two layers (and need some kind of backing), or you try to cut just the top layer but wind up not getting a complete cut.
I hate these packages with a passion. Enough to buy a different product if I have a comparable choice.
EDIT: oh, and then if you take the scissor or just-cut-all-the-way-through approach with a knife, they hide some instructions or manual or small adapter wires between the marketing panels, and then you wind up discovering you've cut those in half too. rageface
[–]DraperyFalls 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
When I was a kid, I used to shoplift compulsively and I can confirm this. Stealing portable CD players was a cinch and only took about 1.5 seconds to get out of those packages.

dude, fiskars make pretty nice quality scissors. they can handle most any material and are damn sharp, slicing through paper with finesse and ease.
I mean I know this packaging is manufactured by space devils and all... but I'm pretty surprised that not even the might of fiskars could withstand the onslaught.
edit: I guess I took too quick a glance at the scissors in question. comparing them to the fiskars here on my desk, they are most certainly not. validation for my faith in fiskars! I should never have questioned.
[–]vanostran 69 points70 points71 points 1 year ago
I see no brand name. These are likely a cheap Chinese knockoff.
[–]feelsgoodman 184 points185 points186 points 1 year ago
Those are not Fiskars. They are just orange. I am looking at 100% genuine Fiskars right now and laughing at the pitiful junk in OP's picture. The only thing these bad boys couldn't slice through is the embarrassment of using any other brand.
[–]7oby 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago
Rock on, dude. I've had brand loyalty to Fiskars since using the pair my father bought for home use when I was a kid. I know they're reliable.
[–]dinod8 108 points109 points110 points 1 year ago
TIL people care about what brand of scissors they use.
[–]Dustmuffins 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
If you've ever compared the two, it makes a big difference. A pair of Fiskars will last for decades without a problem. You can see how the OP's blades of the scissors were just kind of halfheartedly attached, and would push through the plastic after encountering something hard.
Fiskars, on the other hand, has the plastic ergonomic handle molded around the blades, so they won't break off or not close all the way after years and years of use. The blades are made out of hardened stainless steel so they won't get dull or rust.
They're just a quality product.
[–]Spiffy313 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago*
TIL what the brand name of those orange-handled scissors is.
[–]youngmonk 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago

[–]_Los 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Having worked for Aiptek I can tell you that not only is this packaging not only a nuisance for the consumer, but for the people that have to process returns as well. All those sharp edges get sent right back to the distributor just as you all return them to the big box. It's a poor schmuck makin min wage who's gotta deal with it at the other end.
We would distribute to Target & Wal-mart. These big box stores request product be packaged this way, or will not sell your product (if you're a small distributor.) In several instances, we took new product out of cardboard boxes and sent them off to be repackaged in clamshells to meet this requirement.

Look up how to open clam shell packaging. I've seen some people use can openers.
[–]apullin 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago*
This type of packaging represents some pretty major things in out modern civilization:
1) "Blister Pack Item" now means something significant: It means something is cheap, mass produced, and delivered ready-for-retail. The proliferation of items like this represents the perils of exporting industry, but at the same time, the wonders of formerly exotic, premium items are now toy-store-shelf items.
2) The insanity of poorly designed tools. Those scissors wouldn't have broken if they had a full tang in the handle. This represents the hidden cost of saving money: the tool is cheaper, on the face value, but now you are losing time with a broken tool, and you still need to replace it. The unreasonably low cost of the item inflames our compulsions. That's one of the reasons that I like giving some a really good tool as a present, like a Swiss Army knife, or a good hand-forged hatchet or something: it's one of those things that should last the rest of their life, as opposed to some 99cent knife from the checkout aisle at Harbor Freight.
3) The ineptness of modern persons. How long is it until people start complaining that steel cans are ridiculous hard to open, and we see a picture with a hammer and a busted open can? You only know that that's not the way to do it because you were brought up opening cans with the right tool. Imagine if you dropped a case of some of the old steel-canned beer off in the modern times ... people would be fucking agahst that you'd have to use a sharp tool to actually punch it open, and then be slightly careful drinking it, instead of just smashing it in your face and guzzling it. Hell, we can't even have glass bottle anymore people they are so dangerous to people.
The ability to use tools is one of the distinguishing features of humans. Another is the ability to solve problems. We are rocket sledding away from that.
edit: fixed numbering. I can count to three!
[–]rockfire 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
Agreed.
Why can't they put in a little tab to pull or a convenient spot to cut on package?
[–]triad203 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
Because that would defeat the purpose of the packaging, which is to be difficult to open in order to deter retail theft.
[–]yortuk 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago
I think they also do it to psychologically deter people from returning stuff after they've opened it. But I actually get a big passive-aggressive thrill out of returning a horribly mangled, unsellable package with the explanation that I simply changed my mind and don't really need it.
[–]micahi21 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I have only done this twice but my minor variant on that is returning a horribly mangled pile of packaging along with a damaged product and then inform the staff that the item was damaged during extraction.
[–]rockfire 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
My point was that there are a number of simple ways that clamshell packaging can be made safer and easier to open, without compromising the anti-theft aspect of the packaging.
I'd agree with the anti-theft element of making plastic clamshell packaging difficult to open in a retail store environment if the packaging were too big to be folded and stuffed in a pocket or needed special tools to open or remove the anti-theft chip. But as someone else has pointed out, a small box-cutter defeats the packaging security in less than 30 seconds.
So I don't understand is why the packaging has to be so difficult to open that an average consumer is subjected to a safety hazard to open the package. Furthermore, stores selling product to consumers with a known hazard associated with it have a duty to show due diligence and mitigate that hazard.
I'd say that it is a lawsuit rich environment.

[–]Secret555 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
The same thing happened to me. I swear it was the same scissors too. Maybe we should buy better scissors instead.
[–]rushiku 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
In the picture, you can see that the scissor blade stops right after the pivot, putting the majority of the stress on the inch of weak, cheap-ass plastic between the blade and the finger loops: don't buy that kind ;)
[–]Condawg 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
But what if the new scissors come in that kind of package?
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Larry David agrees...
I don't know how to make it a hyperlink : ( Edit: Oh look! It did it automatically!
[–]warnerrr 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Looks like those scissors...couldn't cut it.
[–]OmeletteEngineer 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago

YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHH!
[–]PhilbertMcFilibuster 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
Fuck $3 plastic scissors. You want dressmaker shears.
pure class
[–]Dourpuss 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
It seems rather silly that we have plastic handles on scissors most of the time.
[–]dnj 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Most people would prefer to buy 10 crappy scissors for $3.99 over the span of 15 years instead of having a good pair of scissors and have to pay $40.00 all at once.
[–]pagaladmee 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
Quit buying dollar store skizors
[–]merreborn 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
The fact that the packaging literally advertised them as "Skizors™" should have been his first clue.
[–]MrMojoRisin1222 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Fuck you, you weak bastard. use your teeth.
[–]JSIN33 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
This kind of packaging exists because it saves marketers money and it also discourages returns.
[–]tamar 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
This thing will save your scissors: http://enjoyzibra.com/Home/PM/home.html
[–]OFrabjousDay 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
OK, which came first, the pic on reddit, or the customer pic on amazon?
[–]mcliquor 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I keep a combat-style Kershaw or CRKT folding knife on my desk to deal with these and FedEx packages. Inevitably, the bosses are concerned about weapons at the workplace...until they get one of these damned plastic packages. Then from across the hall, "You still got that big, sharp knife? Yeah, let me see it for a minute.". Problem solved.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
i have an angle grinder.
[–]justinthepit 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
It gets worse. Your new pair of scissors in that kind of packaging too.
[–]kdonaldson5 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Steak Knives work
[–]Joss 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Fuck those weak ass scissors too.
[–]scodav 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I think you're supposed to use the sharp metal parts rather than the orange plastic parts to cut with.
[–]AsGoodAsTheBest 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I got pissed just by reading the title. I knew exactly what I would find here. Packaging made of plastic fucking razors.
Fuck your crappy scissors.
[–]joseph177 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
It stop thieves from downloading devices into their pockets, but has that curious side effect. Use tactical shape charges, diamond tipped grinders or a rabid rottweiler.
[–]callmejeremy 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
You mean "Fuck dollar store scissors", right? Those have to be the cheapest of the cheap right there. The handled isnt even molded onto the blades!
[–]goonski 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
This tiny ceramic blade makes these types of packaging a joke and they are cheap and easy. Check it out. http://www.amazon.com/Slice-112366-Safety-Cutter-Green/dp/B002OOVC84 I'm sure they are cheaper elsewhere but I'm lazy.
[–]AngryData 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Just use a box cutter.
[–]mrcj22 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
This shit saves lives: http://www.amazon.com/OpenX-Blade-Universal-Package-Opener/dp/B0006ACWEQ
[–]YouHaveAProblem 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
You have a problem with your scissors, not the packaging. You need to go buy a decent pair of scissors or shears.
[–]TheMerchandise 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
funny story: with a moderately sharp pocket knife, you can cut into the first layer and just peel it up. hassle-free unpackaging.
[–]Kerrigore 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I wish more companies would do what logitech does and have an easy-open tab at the back.
I work somewhere that sells these. I make a point of mentioning it to everyone I sell one too, and most are very relieved. Also helps us out if they return it for some reason... I have seen some VERY destroyed packaging, but all we require for the return is that it be "complete".
[–]anon10500 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
fuck chinese made scissors
[–]tinwhistler 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
fuck dollar store scissors.
[–]jijacob 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Best way to cut these is to slice down every edge with a box cutter. You won't cut yourself if you do it right, and it makes quick work of these evil packages.
[–]KingJaphar 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
It's more like fuck those cheap ass scissors.
[–]lathesand 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I think you mean "Fuck this kind of scissors."
[–]SolusLoqui 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Gotta be smarter than what you're working with.
The only thing holding that package together is the braided looking seam around the edge. So if you user your scissors to cut around the edge of the package inside the seam, it will fall open like a book sitting on its spine.
/all of these posts forever.
[–]kymtastic 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Fuck the mega-stores that force their suppliers to use this kind of packaging. Fuck the people that steal shit that induce the mega-stores to go to those lengths.
[–]rattleandhum 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
What shitty scissors...
[–]ianmathews 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
That's what you get for buying scissors at the dollar store.
[–]Pikkster 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Fuck those kinds of scissors.
[–]gizadog 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Simple fix. Spend real money on scissors!
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Fuck that kind of scissors.
[–]useraccess 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
This damn packaging is used to help stores prevent theft since they can put sensors in the package that have to be deactivated before leaving the store. It also cuts down on the number of units that can be stolen at any one time. It seems extremely wasteful and is a total pain in the ass for the consumer. I'm always scared I'll cut through a user manual or other information in the package. But, when you cut around the edges, it can be impossible to remove the item unless you cut the entire package outline. POS!
