A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

If we're speaking in terms of functionality, Chambord was neither a palace nor a castle. King Francois I used this chateau as a hunting lodge. He had hundreds of animals brought in from the wild and kept them within a 30 square mile enclosure. And then I assume he would charge out of the gates on his stallion and slaughter countless helpless animals in the name of France!

Surely that's a palace and not a castle? It has no defence capabilites, similar to Vienna's Winter Palace.

For me it has to be this

In France, a château can be either a defensive castle, for example Montségur or a later-period palace like Versailles or Chenonceau, which have no defense capabilities.

The funny thing is, he built it on top of the hill, at the bottom of which is the perfectly good (and also beautiful) castle he grew up in. You can literally walk from one to the other in about 15 minutes, but the nut-case king wanted one prettier.

came here to say this.

I studied and visited caracassonne while in school in France. It is generally considered to be the most advanced castle ever built (before the invention of gun powder) and it has loads of wonderful technologies designed to repel the invading spanianrds and ottoman (like the fact that all staircases are in the dark and have un-equal random heights so that you can't run up them).

It has never been successfully taken.

So, when you go there, what do you do? Is there a tour? Can you talk some more about that experience?

[–]sgolsen 43 points44 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are actually a number of things to do there. Below Neuschwanstein and adjacent to the parking lot at the base of the mountain is Schloss Hohenschwangau, the castle where Ludwig grew up. You can tour both Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein but the overwhelming majority of people only tour Neuschwanstein. Also next to the parking lot is Alpsee which you can walk around. Here's another pic of Alpsee taken from inside Neuschwanstein.

You can also hike, or take a bus, to Marienbrücke, or Mary's Bridge, which gives you this view of Neuschwanstein.

Finally, you can take a cable car/gondola type thing up the mountain in the background of this image and this image for another amazing view and you can hike down to the other side of Marienbrücke.

Nearby is the town of Füssen, the Wieskirche pilgrimage church ( exterior shot, interior shot ) and a little further away is the town of Oberammergau and also King Ludwig's hunting lodge Linderhof.

I've toured the area numerous times and I'd be glad to answer any questions you have.

Have you been to Herrenchiemsee per chance? The outside isn't anywhere near as spectacular, but my god the inside is amazing. Ludwig also ran out of money building that one, I don't think there was one specific castle that caused it.

The building of the castle has a cool story too, i encourage you to read it on wikipedia. (It was build by a half-crazy german king, who almost bankrupted the country by building this castle. And it was build in the late 19th century, when castles had only aesthetical value.)

Is there many commune type places like this in France?

When I was younger we stayed in France for a month down south in town near Nice and we drove a car from there to Verona in Italy and along the way we drove to this little old village way up the top of this mountain, really out of the way. It was a really step road and really narrow.

The village wasn't too big but was really old. Old wooden doors, cobbled roads and what not. It wasn't really touristy, we were probably the only English speaking people there be honest, but that could of been because it was winter. A lot of the pictures of inside there look really similar to way the place I went to was built and layed out. Except the place I went was on top of a kind of mountain and inland in a rural area. I was only 10 at the time so I can't remember much else about it.

It's always bugged me that I don't know what it was, because I want to be able to find out more about it. My parents or my brother can't remember either. Can anyone shed some light as to what we might of come across along that route?

[–]sawbutter 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I found that place you're talking about.

[–]ltmfp08 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you may have it. When I talk to my dad online tonight I'll see if I can pull up any old pictures. But I searched google images and say what it looks like inside, I'm pretty sure that's it. The way the road goes around the small mountain is exactly how I remember. Thank you so much, I'm going to make sure that's actually it though.

Technically, Mont-St-Michel is not really a castle. It started as a monastery/church thing at the top of the rock, and a town developed around it as well. That would actually be a really terrible place for a castle to begin with. a) it isn't actually protecting anything, any invaders/bad guys/whatever could just walk around it, and b) besieging that thing would only entail starving the garrison out, which would take all of 200 men, tops

You must have missed orientation, we were all given our campus maps and assigned a favorite castle. Speak with your student Body Representative asap to rectify this grievous oversight.

Castle Howard. I've never been there but after watching BridesHead revisited (the miniseries and then the movie) and then reading the book, I feel like I've lived in it.

Hey, OP! We have the same favorite castle! I like it so much that I made a paper model of it a few years ago. Pretty awesome... internet high five!

(for scale, the radius diameter of the base is about 14" and its approx a foot tall. yeah, those buildings are tiny.)

Maybe not my favorite, but here's a little-known castle, Predjamski literally built into the second-largest cave system in Slovania:

I'm quite fond of this one in Croatia. It's just so castley!

Also on the top there are little booths that have seats with holes in them as toilets and the poop falls down the castle wall. When I was a little kid I really had to shit so I shat in one.

The Louvre

People tend to forget that it was originally a castle. Actually, it's a bunch of different castle's built on top of the ruins of each of it's predecessors.

Castelo de Almourol - http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/5965624.jpg

this castle was built by the romans, it was later recovered by the templars and eventually abandoned arround the fourteenth century. It's built in the middle of a river. It has a pretty interesting history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almourol_Castle

Pfalzgrafenstein
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Pfalzgrafenstein

"The castle functioned as a toll-collecting station that was not to be ignored, as it worked in concert with Burg Gutenfels and the fortified town of Kaub on the right side of the river. A chain across the river forced ships to submit, and uncooperative traders could be kept in the dungeon until a ransom was delivered. The dungeon was a wooden float in the well."

O Brien's Castle on the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland

Not the most badass castle in and of itself, but you can't beat it for surrounding natural scenery. Just look! A little windy up there, though. Conan did a bit on it when he went to Ireland years back.

Castles imply a right to defend your home and property, yet all the castles in the world failed to preserve that basic right for Western Europeans and Americans (with a handful of exceptions)

I like somewhat ruined castles myself... St Andrews Castle has some great history, including mines dug from either side of the wall during a siege - when they met, there was an underground battle.

I also like Dumbarton Castle, mostly for its location and the way the castle is built into the natural landforms.

TLDR; fuck all you 'reddit hipsters'.

EDIT: To all the people who posted actual castles, thanks. There's some pretty cool places out there that I appreciate learning about.

Hearst Castle! Yes, this is William Randolph Hearst...a.k.a. Patty Hearst' Father. WRH gathered materials for years before building. Ceiling in Dining Hall has wood from a Castle in Europe (that was being torn down)...that pre-dates Columbus.
