I call foul on that. Body dysmorphic disorder has a wide range of symptoms, but extreme body modification: piercing, tattooing, branding, and even removal of flesh are not part of the diagnostic criteria. Source.

If you have a problem with this sort of behavior, go ahead and own it. Attributing behavior that you disapprove of to a mental illness is juvenile and ignorant.

I never said I disapprove. That's a judgment call I never addressed. I am however clever and lucid enough to recognize abnormal psychology at work. Body dysmorphic disorder is the closet label but it may be some subtype or maybe even its own closely related disorder that deserves its own classification. Regardless, it's a disorder nonetheless. Also, among the body modders I have meet or watched interviewed, they often show classic symptoms of BDD, so I reject your notion that they do not fit the diagnostic criteria. I do however concede that there's the abnormal level of attention sought in body modders, which others have commented on. That is perhaps a key component.

The component of extroversion makes a diagnosis of BDD incorrect. People with BDD believe that there is something hideous about their bodies and obsessively seek to correct it. In doing so, these people distance themselves from outside groups and hide their doings from as many people as possible.

People who modify their bodies, even to the extreme, are attention seekers. They want to be looked at. They want to interact with people from a position of being other. It is willful and proud, not secluded are self-hating.

If you're going to reject my sources and revert to experience and the watching of interviews, then here is my experience:

I have large cuttings, many tattoos, and used to have facial piercings. I never hated my body, thought something was wrong with it, or obsessed over my appearance. I was, however, an adrenaline junkie and liked seeing how far I could go. If you're looking for diagnostic criteria, Borderline Personality Disorder is a much better fit than BDD.

I apologize for the original implication that you were being overly judgmental. However, your claim that body modification of this sort is in any way related to BDD is incorrect.
