The Finns still use the swastika in their banners for the air force. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelian_Air_Command

It's odd though, the costume has both left and right facing swastikas.

And it isn't just which way it is facing, but that it is slightly rotated.

Nearly half of those swastikas are backwards ಠ_ಠ

Facing one way, it's female. Facing the other, it's male. The Nazi swastika is female. Hitler didn't know.

You should see my mom's blackface halloween costume from the late 50s.

I find it interesting that people are far more uptight about the swastika now, than when I was a kid. I was born 2 years after WWII ended.

I can see how a costume like that would have just produced laughs back in the fifties (although I have no idea when the picture was taken).

OTOH, if those had been sickle and hammers, people would have freaked out. Today, we have lots of "retro-commie" art.

I think it has to do with the freshness of "victory". When it's fresh, and you win, the enemy's symbols are a laughing stock. When they're the living enemy, they're offensive. Apparently, the freshness of the victory over Nazism has worn off, and people are back to associating it with the evil that it was, rather than the evil we stopped.

For my part, I wish the swastika could be "rehabilitated" so that people could see it for an ancient symbol of a lot of cultures, rather than just that of Nazism. And I love retro-commie art.

It will get there eventually. In Asia, where people had no direct experience with the Nazis, it's still a fairly popular symbol with varying meanings depending on whether you're in India, China, Japan or Central Asia.

I think the Nazi association will fade as fewer and fewer people are alive who actually remember the Nazis and it will gradually return to the status of an ancient symbol that dates back to classical antiquity.
