The 1st and 2nd pics are true. The giant robot suit is not.

yeah i think the last thing you would want to do with an angry dog after you cut off its body would be to give it a giant robot body to kick your ass with. i would not want to be the guy that flipped the "on" switch.

Nuke it from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.

So how long did the dog head live?

[–]Punkndrublic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm guessing not very long. If I recall their experiments were never at all successful.

[–]Lt_McDinosaur 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually they were very successful. For years, like the 40's scientist have been able to isolate every organ of human and non human bodies including the brain and keep it physically alive. the reason they keep the head together is because even today we can't yet connect nerves once they are cut, so by leaving the head intact the dog here could still use its eyes ears smell and taste. In the 50's American scientists sucessfully did a full body transfer of a chimp ie: they took the head from one and put it on the body of another. It worked and the body supported the head though the monkey had no control from the neck down. There was a video intervie in the /r/science a couple of months ago where they talked to the guy who did it or something to lazy right now to find it again.

[–]Wilwheatonfan87 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you can find videos of it on youtube, but the dog head was only able to react in basic form. Barely licking it's mouth.

[–]sashimi_taco 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is so sad. Why do we do such horrible things to an animal be specifically breed and designed to love us?

[–]JudasChurchfire 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the purpose of the experiments were to test the possibility of doing a head transplant; there were tests on monkeys as well.

Same reason there is an sub-industry devoted to torturing rabbits, dogs, cats, chimps and rats for unnecessary and obsolete product testing, I suppose.

Not long I believe.

A similar thing was done by this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Demikhov . He at least transplanted dog heads onto other dogs and they didn't live very long.

[–]sashimi_taco -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah i heard of that.

[–]wayndom -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If by "true," you mean that they cut off a dog's head, then kept it alive with tubes and whatnot, BULLSHIT. There's no technology today that can do that, there certainly wasn't when these photos were taken.

[–]Punkndrublic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's what they were trying to do. Like I said, if I recall correctly they had very little if any success.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they did it in the early 40s so you're really misinformed

[–]gormhornbori 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well they were true, and did keep the head alive for hours till it stopped responding to reflexes. (Blinking eyes, twitching and such. There are a lot of stories from theese experiments, for example the dog tried to bark, but couldn't because it had no lungs.)

You must realise that no matter how macabre these experiments did advance science and lead to the modern heart-lung machine, saving thousands every year.

1940's video of Russian's using a similar machine to bring a dogs head "back to life"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq06D0xRWmc (5 minutes in)

[–]ThumpinD 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They didn't "bring it back to life". They sliced the head off of a live dog, and kept it alive by pumping artificial blood replacement fluid through its arteries. It lives for several hours before dying.

[–]usernameunavailable[!] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They didn't do that either. It's a Soviet propaganda film, it is fake. The dog wouldn't be able to move its head like it does in the clip if its neck muscles were no longer attached to a body.

[–]kibitzor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember watching a video about a successful us brain surgeon. He confirmed that the Russians transplanted a dog head, and even created a two headed dog. It wasn't to create monsters, more as testing to see the best method to temporary hold a patient's head before a surrogate body is available. Obviously, no more testing in those areas is going on. source, very interesting video

[–]TlCKETS 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is a dog's head being kept alive with a machine. It is truly miserable. They poke at it to measure reflexes in order to measure the degree of cognitive abilities it has retained in this state. Not like Futurama at all.

The Soviets did an experiment where they attached the head of one dog onto another -- resulting in a two-headed dog. It was covered in Life Magazine, and I rekon I'm gonna have to find a link...
