It's not that difficult when your left foot is on a ridge for balance.

He's also holding on to the rope with his right hand.

FIXED

I removed the annoying blue artifact blocking most of the photo. Now our giant is a bit more visible.

Obligatory: Philippe Petit.

Crazy French dude did something similar in the 70's, except he did it between the World Trade Center buildings. He and his crew snuck all the equipment up, shot an arrow from one building's roof to the other with the line on it. He spent 45 minutes dancing on a wire between the two buildings. They had to pull him off with a helicopter cause he wouldn't come down. And then he walked off.

There's a great movie on the story called "Man On Wire". Highly recommended.

[–]bathysphere22 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

he actually walked off, he wasn't pulled off with a helicopter

Ah! Thanks. My mistake. My memory seems to have made it more awesome than it really was. ;)

[–]FORVICTORY 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, pulling him off with a helicopter would almost definitely make him plumet to his death. Helicopters = wind.

But, this is defnitely my favorite documentary. Very inspiring.

I'm so scared of heights and falling, that I am actually afraid to watch that movie.

[–]johnylaw 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't be afraid of falling, be afraid of rapid deceleration.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I'm equally scared, and watched it. It haunts my nightmares.

Except this is Dean Potter, and that line is a nylon piece of 1inch webbing called a slack line. It is not tight like a standard "Tight rope"

Dean does this a lot in Yosemite.

This. Common warm-up for rock climbers, but it's usually a couple feet off the ground.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't seem like this would be a good warm-up. Good for balance, yes, but I usually warm up on easy boulder problems.

[–]HydeOut 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bouldering. <3

Slack lining is great for trips when it rains. =\ Just put up a slack line between two trees. =)

[–]LostAbbott 1 point2 points ago

So yeah actually quite a bit harder than a traditional tight rope. since you have to both control the wobble of the line as well as your own wobble...

[–]PokeSmotDoc 3 points4 points ago

Watched the move. Not bad. Still, not the safest place to practice karate.

[–]Adrianoo 3 points4 points ago

A bit curious....wouldn't a helicopter roaming around him make him lose balance?

[–]kmillns 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's why he stopped walking on the wire and turned himself in.

[–]rmonty0908 5 points6 points ago

Saw the movie. He kinda struck me as an asshole.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

NO MyPotPie, you retard! The guy is an asshole!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you recall the documentary, there were no interviews with Petit with any of his former colleagues. After the Twin Towers, he immediately slept with a groupie despite his long-time girlfriend and immediately became a media star, abandoning his friends. This is why the one (former) friend bursts into tears at the end. He was an asshole. The human aspect is what elevated this documentary from good to great.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]iseeu52jr 1 point2 points ago

It's on Netflix streaming, for those who are curious. It's pretty insane to watch him go across.

[–]junkytrunks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I watched the movie with my young kids.

I am still astonished at the sex scene that they threw in near the end. Talk about surprise smut in a documentary. It was rather unnecessary and ruins the movie for the school-age set.

[–]jesteryte 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was a great movie. There's a part when Philippe Petit is talking about how facing the most serious consequences possible causes the rest of the world to fall away to the focus and clarity of his walk on the wire. Dean Potter in 'the Sharp End' and 'Fly or Die' also talks at length about the heightened state of awareness he gets when he is about to solo a climb - his whole body tingling, as he describes it. I think both individuals experience their disciplines as life-affirming in that they are acts in denial of death. Watching them, we can see is beautiful about danger. Of course, that doesn't mean they're not both seriously unhinged. . .

[–]PimpMogul 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That movie was top notch in terms of self-told documentaries. I enjoyed his enthusiasm years AFTER he had done the act.

Everytime I think about Yosemite, or see it in print, I'm reminded of an Australian I met once while hiking out there. He pronounced Yosemite like it rhymed with "Vegemite". Nobody I was with corrected him because we thought it was awesome/hilarious. I wonder to this day if he ever got corrected. Or, if when he did, he stuck to his pronunciation anyway.

[–]jellyfishes 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have no daredevil spirit. Putting myself in danger does not excite me. The way I see it, no matter how advanced my skill level, there will always be factors out of my control, and I don't think that risk is worth the reward.

That shit is fucking impressive, though.

[–]bobtentpeg 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yet he isn't tied off. Just sayin', being tied off to the line wouldn't make it any less impressive but it would make me think more highly of the guy.

[–]LostAbbott 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He has tied off to the line a lot with another piece of webbing and a rappel ring. He also does this with a chute and jumps off in the middle.

[–]bobtentpeg 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe I'm blind, but where is the ring or webbing? In the picture I see neither.

Also, they apparently make strapless parachutes, perfect for the evening out with your man. The ACME strapless parachuteTM is slimming and fits nearly any body type.

[–]LostAbbott 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry I guess I accidentally... In this shot he has no protection. On other high line walks he has used those other forms of protection.

[–]sirkazuo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It would be less impressive to me... ballsiness and confidence are both metrics of impress.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Crazy as shit, but you have to realize that the chances of him catching that wire with a leg or arm if he falls is pretty close to 100%. He is a very skilled climber.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He also free solos quite frequently. He knows what he's getting himself into.

[–]ChippedMetalCig 1 point2 points ago
