Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Unsolicited Advice Time. Have you considered placing the watermark in a more central part of the image? I'm imagining making it 50% opaque, and curving around the dogs head (or something).

Mother of god, that's an obtrusive watermark idea. I do not support this plan.

EDIT: Who is downvoting you? I might disagree with your watermark plan, but seriously reddit, don't turn this site into a popularity contest. His idea, while unpopular, is at least well formed and has some thought in it.

I watermark because it was my last resort. I resisted doing it for a long time, but too much of my material was yoinked and claimed as someone else's. 12pt font in the bottom corner is as far as I will go.

I photoshopped the wedding picture. Cropped, tilted, added motion blur. Then I created a dog paw from scratch and blurred it. I also added the caption. I created the humor that everyone is enjoying. I'm just saying that it would be nice if I got a little credit for it.

I hate the fact that I have to watermark at all. I try to make it as small and unobtrusive as possible while still being able to read it. The joke is the thing. I would rather lose my credit than distract from the humor.

Yeah, I completely understand. Only on rare occasions do I watermark my own stuff.

That being said, if I'd gotten an image to the front page of Reddit more then once, I might think about putting something in somewhere.

It's cool. That's usually the case. Though why people spend the time to crop off a tiny watermark is beyond me. A front page reddit = 50,000+ hits to a site. I make my living as a comedian and my blog is part of that. It's just a little hard to swallow when you miss out on that kind of exposure.

Don't need to crop it off if you have Photoshop. All I would have to do is a little 'magic' and the watermark is gone. I have removed large watermarks from images too so the moral of the story is, nothing is safe online.

Maybe it's just because Im lazy, but why wouldn't they just submit the link to your site?

That takes far fewer steps than: Save, Image Editor-> Crop, Re-Save, Upload to Imgur, submit link to Reddit.

Sure, and the people who do that don't get upvoted because it looks like blogspam, that is why you see so many people who directly link to pictures on the frontpage. It's like when people say "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO POST THIS IN SUBREDDIT XXX", but since that subreddit only has 1000 users, people who follow the rule never get their posts frontpaged. Sames goes with the "DON'T PUT THE FUCKING PUNCHLINE IN THE FUCKING TITLE" thing from /r/funny: the reason why so many posts with the punchline in the title get upvoted is because more often than not, the punchline is catchy, so people notice the post and upvote it. So yes, there are theoretical rules, but in practice, there are reasons why people break them and why posts that don't follow them get upvoted. Which subsequently leads to comments like yours, with people getting outraged that the rules aren't followed.

Such is the endless loop of reddit that we've all witnessed on this website since the dawn of time.

My point is, I share images with people who don't care about watermarks or copyrights. All they want to do is see them. Watermarks and copyrights sometimes aren't worth going to court over. I respect the fact that the OP 'marked' his image as his own but it isn't going to stop others from claiming it as their own if they really wanted to. How many people spend their time scouring the Internet trying to find the scoundrel who 'stole' an image or article? Even if they do, how many people actually take said scoundrel to court? It's like I said, once a person puts something online, it's up for grabs. I personally have never 'stolen' anyone's images and claimed them as my own.

I'll tell you cares about the watermark...the person who put the watermark on the image. A watermark means the person owns the image and image is copyright protected. If you pay for the image or the use of the image, you can get the image without the watermark. Otherwise, you are stealing the image that belongs to someone else.
