Well, as the space scenes in Star Wars were based on dog fights in WWII and Chewbacca was on the Millenium Falcon during many of these space battles I think that there is a deeper meaning than we think.  The overall theme is the relation between Star Wars and World War II.  The storm trooper's blasters are based on the British Sterling sub-machine gun while the DL-44 heavy blaster pistol was based upon the German Mauser C96 pistol.  This is sort of ironic since the German-based DL-44 was used by Han Solo, who was on the good side, while the blaster based on the British sub-machine gun was used by Storm Troopers on the Imperial side.  The use of the Nazis with pistols highlights the irony of the swap of weapons.
 Chewbacca's bowcaster is based on the crossbow which is a reference to Operation Crossbow in World War II.  This operation is also represented by the giant squirrel.  Like the bombing during this operation, giant squirrels drop giant acorns which, like this bombing operation, would be detrimental to anyone who has a nut allergy, or is not immune to being bombed.
 Overall, it is a significant reference to World War II and how Chewbacca (The US and Great Britain) triumphed over the Nazis (The Galactic Empire).  Also, giant squirrels would be fun to ride.
