The mother of a friend of mine worked with the guy. Her reaction when she heard about it: "he's always been mad like that, I'm not surprised he did this"

[–]pk_ 15 points16 points ago

This explains very little. From "the google translate." It would seem he was upset that they were blocking the road, then he had to drive over them because they broke a mirror and he was scared.

ummm, ahhh WTF? Did he have a Charlie Sheen bi-polar stroke between these two events?

I've been behind these guys in NYC, at no point did I think driving down the middle of the road was an option -as annoyed as I was.

[–]travis- 9 points10 points ago

I understood his car was surrounded and they were banging on the car, someone broke the mirror. He was afraid for his sons safety. Definitely not warranting what he did tho.

[–]arkiel 6 points7 points ago

Or maybe the mirror broke while he was driving over them.

[–]metarugia 5 points6 points ago

I dont know, how would you feel if people are slamming your car and (in a confused state) it seems like they are attacking it(and you)? Would you stop and get out? Would you speed up? Would you roll down the window and ask them if they'd like to go out to tea?

[–]ConcordApes 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

More of his story. He had his son in the car and the cyclists were breaking his window and mirror. He gunned it because he feared for the safety of himself and his son. They had him trapped and there was only one way to go.

I smell a strong chance that this kind of behavior has been discussed about Critical Mass cyclists before. Critical Mass should congratulate themselves on successfully scaring a motorist.

If anyone should have his license revoked it's him. Also, banned from buses and trains. No better punishment that than having to bike for the rest of his life.

[–]PsyanideInk 2 points3 points ago

We only have one "in kind" punishment, and that is the death penalty. Somehow I don't think a punishment in kind revolution is something our society needs.

[–]da3dalus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was thinking along the lines of he has to commute via bicycle for 8 months.

Eye for an eye would be that he would have to bike down the road while someone behind him in a car accelerated through him, I was thinking ironic in the sense of he should have to walk a mile in their shoes not ironic in the sense that he should be subjected to the same physical violence he inflicted on others.

I truly detest "eye for an eye" as a concept of justice.

True, but:

[–]iodian 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this is not true all time. and the proportion of times it is true, could be low enough that it is not the best solution. would need stats tho.

[–]da3dalus 0 points1 point ago

Ok, I could apply the same logic to the above quote:

"punishment" != "rehabilitation".

Not true all of the time. Punishment does not equal rehabilitation, but you can't rehabilitate without a punishment.

Knowing critical mass, this is actually completely believable.

I have seen critical mass riders kicking and smashing windows on cars and insulting the drivers. I could easily see them taking it further.

It's a well known fact that when people are in large groups, aggression comes out really fast and things escalate quickly. Welcome to critical mass... they go out planning to get aggressive.

"I very much regret what happened to them (cyclists) all, but I had no other alternative. I was being attacked, they broke the mirror", he said.

Regardless of whatever damage might have been done to his car, mowing over a defenseless group of cyclist is NEVER, EVER an appropriate or justified response. What is wrong with some people??

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you thought you, and your son were in serious danger you wouldn't consider making a break for it at the expense of the group who you feel are putting you in danger?

[–]Fahr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. Especially not at the speed, recklessness, and intent to injure this guy imbued. He's in the protection of his car-- he could have easily forced his way through the cyclists without gunning the accelerator. No one on a bike would have impeded him if they thought their lives were at stake.

Rolling up the windows, locking the doors, and pushing through at an acceptable speed makes a hell of a lot more sense than what looks like attempted vehicular manslaughter. His response seems grotesquely disproportionate to whatever safety concerns he had.

I really hate critical masses. Yes, this obviously wasn't the appropriate response, but is it bad to say that I kinda understand where this guy was coming from? No-one died if I recall correctly. A few in serious condition. Critical mass is a douchebag move that I refuse to participate in. I'm not saying the driver was justifed by any stretch of the imagination, but I am surprised we don't see shit like this more often.

[–]junkit33 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, anybody who has ever gotten stuck in traffic due to Critical Mass has thought about doing the exact same thing. We all just realize the injuries that would occur if we did it, and thus we keep it to internal fantasy status.

I don't think I've ever seen another movement that has hurt its intended cause as much as Critical Mass has hurt biker's rights. I simply can't fathom what those jackasses think they are achieving.

[–]greenRiverThriller 93 points94 points ago

Road rage... Have you ever seen critical mass up close? It shuts down entire cities for up to an hour. People very often miss flights/ferries. On top of that, some of the more cowardly bikers hit and scratch cars as they do it. They antagonize drivers, and the corkers are always the most aggressive riders in the pack. I've seen them get off thier bikes with locks and chains in hand ready to smash any car that challenges thier ownership of an intersection.

It brings out the highest level of rage from both sides, so I say it again; I am surprised we don't see shit like this more often.

[–]metarugia 1 point2 points ago

Dam, am I happy I never encountered them in the city. Now, What are the rules for yielding to a tank?

[–]chrisbucks -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You said you're surprised that you don't see this more often and I think my reasoning was sound as to why we don't. I completely understand that people get angry for whatever reason, but the majority of people do not resort to murder (unsuccessful in this case) in these situations. Hence why I believe the person if not pre-meditated was suffering from some kind of psychological trauma which caused him to act this way. I don't get why people are seek to normalise his behavior.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]chrisbucks 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly this guy was freaked out and hit the accelerator plowing through a crowd of people, but I think this is very much the exception than the norm. The vast majority of people would not react this way to a crowd of people unless they had some prior psychological trauma.

[–]greenRiverThriller 1 point2 points ago

I was in Philadelphia for a couple of Critical Mass rides, and it was great. Mostly because there weren't any of the douchebag moves you mention. A nice pace, but not to fast to lose the slow riders. Only stayed on a street for a couple of blocks and then turned so cars didn't back up behind us. Waved to the people on the street, they cheered us on. A fun ride around town with a bunch of other bikes, and traffic wasn't clogged up. Then on a different day some fool got in the front and took the crowd on the walkways of a University campus. I left that one right away, what lame move for whoever took it that way. But anyway, if it is done right, it isn't bad, it is just a nice ride around town. But anyway, it is civil disobedience, but I am not in it if people just want to prove how slow bikes can go. I would rather ride around town and show people how fun it is to ride.

[–]greenRiverThriller 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If it wasn't set up to be such a dick move to other cars, I would be the first one in line. I've set up countless day rides of varying sizes and successes, but I've never set out to ruin anyone else's day over it.

[–]junkit33 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only stayed on a street for a couple of blocks and then turned so cars didn't back up behind us.

The problem is that's precisely the opposite of how the other 99% of the rides play out.

[–]happy555cat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it is no stress too. Enough bikes around you that you feel safe, like no car is going to bump your handlebars. When it is good, it is so different than riding normally. Like today I had a minivan squeeze me out of a lane by coming around me at an intersection and then the street was too narrow for both of us. I'm used to it, but damn, it really isn't safe. Then when I got my momentum up, I just had to pass him when the street got wide enough. The opposite though, is a nice big group ride. It is like Christmas morning.

[–]werkshop1313 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, they ride bikes, blocking all traffic. I've only seen it in cities with a large bike population.

They like to do it during evening rush hour.

I don't believe it is effective at anything other than polarizing non-bikers even more...and as a hippy social hour where they can show off their weirdest bikes or old jester hats.

To be fair, this Bikers sympathy is kind of nonsense. First of all, Bikers beg Drivers to be careful and follow all traffic rules, but I have yet to see many bikers who reciprocate. And Critical Mass invites this, It's basically an invitation that says fuck you to everyone who drives or has somewhere to be. I'm sorry we're not all hippies.

Not to justify what this driver did, it's absolutely horrible... but this kind of thing is bound to happen.

Critical mass is widely known as a bunch of pretentious jackasses. My experiences with them in NYC fell right in line with that.

Their entire purpose is to cause problems for drivers, mainly by causing traffic and preventing drivers from being able to drive where they need to. They are known to kick cars, yell and insult drivers, and break windows as they ride down the street.

It's basically like trying to get someone to accept gay people by rubbing your penis in their face. I.e. the vast majority of people are going to be pissed off, not go "oh, wow, these bike riders are pretty cool people... maybe I should give bikers some more room and treat them a little better."

Instead, people go "Wow, what a bunch of fucking assholes."

So... again, while it's not justified... I would have expected this type of thing to happen at some point.

I've never wanted to upvote a comment on reddit so much. This is exactly why critical mass is stupid. Bikers who participate certainly don't deserve to get run the **** over but at the same time, they don't have any right to take the entire road. Roads are for cars, first and foremost. I'm all for sharing the road but bikes have to remember that they are 2nd at best in the road-going hierarchy.

I have been on multiple large rides in my home town, keep in mind these rides are not related to critical mass. we have a tradition of having pretty girls hand out candy and flowers to cars that we hold up when the group crosses a road, We also wave and thank drivers for waiting. this seems to help, and really emphasizes that the ride is for fun and not specifically to hold up drivers on the road. Critical mass seems to just piss people off, holding up traffic does not make people like you.
though on a related note, speaking as a biker who has been hit by a car twice while riding in bike lanes, i hope this driver gets life in prison. that is attempted multiple homicide and needs to be punished.

Reddit Enhancement Suite. Sometimes I wonder what effect it has on the servers though. I have not tried it.

As others have said, its a script called "Reddit Enhancement Suite."
What others have not said is that you require the Greasemonkey addon.
Furthermore, if you don't want all the other stuff, you can use the "Reddit Uppers and Downers Enhanced" script for just this feature.

if a bunch of slow ass bike riding assholes started beating on my car i would run them over as well......things like that are a 2 way street, if your on a bike and you fuck with a car your literally bring a knife to a gunfight......i wish bikers would quit thinking there invincible, i wish bikers would follow the same laws car do...... im tired of getting stuck behind asshole bikers.......they show NO courtesy towards the other vehicles on the road....they just dive infront of huge trucks expecting them to brake.......what this guy did....was fucking awesome and more people need to do that......how else are bikers gonna learn to stay the fuck out of my way? when will they learn respect fo other vehicles?.......will any biker ever admit to the wrong doings they do on the road daily? if im being harassed by bikers in my car at what point do i get to fight back? i would seriously buy this man a beer if i could......BIKERS NEED TO LEARN TO SHARE THE ROAD!

[–]cryptorchidism 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

im tired of getting stuck behind asshole bikers.......they show NO courtesy towards the other vehicles on the road....they just dive infront of huge trucks expecting them to brake

I assume your rage applies 20-fold to drivers, because I see that way more often. Oh, and the drivers are taking other people's lives into their hands, not just their own.

Think back. How often is the thing in front of you blocking your path another auto? Compare that to how often it's a bike.

[–]DillonV 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

bikers are always running red lights and stop signs......dipping in and out of the sidewalk when convenient....... that tells me they dont give a shit....and if they dont give a shit i dont know why i should have too either......if some idiot on a bike cuts me off, and i have to literally slam on my brakes to avoid hitting them.....that means the biker is doing it wrong

[–]cryptorchidism 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So what, cars never run stop signs or red lights? Drivers never violate the speed limit or change lanes without signalling or tailgate or cut you off or pass on the wrong side?

Oh, that's right. When a driver does it, the driver's an asshole. When a cyclist does it, all cyclists are assholes (and automatically deserve assault with a deadly weapon).

[–]DillonV 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i see bikes do it more so then i see cars do......literally about 90% of the bikers i see run red lights and stop signs and merge without looking...witch seems like it can be very dangerous..... be 100% honest people.....how often do you see bicyclists stopped at stop signs and red lights? , how often do you see cars stop at stop signs and red lights ? i could honestly say that 98% of the cars i see follow road laws and have some level of courtesy.....only about 10 % of the time do i see bikers follow the same rules

if the biker doesnt give a shit i dont either.....i may be slow to slam my brakes next time a small fragile object (like a bike and biker) cut me off on a road where the speed limit is 45..... (im not saying that in a threatening manner) im saying i could be distracted...in someway or another, you probably shouldn't just asume you can do what ever and the cars are going to yield to you

[–]cryptorchidism 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, you can cherry-pick moving violations (though about 2/3rds of cars don't obey stop signs ime, and you ignore that waiting at a stoplight is incredibly dangerous on two wheels [I know this from my motorcycle] ), but your fundamental bias remains: when it's a driver that guy is a douche, but take away two wheels and cyclists are douches.

I may be slow to slam my brakes next time a small fragile object (like a bike and biker) cut me off on a road where the speed limit is 45. I'm saying I could be distracted.

True. Distracted (or simply unaware) drivers are predominantly motorists, and cyclists tend to suffer for their inattention. =(

[–]DillonV 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my point that im trying to make.....is that if bikers followed the road rules better, they wouldnt be nearly as STRESSFUL to be around.....you do relies how stressful it gets paying extra hard attention because the biker doesnt give a flying fuck about the person behind him......"oh your in a car getting ready to pass me at 20 MPH over my speed....let me just get in front of you for no reason" no signal no nothing......WHY? You bikers who jump in to defend this behavior say its a select few of you that do shit like that.......i see it ALMOST every time i see a biker......i have a gopro you want me to start getting vidoe proof? (wich seems ridiculous) how can you guys actively deny that MOST the bikes you see on the road are rude, and reckless (your like fox news trying to defend palin) it is 100% ridiculous to claim that most bikers treat cars with respect......

[–]cryptorchidism 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My point that I'm trying to make is that if bikers followed the road rules better, they wouldn't be nearly as STRESSFUL to be around.

Irrelevant. Operating a vehicle is not a performance art. Safety and economy are the only valid measures of success.

If your argument was that following the rules is safer, then I would agree 100%.

[–]DillonV 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so waiting at a stoplight is dangerous?......so lets just go ahead and run it.....thats your solution.....clever....thats alot better then waiting at the stoplight right?

i have a small car (mk2 golf) does that mean that stoplights are dangerous for me too? should i just run all stop lights? (im not understanding your argument with that......it doesnt make sense to me....stoping at a traffic light is bad so its better to blindly push through it?)

that way as your running it your not just putting yourself in a more dangerous spot but your also throwing un willing drivers in a shitty situation.....you guys got road rights already, now why dont you practice some roadside manner, and show some respect for the people who are ON THE ROAD WITH YOU

[–]cryptorchidism 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So waiting at a stoplight is dangerous?

Yep. Take any motorcycle safety course and you'll have that drilled into you. You always need to be aware of what's behind you when stopped.

So lets just go ahead and run it. That's your solution. Clever! That's a lot better than waiting at the stoplight, right?

Not my solution, but that's what's going through the cyclist's mind. Have you ever talked to one? (note: yelling profanities out the window doesn't count) If they check for the presence of traffic in the intersection, I think it's no more dangerous than the habitual stop-sign running that motorists engage in.

Does that mean that stoplights are dangerous for me too?

Yes, but to a lesser extent. You have a metal cage surrounding you that's designed to sacrifice itself in a collision to save your life. Bikers of both varieties have no such luxury.

Should I just run all stop lights?

I'd prefer you didn't. You're way more likely to kill someone else than a cyclist (incidentally you're also way more likely to get ticketed, I suspect for the same reason). You have worst situational awareness than a cyclist (again, the metal cage thing). You also have less maneuverability and take up more space, making a collision that much more likely.

Better to blindly push through it?

No. Blindly running a light is stupid and dangerous, and anyone who does that puts their life in serious jeopardy. Any driver who does that also puts other lives in jeopardy.

Also, long runs of periods aren't actually a way to denote sentence breaks in English. I recommend this book.

[–]pauldy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You just need a bigger vehicle. I used to drive a 4 door neon I had since college. Near my house is a bike trail and lots of riders like to go off trail and ride the streets. I upgraded to an urban assault vehicle now when I roll up behind a group of cyclists invariably about 3/4 of them pull over to the side of the road and will literally stop and let me pass. Those remaining usually get over pretty quickly after wards and I don't even have to bump them or honk my horn.

Compact cars don't slow down traffic.

[–]PhilangeesMcPoopins 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe the stupidest comment on reddit. Cars don't slow traffic? Are you kidding?

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A large number of cars is, perhaps, the very definition of traffic. However, compact cars, on an individual level, do not slow down traffic.

A bunch of compact cars, or indeed any cars, do not simply drive slowly. There is some source of traffic jams. It could be something as simple as the roads not being designed for the number of cars that pass through them.

If a bunch of car drivers decided one day to drive very slowly, causing traffic, when they have no reason to do so, then I would have very little problem with them being mowed down by tanks (which, can apparently travel faster than cars regularly do?).

The situation here isn't just some driver running over bikes for happening to cause traffic. I am not defending what he did, but what he did was run over bicyclists intentionally causing traffic. If they followed traffic laws (assuming they exist in brazil), or just had some common courtesy and rode no more than two wide, this situation wouldn't have existed.

[–]PhilangeesMcPoopins 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In cities, traffic jams do not happen because people are driving too slowly. It does happen on highways, but not in cities. Traffic jams in cities happen because there are too many cars on the road. Bicycles do not slow traffic, in fact they help get rid of congestion, which is again, the cause of traffic.

[–]CoolMoD 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But bicyclists, in this scenario, are causing traffic. What's more, they are intentionally causing traffic. This does nothing to promote their cause. And look at these cyclists, before they were hit. They are standing still, blocking this car. If a car driver simply stopped in front of me to slow traffic (perhaps to demonstrate a point? I don't care. No good comes of slowing traffic), I cannot tell you how tempting it would be to plow him out of my way, if I did not have to worry about the damage done to my car.

if bicyclists want equal road rights they need to start paying an equivalent to the gasoline tax.

[–]cryptorchidism 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Like property taxes? Or federal income taxes? (cyclists actually contribute to roads disproportionate to the amount of road maintenance, congestion, and pollution they cause)

I'm pretty sure it's the law's job to tell you if cyclists get "equal rights to the road," not your misguided sense of fairness to tell everyone else.
