[–]sleepingdragon 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Victoria Harbour being one of the busiest in the world, it's effectively impossible to build bridges over it. All cross-island traffic goes through the 3 tunnels.

[–]dontlookatmynameok 1 point2 points ago

Cross-harbour tunnels. The bright golden spot near the top-left is the entrance of the Western Harbour Crossing Tunnel on the Kowloon side.

Invisible most days of the year because of the insane smog. It's so crazy a friend of mine, after going to a clinic because of irritated eyes and breathing problems, had a doctor tell her that she was basically allergic to the air. The air in general. As in, there's nothing you can do, deal with it.

[–]bigups43 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Im from a small mountain town in NH. Population ~8k. Theres pretty much more people in any given building in that pic than in my hometown. The air is wonderful where Im from.

I told you that to tell you this: Hong Kong air is not that bad at all. Beijing is bad, Shanghai is bad, LA is bad. Hong Kong is not bad. Im an asthmatic smoker, and I have no breathing problems in HK.

[–]78fivealive 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's ugly, though -- the air. A yellow haze. Events that bring factory production in southern China to a halt bring crystal clear air to HK. The Olympics and the GFC, for example.

[–]vdot90 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup, every time i go there it takes me about a month just to be able to breathe through my nose. A lot is because of the factories from mainland China.

In my opinion Shanghai has far more impressive and beautiful buildings than Hong Kong. Unfortunately, they're spread pretty far across Pudong and Shanghai. The Bund is spectacular at night, especially with Pudong across the river.

I agree that Shanghai's is amazing, but until they finish the Shanghai Tower (tallest on the right, planned to be 2,073 ft. - 632 meters), Hong Kong is more impressive (because of the density). When the new tower is finished, I think Shanghai will easily overtake Hong Kong.

Went there this summer. It was hands down the coolest city I have ever been in. I think everyone I know is getting tired of me telling them to go visit if they can.

I think the most surprising/amazing thing to me was on one side of the island you have the city and the skyline like the pic above but you turn around and it is white beaches, the sea and green everywhere. The juxtaposition is like nothing I have ever seen.

I think the pic was taken from Victoria's Peak? I went up there and have my own pics from the viewpoint.

summer ... coolest city

What to re-think that word choice?

[–]warbo 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't downvote this guy...seriously, I used to live in a country that resides on the equator, and Hong Kong is WAY, WAY hotter and more humid. It's pretty insane how Hong Kong can change between winter (very, very nice ~50 degrees, very dry), and summer (insane humidity - nonstop sweating, when combined with the extreme heat and such dense population).

my personal advise: don't go to Hong Kong during summer, it sucks. go during the winter - you avoid the holiday crowd and enjoy a very nice consistent ~40-60 degrees.

ps: Typhoons during the summer. I go to Hong Kong 1-2 times every year and it seems there's a typhoon every time I visit during the summer. Nothing really big, just the stuff where trailers and cars are blown by the wind, and you see trees falling along the road following the aftermath.

[–]k3n0b1 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I second the no summer trip suggestion. Unless you are looking to lose weight. I lost 15-20 lbs in two weeks there during July. I was walking around drenched in sweat most of the time. But still a very interesting city.

[–]Wineagin 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was there in mid September but I had been traveling from Beijing all the way down to HK so maybe I had some time to acclimate. It was certainly hot but I guess I was already used to being sweaty and gross. Plus it didn't hurt that I was dressed like a tourist with my dry fit shorts and shirts. Also, I don't know if this is relevant but I am from Oregon, not exactly a similar climate.

everyone I know is getting tired of me telling them to go

LOL, I totally recognize this. I was there last year around Easter for only 3 days passing through to Europe and I can't wait to go back.

My first impression was it is an Asian version of Manhattan or downtown San Francisco, with a hint of Paris mixed in. There's is so much to do, truly a city that never sleeps, also very convenient for tourists.

At the night market I got a painting of the harbor, a bit Chinese restaurant style (bright colors but beautifully decorative), from the artist himself (he was selling huge stacks of his paintings in his own stall).

Compared to other cities I've been to it's definitely the one I felt most safe in as a tourist and if you like to be among people it's simply a fantastic place to be.

I now live in Hong Kong and it's great. I've also lived in New York before, and my opinion is that NY has more cultural activities (museums, galleries, etc.) but Hong Kong is a much more convenient city. But in many respects they are quite similar.

I go there whenever I can. It's an amazing place, energetic and exotic in changing ways around the clock. It's also a paragon of public management, managing to provide efficient transportation, sanitation, and other services for millions of people in such a tiny space while being almost completely devoid of street crime. You really have to see it to believe it.

[–]78fivealive 0 points1 point ago

a paragon of public management

I was very surprised about this. HK is much more user-friendly than, say, NYC (where I live). In six days I took almost every form of transportation known to man: plane, train, boat, automobile, tram, funicular, outdoor escalator, subway...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I was born there, it's pretty crowded, people are busy and don't give a shit, but there is just so much shit to do with an awesome nightlife. And go during winter for awesome weather and new years/christmas at lan guai fong. Also the best public transit in the world.

As a gweilo resident of Hong Kong, let me tell you the most beautiful views of Hong Kong aren't of the skyline, but instead on some of the fantastically beautiful hiking trails (Tai Mo Shan Country Park is a perfect example of this).

I LOVE this city.

Ugh, as someone who grew up in Asia, this makes me desperately miss large East Asian cities.

Walk around at 3 in the morning and there will be crowds of people walking eerrrywhere like they don't know what time it is. Combine that with the brilliantly lit neon signs covering every inch of visible airspace, crowded coffee shops and clubs, lively open-air markets, delicious food stalls, cars zooming around dodging pedestrians left and right... the bright city brimming with life, all against the backdrop of a dark night... it's just so goddamn invigorating. Nothing makes me feel more alive. I love it. (sorry just went on a love-ramble there)

Are there any US cities with that kind of "East Asian metropolis" vibe? I'd looooove to live that kind of environment, but within the US.

hey I just bought a cannon rebel t2i and am getting into photography. does anyone know how to create the effect in this photo with the lights? I would really appreciate any advice or a link to any tutorial. thx

[–]PavlovianPavlova 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The EXIF data in the version on wikimedia says aperture f/5.6 and a 6 second exposure. There's likely little more to the photography than choosing a clear night and using a tripod.

Then it's been put through Photoshop but it doesn't look too heavily manipulated, so probably some noise reduction and sharpening. Maybe some contrast adjustments but nothing too dramatic.

It's a great shot, but one that wouldn't be too hard to replicate given the right conditions and a tripod from that location.

Edit: sorry, just read that back and realised I didn't answer your question. I don't think there is an "effect" here - that's just what you would see if you chose a good night, took a crisp photo and did a little sharpening/contrast/colour balance in Photoshop.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sharpening/contrast/colour balance

Is this what you meant by noise reduction? Sorry I'm a newbie when it comes to photography...

[–]PavlovianPavlova 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, noise reduction is something separate. If you shoot with a high ISO setting then you're increasing the sensitivity of the sensor (analogous to using higher ISO rated film) to capture more info in less time/lower light. The trade-off is that there will be noise in the image, just like high ISO film shots have more grain.

Software like Photoshop or Noise Ninja can process these images to remove the noise and give you a smoother image.

Night shots, like this Hong Kong skyline, are particularly prone to noise as they're usually shot at medium to high ISO, and have dark areas where noise in the image is more noticeable.

Using a noise reduction function is thus a common part of post-processing.

If you're just starting out, try taking some shots at night with a high ISO setting like 800 or 1600 and you'll see what I mean. Then, in something like Photoshop find the noise reduction function and play with it. Tip: it's usually a good idea to apply the noise reduction function to the original image first, then apply your other adjustments like sharpening, contrast etc.

Many cameras have a built-in noise reduction function. Your mileage may vary with these. For instance, I find I get better results with Noise Ninja on my PC than I do with the built-in function on my Nikon D80.

Hope this helps!

I like this photo of Hong Kong much more. (I'm not sure if this is the original photographer's Flickr account or if this guy just stole it since I've seen it on other sites)

The service lift of this building is awesome. It travels from ground level to 90+ floors. On the way up, air pressure changes that you would quickly aware the discomfort in your ears.

Do you guys feel the energy in the air in big cities like this? The vastness and the magnitude of the place, the feeling that you are among millions in the urban agglomeration.. Just awesome.

Several years ago when I visited, airplanes would fly so low over the buildings that you think you can actually hit them by throwing a rock from street level. Also, the noise was deafening. Kai Tak airport was relocated shortly thereafter to allow the city to grow more vertically.

That's the IFC 2 (International finance center). IFC 1 is the same shape and style, just half the size (a little to the left of IFC 2). In the dark night batman jumps from 2 to 1.

That's my home, although i live about an hour away from all that hype and my school is at least 30 minutes away by train, I can see all those tall buildings from the 6th floor of my school, on a clear day, just like i could today :)

Sometimes, I like to let myself melt into the hectic lights, people and sounds that makes this city so great, it's chaos is eerily comforting.

If you want, more photos of HK from me as a HKer

The Americans just don't believe in the free market anymore. (Psst... it's because of what happened to their economy.)

[–]Tissues2 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hong Kong owes it's very existence to free trade. When the Chinese tried to keep out British opium imports we declared war on them and won the territories as a concession. Then we ran it as a colony for 156 years. We could be pretty brutal towards the inhabitants - racism was de rigueur during empire. Free market, maybe, but not free.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you could but you'd be a fucking idiot since HK is a very state-integrated economy (thanks to 100% government ownership and regulation of land) and enjoys a very parasitical relationship with the many Communist FTZs in GZ.

HK itself was of course a Crown Colony and entrepot between the Sterling Zone and China for about 100 years, and over the previous 60 years benefited greatly from the many societal pressures of the mainland that forced China's best and brightest to flee and either bring their capital to HK or bust their asses on the lower rungs of society.

This same dichotomy between rich and poor still exists in HK today. It is a special place but not every megapolis can function like it does (though since I am something of a Georgist I do think its land use policies are something to learn from).

It works for the small city state that is HK, with China - the world's workshop - on the doorstep. However, it's not a global level playing field and these ideas can't be suddenly imposed on developing nations.

Also, here in HK, we've the widest rich-poor gap in Asia, and this is directly due to the under-regulation and - until recently - the lack of minimum wage... For regular Hong Kongers, 'free' trade' means oligarchy, poverty and a lack of consumer choice.

[–]Stair_Car 4 points5 points ago
