You and I have some problems. A picture of a tomato in South Park, Colorado?

[–]KibblesnBitts 0 points1 point ago

Collectively:

A tomato, photographed by Zach Anner, just South Park, Colorado, U.S. of A.

You are aware that South Park, Colorado actually exists, right? I actually have relatives that live there. Although I believe the altitude prevents tornadoes from occurring.

Well, I'm not involved with /r/SpacePorn/, although I did message the mods and proposed a partnership (they haven't responded).

I did just launch /r/CityPorn/ today, which I hope will become just as successful as my earthier project.

[–]terminusest 2 points3 points ago

Yep, pretty much, though to be honest nearly everywhere I've lived has had crazy weather, just to different levels of extreme. The random 45 degree days in July in Oakland, the micro-climate effect in northern New Mexico, the Denver random patterns, and now I'm waiting to see what strangeness happens in my new city's weather.

Denver was just more extreme than most places, and the random blizzards in April (or May) tend to really stick in people's minds.

I'm pretty sure that tornado was round the corner from my house (Aug 24th last year)... here are a few more pics:

Damn that last one is terrifying.

I wouldn't want to be within miles of a twister, let alone that close.

Nice that the last pic is on a real estate domain.

[–]terminusest 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nice, it's pretty impressive how those storms love to hit Parker. I guess they're attracted to high property values (previous Parker resident). J/K. Nice photo though, I never got to see any of the tornadoes, I was always indoors working. Most I got was a brief glimpse of a funnel cloud forming a couple miles off through the trees.

I miss all the fun!

I love how the trees and grass look extra green whenever there is going to be a big storm. It's so eerie and beautiful.

[–]DeskFlyer 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's called post-processing.

[–]eric22vhs 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably. But prior to tornados it does look extremely eerie outside.

I haven't seen one by was living in VT when the sky was basically bright orange all day, and it made the grass and trees seem more vibrant. Next day we find out there were 4 tornados spotted throughout the state that day.

[–]Nerull 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is pretty much the opposite of the common myth - that it always appears green.

Both are simply confirmation bias at work.

[–]eric22vhs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe.. All I'm saying is the whether was really strange enough to discuss it, then we later hear there were multiple tornados that day.

I've heard the whole sky looks green-ish thing in school as a kid, and I'm sure there's some truth to it. I'm sure the weather is somehow related to weather or not there's a tornado out. My guess is that it's generally unusual enough that it creates these conceptions of green sky/whatever.

[–]Nerull 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But there are multiple tornadoes in almost every large storm system. You don't make note of those, and probably don't even remember they happened a few weeks later.

Storm research groups have done research on the question, and found that: 'green sky' happens all the time, and it shows no relation to the type of weather, other than 'storms', and storms tend to come with far more indicators than sky color.

[–]eric22vhs 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok.... but we're talking about whether or not the weather is strange when there's a tornado. Are you seriously arguing against that?

[–]rosscatherall 0 points1 point ago

I think only the eastern half with the plains sees many tornados. I don't think they're common in the mountains (but would like to know).

[–]wpskier 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True. I actually live in Parker, which is SE of Denver. Rarely do tornadoes occur further west than the eastern edge of the Denver metro area. I've lived here for 25 years, and never once been threatened by a tornado.

[–]Aurelius7 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've lived 10 minutes north of Parker (still SE Denver) for quite a few years and can also attest to the nontornadoeyness of the area.

[–]weischris 0 points1 point ago

I grew up in Littleton but now live in the mountains, I can confirm that we do not get tornadoes here, but we do get a shit ton of snow.

I believe part of Georgetown was destroyed by a tornado way back when, here's a link: http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/nov-20-1869-a-low-co2-tornado-destroyed-georgetown-colorado/

And in more recent times:

On 6/15/1988, a category 3 (max. wind speeds 158-206 mph) tornado 40.8 miles away from the Georgetown town center injured 7 people and caused between $5,000,000 and $50,000,000 in damages.

On 5/18/1975, a category 3 tornado 51.7 miles away from the town center .

Littleton does get plenty of Tornado watches in the summer though. Makes for eerie, yet beautiful storms. I miss seeing the clouds turning pitch black/green.

[–]Thimee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I live 10 minutes north of Parker, and have physically seen 4 of them in the last 3 years, so perhaps you didn't hear the sirens? None of them were particularly threatening - damage was limited to knocking over a few pool lawn chairs etc.

Although this one did a little more damage when it hit Southlands Mall two years ago: http://www.9news.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=117258&catid=339

Don't show her this: http://www.kxii.com/blogs/weatherblog/45450682.html

Although Tornado Alley does not include Colorado, Weld County, CO had the highest number of reported tornadoes - 213 - of any county in the United States (between 1950 and 2000), according to the National Weather Service. This works out to about four a year.

Haha, thanks! Always happy to make someone laugh!

I have seen tornadoes this way for most of my life and I'm surprised so few people think of them the same way. It must be related to the general fear I have of sentient geometric shapes that want to kill you.

Serious question: What would happen to me and my body if I just walked into that? I mean, specifically...

Like, would it twist me apart, or just suck me up into it? Would I die due to pressure, or suffocation, or explosion?

[–]justcametosay- 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The funnel is full of debris traveling hundreds of miles an hour. I imagine it would be akin to walking into a blender.

[–]sirberus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never thought of that.

But yeah, when I was a little kid, I remember during school sometimes (usually during the Santa Ana winds in so-cali) we'd get these little dirt-devil twisters. I was always the kid running towards them. Always wanted to make it to them before they died, but never did.

I know this isn't the same thing, but theres a part of me that sees tornados and just wants to run at them. Granted, a Darwin award is waiting for me some day... but yeah.

[–]dmanbiker 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I live in Arizona and when I was younger a small dirt-devil moved over me, when I was sitting on a wall in a park minding my own business.

I got covered in dirt, all of my hair, in my eyes and mouth and had little tiny scrapes from the little pebbles.

I have to say it was pretty awesome though.

[–]Starrfx642 0 points1 point ago*

This storm was known as the Memorial Day Miracle. One of the most photographic storms I've ever seen. (I wish I had gone out to see it for myself) I'll post other amazing pics of it later. There is also some amazing video of people getting within 100 yards of it. Truly spectacular.

EDIT: I hope someone sees this. Here are the photos: Number 1 Number 2 Here is an entire album..stunning And finally an awesome video upclose to the tornado

The reasons this storm is considered to be the Memorial Day Miracle is because

a) The risk for severe storms was marginal, at best. only a 5% tornado risk was evident.

b) When a tornado DID occur, it was a classic set up for Colorado Tornadoes. The dry air of colorado kills a lot of storms once they come off the mountains, but if the conditions are right, you get beautiful storm's like this one. The reason is because with dry air, only the most prominent structures are left, meaning no scud, low level clouds, or general crappy clouds to get in the way. If you look at some of the pictures, you can even see blue sky in the background.

c) The tornado was on the ground for a very long time. Not only this, but it was only moving at about 7 mph. Chasers lucky enough to see this storm literally were able to get out their lawn chairs and watch this thing.

I live in Ireland and have only ever seen a tornado once, and even then it was from altitude and very small. If you travelled to a place where they are common how easy is it to see one up close? how predictable are they? I would seriously love to see one up close if at all possible.
