At work I remote into a windows 7 box from a mac to remote into a server that runs a script that remotes into two more servers. It's like fucking Xzibit designed my workflow.

Back when I had a big network, I ended up with a mac laptop VNC'd to my linux desktop that was sshed into my bsd server so I could copy files from my win2k box to the server. I had absolutely no idea what any command would do at any given time.

I once VNC'd myself. Now that was awesome.

Weirdly, I've done this on my phone. It's the hack for running a standard Linux distro's GUI on Android.

[–]schunniky 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? Interesting, I'm curious to know more about this. I only ever use VNC when I'm at uni and want to tap into my home computer, but yeah, one time I was curious what happens if I were to VNC my own laptop on my laptop.

[–]NitsujTPU 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, it's not quite the same.

Since the phone runs the Android UI, you don't get a Linux desktop. So, you set up a distro in its own directory, then chroot that directory and launch your desktop from there.

Since there's no xserver for Android phones, this poses a problem. There is however, a VNC implementation. So, you launch a VNC server under your chroot partition, and a VNC client under Android so you can see your desktop.

If there was an xserver for Android, you could bypass that step. Since Google announced a C++ API for Android, though, it's more likely that people will port the Linux GUI libraries to Android, so that GTK+ apps and such can simply be compiled for the Android UI.

That's actually the hardest part, I go back and forth between the mac and windows 7 a lot and I use a mac keyboard, it can be a headfuck remembering commands.

[–]IConrad 24 points25 points ago

Try my old job on for size. I run Linux on my desktop. The network requires Windows for VPN access... in order to administrate Linux boxes.

That's right; to access Linux servers from my Linux desktop I must run a Windows VM.

As though that insult weren't sufficient -- what is one of the things I did with these remotely accessed Linux boxes? Why, programmatically initiate Windows-server sessions using Apple's Timbuktu Pro app to have those Windows boxes themselves open up Mac boxes using the same app. And the Mac Boxes then retrieved data from multiple servers (a roughly even distribution of AIX and RedHat servers for the databases in question).

So here's my OS journey on this contract:

Ubuntu Linux --> Windows 7 --> RedHat Linux --> Windows Server 2003 --> Mac OS X --> RedHat Linux / AIX

Go ahead and try to make that seem sane. I dare you.

I Agree with suprdave, however here is my reasoning for why this image is fail.

First, As everyone has already pointed out Windows NT 3.1 is NOT Windows 3.1.

Second, gv3.sys has been obsolete since Windows XP SP1, meaning the BSoD would only occur within the VMWare session on the Windows 7 host. What should of been used is Intelppm.sys, which is the replacement for gv3.sys in versions after Windows XP SP1. There are rare occasions that gv3.sys was force installed on Windows XP SP2, however it is NOT found on anything above Windows XP SP2.

It's been a long time since I've used either, and memory is unreliable, but I agree that inside OS looks like NT 3.51. The handful of apps have the gray 3D style rather than the flat background like 3.1, and the white text menus rather than the "3d gray" graphic version in v4+.

The gray bar at the botton suggests the NT 4+ taskbar, but there don't appear to be any apps on it, so it's probably drawn on rather than part of the original screenshot. Also, I'm vaguely recalling that some of the features, maybe the resizable docking taskbars, required you to install a particular version of IE and turn on "desktop integration" or something like that, but that may have only been for Win 95. Win 95 and NT 4 GUIs blend in my memory.

The most convincing 3.x clue for me though is the Sound Recorder. It has the microphone graphic on the record button instead of the red dot of later versions.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems that's just the wallpaper image.

[–]IWentToTheWoods 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For me, the biggest clue was where it says "Microsoft Windows NT" right in the middle.

Edit: I see now that Ubby had moved on to the question of "which version of Windows NT is this?" and I regret that my urge to post a cheap joke derailed what would have been an interesting discussion.

[–]Ubby 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

megagram & IWentToTheWoods: yes, the parts of the screenshot next to the window with the NT logo is what I was referring to. I thought it was obvious, but since you both completely missed my point, I guess it wasn't clear.

I wasn't debating whether it was NT or not, but rather which version of NT. By looking at parts of the other applications, I can reason that for at least as I remember it, I believe that is NT 3.5 or 3.51, rather than 3.1 or 4.0. Though firing up an old VM would be an easy way to know for sure, I thought it would be more fun to try to reason out which version it is.

I may be completely wrong about the version number based on the GUI points I looked at, but you two only got as far as the "Windows NT" logo, so at least I didn't come in last.

[–]IWentToTheWoods 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's fair; you referred to "3.1" and not "NT 3.1", so it wasn't obvious that you had moved past the question of "Is that Windows 3.1 or some version of Windows NT?" to "Which version of Windows NT is that?" I think that was a reasonable misunderstanding of your comment, but I apologize for going straight to the cheap joke based on that.

[–]Ubby 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right, it was a reasonable misunderstanding now that you point it out. I apologize for the smartass comment at the end there. I thought I killed that asshole years ago but he shows up every once in a while. I shoulda ran with your funny instead of being a dick.

The only real on-topic thing I have to share is on one of my projects, to get to the production DB I use Win7 to RDP to Win2Ka, then VNC to Win2Kb in order to use Sql EntMgr on yet another Win2K box running Sql2K. And twice in the past, that outer Win7 was running as a Parallels VM in OS X. I can only type one key every second or two that way, but surprisingly, pasting in a text script works just fine.

[–]IWentToTheWoods 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay, now the geek curiosity that should have been triggered by your initial comment (had I caught your meaning) is focused on why the first step of that process is necessary. That is, why can't Win7 VNC directly to Win2kb ?

[–]Ubby 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's several separate networks, each with only a single point of entry for what I need to get to. The guy that set it up that way, prior to me taking over the project, thought the obscurity would add to the security. i.e. the only hole from here to there is to RDP to the first box. The only hole to the next network is to VNC to the other, and so on. The remote services each only permit connections from the IP of the box immediately prior in the hierarchy.

And all but one of them have strong passwords that require lots of awkward typing.

Windows 3.1 wouldn't have been virtualising DOS, Windows 3.1 ran on top of DOS, so opening a DOS prompt would just give you access to it.

[–]skuggi 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, sorry, that's just not true. It may have been started through DOS, but DOS was not running underneath, since Windows 3.1 runs in protected mode and DOS runs i Real mode. That's why it has to be virtualized in order to give you a DOS prompt.

One of these days I'm going to be playing Minesweeper in Garry's mod (The mod for Half Life 2 while Half Life 1 is running on the GoldScr engine which is a mod of Quake) with the Minecraft wiremod-mod in Windows being simulated in Minecraft with redstone on Linux in a VM on Hackintosh on a PC in a dream within a lucid dream of being a brain in a vat in a universe being simulated by a bunch of rocks in the sand being moved around by a single human who given commands via a carrier pigeon which is given notes by myself, from the future who is being asked to change things via the (mentally insane) me who playing Minesweeper in Garry's mod with the Minecraft wiremod-mod in Windows being simulated in Minecraft with redstone on Linux in a VM on Hackintosh on a PC.

Really, unless the dream within the lucid dream became a lucid dream, than how else do you think I could get that to work? My mind would keep thinking "Hell, no. You can't do that! The computer will shit itself." and would probably start spitting shit out of the DVD drive.

Pft. Amateur. From my website:

"I’m running VMware Workstation 3.2 under RedHat 7.3 to run Windows 2000 so that I can run my company’s VPN client software (which has a Linux client that doesn’t do group passwords). After invoking the VPN connection, I used Terminal Services client to get a desktop on my secondary work computer which was running Windows 2000 Server with administrative mode terminal services. After connecting to that, I fired up PCAnywhere, which I used to connect to the “server” that was giving people a problem."

This was more humorous than I anticipated. I literally LOL'd.

However, shortly after reading this on my mac being remotely accessed from a windows 2k pc, I received the blue screen of death myself.

Have an irony upvote, sir.

The title is funny in two ways.

The "win" could represent the achievement of winning, while also being a shortened form of the Windows operating system. Yes!

So did I, but that the point is DOS "opened" Windows - not the other way around. Opening a command prompt is not "opening DOS".

I'll admit to never having owned Windows 1.0 though. I was too busy using a 32bit pre-emptive multitasking Amiga (released just before Windows 1.0 in 1985) where "DOS/CLI" and "GUI" applications were the same thing.
